My DH and I were thinking of going to Maine for lobster season. Any ideas on where would be best to go and when?

Lobster is available year round. Summer is when Maine is most crowded with tourists. Winter is the coldest season. Spring and fall are relatively short in length especially interior Maine.

If you want sandy beaches, stay around Kennebunk and Kennebunkport. If you want Windjammers, etc., try Camden and Rockport. If you want nature, head up to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. ETA: If you want great Minor League baseball and hip and trendy dining, go to Portland. All of the above are on the coast. Lobster is a salt water being. Of course, there is more to Maine than the coast and lobsters. White water canoeing on the Allagash River, Mt. Katahdin, fly fishing on Moosehead Lake, outlets in Kittery and Freeport (home to L. L. Bean), etc. Maine is a deceivingly big and busy state.

No, we don't walk away. But when we're holding on to something precious, we run.

We honeymooned in Maine. Mostly along the coast. It was lovely. If you're going to whale watch though, you need to check for best times for that too.

It really doesn't matter. I live in Maine - you can get lobster year round, no problem. Some have a preference for hard vs soft shell - I honestly don't know that there is a difference in taste - but hard shells are a bigger PIA to get into.
It really depends on what else you would want to do while here. I would recommend visiting late May-early October. The rest of the year the weather can limit other activities.

And if you are hoping to swim, look more towards the Cape as you will likely freeze to death in the water even in the summer

Love, love, love Maine. I vacation there every summer. One evening of each vacation is dedicated exclusively to our lobster fest.

There is a short span of early summer when the lobsters are moulting. That means the shell is soft and easy to crack, but you risk finding more water than meat in some.
Coast of Maine is spectacular..... bar none. I live less than an hour away from their southern beaches. Then there's skiing which is excellent. Love Maine!
