How much do you walk per day?
I sit next to a street where a lot of people walk. Not for fun - but to actually get somewhere. There are a lot of apartments and bus stops around, so people are always walking by - with groceries, children, luggage - whatever. I don't walk much - but we do walk to restarants when we go out. People in the suburbs think I'm weird for doing that. Do they walk even less than me?

I purposely walk twice a day- to get out of my office, get some fresh air, de-stress and get exercise. If we're going downtown and can get away with taking public transit and walking a few blocks, that's definitely our preferred. Neither of us likes driving or parking downtown (and you still have to walk a couple of blocks, generally). And then we walk around the dog park with the dogs or take them on walks if the weather is too yucky for the park. So we do a fair amount of walking.

I could get by with walking probably less than 100 yards a day. (Go downstairs to the garage - drive to work - park in the parking garage - take elevator upstairs - walk to desk). But I usually end up walking around at lunch and after work or I'll feel like a slug. When we lived in NYC I walked probably 3-4 miles a day just getting from place to place. Great for the metabolism, bad for shoes

I am not a big walker. But we can walk to our town center from our house which is nice when we go out with friends and want to drink or taking a family walk on a Saturday afternoon for lunch or something.

I hardly ever walk anywhere. My city mostly developed during the 50s, 60s and early 70s when car was king. It is very poorly designed for pedestrian and bike traffic. I theoretically live within walking distance to my town's mall but I'd have to have a deathwish to attempt to get there on foot. I would love to be able to walk/bike to shops/restaurants/amenities.

I hardly walk anywhere. I live out in the middle of nowhere and there is nowhere to walk to.
I do walk up to the court house for work. it's about 3 blocks away. I also walk to 2 of the banks for closings. 1 is about 100 yards away, the other is a 1/2 block away.

I walk from the house to the truck, from the truck to the building entrance, and then vice versa. I throw in the occasional walk across the Wally World or grocery store parking lot. Other than that, if it weren't for the treadmill, I'd probably atrophy.

Depending on where I am when I'm driving, I'll see lots of people walking around on the streets. I'm not sure what they're doing, but it's very uncommon of me to walk anywhere. I'll usually just drive to a place, find the nearest parking spot and walk to it. I've somehwat interested in what those walking are doing it for. Sometimes I'll go walking on a trail or something, for leisure. But seldom to go somewhere by walking.

The concept of the Car has created the phenominon of Urban Spawl. It's difficult to walk anywhere in many cities. Where I live, there's really not much within reasonable walking distance as far as shopping or attractions go. Unless I want to walk several hours and carry my crap back.

I am at the point in my weightloss journey where I really do need to 'move more' - and I refuse to participate in organized 'exercise' - so that leaves me with moving more during my day. That said I know I'm walking a minimum of 6 miles a day. Weekdays: From home to train then from train station to the office is one mile (same for the return home) - so 2 miles right there. I take a 1.5 to 2 mile walk at lunch. In the evening at home I take another 2 mile (maybe more if I didn't get in a good walk at lunch). So that's 6 miles of purposeful walking - this doesn't include me trying to walk more around the office - I take the long way to the break room and bathroom. I take the stairs when I travel to other floors - the 14 flight climb when I visit the accounting department requires some pre-planning I used the website MapMyWalk to figure out my mileage and possible 'routes' to keep things interesting. On the weekends I do a 2 - 3 mile walk each day - and then do my best to NOT spend time sitting in front of the computer or TV - (I schedule my screen time). I'm currently wearing Weightwatchers Activelink activity monitor to help remind me to move more! It's like a FitBit. I've found it motivating as I'm moving more now than I was 12 weeks ago (I just completed a 'challenge'). FWIW: I've discovered lots of interesting places on my walks... I also now walk (or ride my bike - strapped an old milk crate to the back fender so I can carry stuff) to the grocery store and for most of the errands where I use to take the car. Walking (or biking for the longer errands) added between 20 and 30 minutes to my overall 'errand time'. Not bad - considering I'm avoiding the whole rigamorole with going to the 'gym' AND I've accomplished something I had to do anyway (run errands).

I currently walk 2.5 miles a day. My goal is a five K a day (3.1 miles). I do Weight Watchers too but we cannot get the active links until later this month. I am on the fence about it - afraid to see how inactive I actually am.

I walk nearly three miles a day just on an typical working day. I also average 25 flights of stairs. In addition, I try to add another mile or two and on good days I go to the high school and run the bleachers to up my stair count. My daily goal is 20,000 steps and 50 flights of stairs. I wear a fitbit so it's easy to keep track.
In the past 8 months I've dropped 25 pounds by watching what I eat and a lot of walking. I'm driving that SUV at the far end of the parking lot, as far away from the door as I can be. ;D

I don't do much walking to get places. We live in the middle of nowhere, so driving is required to get anywhere.
For exercise, I am in marathon training and running 30 miles/week.

I don't walk as much as I should but we do live 3/4 of a mile to our downtown center park and we walk to some Dr. Appts, shopping, going out to eat and such. In the summer we have been known to walk about 3 or 4 miles for fun. We also are lucky because our town holds all sorts of fun festivals, farmers market and summer concerts in the park and we walk to that stuff and don't have to fight for a parking spot ;D

I am on the fence about it - afraid to see how inactive I actually am. Probably not a 'slug' 0 activity if you are walking 2.5 miles a day - that's pretty much what I was doing before the monitor - the 2 miles to and from the train most days (I was driving to work for some reason I cannot explain - my brain apparently atrophied from lack of movement...) and the 'assesment' period with the ActiveLink said I was hitting a high of 2 points occassionally... My only advice is that if/when you get an ActiveLink to NOT consciously bump up your activity during the assessment period... just do what you normally do. That will make the info it captures more useful for setting goals and also in the future for when you look back and may be more motivating in the long run. A couple of the women in my meetings felt compelled to go the extra 'mile' during the assessment period and then when their goal setting was for even more activity they were over challenged (they couldn't keep up the daily workouts let alone add MORE activity)- some of them were discouraged and gave up - two others struggled with their 'results' and then just started over. A group of us (including the 'started over' ladies) compare notes and encourage each other. That's how I know what other people's experiences were.

I try to walk every day after work, there is a walking track on the way home from my office. Great for de-stressing from work to home.
I really wish I lived in a house that was within walking distance of my job, or that my city had a decent public transportation system so I could combine walking with subway/bus riding.
When we visited Paris in June for a business trip we stayed in a hotel in the suburbs and had a ten minute walk to the metro stop, then took the metro anywhere we wanted to go downtown, walking to a restaurant, then returning via metro to the hotel. Even though I was sitting in business meetings all day, even though I was eating good French food and guzzling nice French wine everyday, I lost five pounds that week just from walking (even taking the metro requires lots of walking - you generally have to get off at at least one other station and hoof it between trains).
No wonder Parisians are usually skinny, despite all that wine and cheese. We are too sedentary by far.
