How awful. As the parent it has to be hard to go on after something like this.

This story is just horrific. If that would have been my son I would have jumped in after him.

As a parent of a VERY "adventurous" 2.5 yr old - it scares the crap out of me. And I can totally can see how a kid can climb a fence. My 15 mo old climbs his playpen, so.....

That is just terrible... I cannot even begin to imagine what is going through the parents head right now.

I feel horrible for the family, especially the mom. Why she would let go enough of the child where he could lose his balance I have no idea.
From reading the article I can only hope the child was killed in the fall and not by the dogs as bad as that sounds.

I have a hard time imagining putting my toddler up on a fence 15 feet above a pack of wild dogs. I would probably have died trying to save him after letting him fall in.

How horrible for everyone. I saw a photo of the woman who spoke for the zoo and she looked devastated. I'm sure I've done things like that where my son could have gotten hurt and didn't.

This is a post from another board from someone who lives there and knows that zoo well.
His mother STOOD HIM UP on a wooden railing 4 feet off the ground from where she was standing, which was about 14-15 feet above the bottom of the enclosure. This is an overlook, with another mesh barrier fence under it. He fell off the railing, bounced off the barrier, and fell into the exhibit.
There was a reinforced glass children's window a few feet away, where children can look through if they are not tall enough to see over the barriers.
There are signs posted everywhere. This mom chose to disobey the signage because she surely just didn't think twice that anything bad could actually happen, and her baby died. And now she has to live with that... and everyone who was there will live with it forever.
I'm not indicting the mom or calling her names. But this situation didn't have to happen and should NOT have happened. Wherever you are, PLEASE observe safety postings for the sake of your kids. Even if you think "what are the odds?" -- clearly, bad stuff can happen in the blink of an eye.
This exhibit is really well-designed. The railing she put him on is at least 4 feet high and angled so that it tilts toward the people, not the exhibit. It comes up to my armpit, and there is no way for a small kid to climb the barrier - there are no toeholds, etc.
The zoo is closed indefinitely. I feel terrible for everyone involved and I also feel really badly for the keepers who maintain those animals. The animals pretty much did exactly what their instinct requires. I am sure the keepers feel beyond horrible and I know that there has been a lot of horrible and unfair commentary about the zoo staff and the safety of the exhibt. The sad answer is that it's entirely impossible to protect people from themselves at every turn. There are idiots out there calling for armed guards on all the zoo exhibits (?!).

mpl - that puts another slant on it. I didn't see any pictures of the area itself.

Weird....I read that post from Bundles on the other board, too. The world is a small place.

This story is just horrific. If that would have been my son I would have jumped in after him. I was thinking the same thing. If it were my kid I'd jump down and take on all 11 of those dogs if I had to. If nothing else they might focus on me than on my kid.

I'll say it again - even if you do put your kid up, how the HELL are you not wrapping your arms around him and holding him? ?? What does it mean "lost his balance" ? The whole thing makes me sick to my stomach!!! Too many people are probably going to have to pay the price for this. Lena

Mom probably couldn't get over the child proof wall. Kind of what I was thinking, it's designed so that you dont' climb on it. The kid only got up there cuz mom lifted him. Unless a bunch of people were going to lift mom up there, jumping in doesn't seem realistic.

I don't get it.... you put him up and hold on to him....you lean him against yourself. I've done it....
Anyway, that woman will probably never recover from this. This might sounds harsh but I hope she doesn't have any more kids (currently) bc life would be hell for them from now on....

Sorry, but I can't see ever putting a kid up on top of a barrier fence 15 feet above a pack of wild dogs no matter how much they're leaning on me.

I have put my daughter on top of fences and had my wife or mother or mother-is-law yell at me that I was being too careless. I didn't think so, but maybe I was.

I can see lifting the kid up to see over the wall, maybe chest high so their arms are above the wall but their waist is below it. And then the parent holding on. But standing your kid on a wall like that?
No matter what happened, that poor, poor mother will never forget it. I bet she gets checked into a facility soon. She's going to need some serious help to deal with the guilt and what she saw.

It's the 'Dingos Ate my Baby' thing all over again...
It's just awful. Try as you might you can't save people from their own poor judgement. You just can't.

The boy was just two years old. I understand as they grow they get heavier. But couldn't she have just picked him up and held him in her arms to look?
