We don't have a dog, but we do dog sit for friends regularly. Since we're not owners, maybe my dog walking etiquette is rusty, so I wanted to run a situation past the board. As I was driving yesterday, I noticed one of the women from the neighborhood and her standard (big - like 80 pound) poodle about 30 feet into the front yard of a house she did not live in, where the poodle was taking a prodigious about 6 feet from the house's front door. The dog was on a 6' or 8' leash and the owner was holding a bag and looked like she was preparing to scoop up the mess. While it's nice that she was cleaning up after her dog and I realize that dogs do sometimes go on yards that aren't their own, does anyone else think this is a little weird to let your dog doodie that deep in the front yard of someone else? When I'm walking a dog we're sitting, I try to keep the dog either off the yards entirely or in the first 2'-3' of the yards of people I know on the way to the park. No way in heck would I let my dog wander way into someone else's yard to leave a present by their front door. Even when it's scooped up, that just seems really rude. What say you?

Going that close is major trespassing. But at least she cleaned the poop.

I think it's tacky but she did clean it up. Milee is the Poodle blond/reddish color and is the owner a big girl (tall and not thin) that is blond? I ask because my neighbor 2 doors down does that exact same thing and she just moved to your area.

No, he's black and she's short and very fit. But interesting coincidence.
How weird would it be to walk out your front door and literally run into this?

Don't know why, but this whole neighbors-in-the-yard thing has just come in a group lately, which is odd because in the past 5 years we've lived here, I just haven't seen it before. First, a couple of weeks ago was the crazy yelling lady who drove into the driveway to lecture me. Next was the dog walking lady (and even though she cleans up, I still have to wonder a little which one of the dog walkers lets their dog walk in my yard because I do find the occasional pile in my yard...) and last were the neighbor's lawn team. While working at home, I heard a huge commotion in the driveway, went out to discover 5 guys in my driveway - one on a lawn tractor, one with a push mower, one with a weed whacker and two with gardening tools. Turns out the neighbor (yes, this is the one who thinks I have a small child living in squalor watching porn) planted a bunch of stuff and now they can no longer access her back yard through her yard because there's no way through. Instead, they have to get to her yard by going through my yard, around my 100' hedge and back again. I was a little surprised, but figured it wouldn't help anything to prevent this, it would only make it hard on a bunch of lawn guys who weren't the cause of the problem anyway.
So maybe I'm just abnormally attuned to people in each other's yards but it's all done and there will be nothing else weird for the next five years.

DH and I were outside by his truck one night and a guy let his 2 big dogs take a big crap in our yard right by us and just walked away. I chased him down and yelled at him and told him he had some nerve and he better come back and pick it up. He was so surprised it was an issue. I told him at least pretend to care when the homeowner is right there! Another neighbor about attacked him while screaming and yelling at him so he now avoids our area. LOL! Another time I was outside putting up Christmas decorations and some kid comes by with her large dog and just stood there why he pissed all over my garland and bow I just wrapped on our mailbox. I just stood there with my mouth hanging open. I couldn't yell at a kid unless they are hurting an animal so I sucked that one up.
That would have been hilarious if that was the same person that lived here. I'd have given you her name. ;D
Probably for the same reason we have been. Too many weird happenings since we've lived here too. It's been 8 years. We even had a guy pulling his boat (he services our pond out back and needs the boat) try to go through our yard AFTER we put the fence in. Which was one of the reasons we put it in because he'd just drive right through our back yard - boat and all. That's kind of surreal when that happens.

Am I old fashioned and this is the new normal? Don't know if you read my thread from a few weeks ago when my friend's son had the run-in with police, but when I tried to talk to her as gently as possible about how it wasn't unreasonable for neighbors to not want kids running through their yards, this is something she brought up. She brought up that neighbors walk their dogs on her yard and she walks her dog on theirs, so it's all just how people do stuff. I didn't think that was true, but now I'm not so sure.

It isn't true. It's disgusting and just shows the lack of class that has become the norm.

Is that the kids with some kind of weapons? BB guns or something? Yeah - I'd be that neighbor that called the police if they were shooting birds, etc. They need to be out in the country with that type of behavior. It's against the law here which is why we moved here. And we have a good HOA who will set these families straight who think it's ok to hurt the wild life and run over the ducks, etc. Some strange people out there these days. They are out-numbering people with a conscience which makes us look weird for thinking they are doing something wrong on OUR property. Silly, mean us.

Avid dog person here- It's rude- even if you clean it up. Occasionally, like a kid, a dog can't hold it anymore and accidents will happen and all you can do is clean it up. But you shouldn't just let them go anywhere - just because.
I don't even let my dogs pee in someones yard. I keep them moving until we reach an empty lot, or other acceptable place for them to do their business.

I'm 61. This isn't anything new. I remember my dad when I was a kid chasing down neighbors who let their dogs take a in the yard. If he caught them, he made them clean it up.

milee: I would actually think twice before letting your neighbor's lawn guys cut through your yard as a regular thing. Forgotten what it's called, but I think that can create a situation where you are legally obligated to allow access through your property at all times. Any legal types wanna jog my memory here? And yes, I think the dog-walking behavior you describe is a bit rude. Still, at least she picked it up. I've seen far worse examples of dog owners behaving badly. EDIT: Easement, that's what it's called. Anyway I think if there's no other way to access her yard and you allow access through yours over an extended period of time, she essentially winds up with the right to trespass.

We have neighboor who's dog walking without leash early in the morning. It's big lab's size animal. Old and grumpy looking. I am kind of afraid of it. However its walking its walk and where it shits I have no idea. I supposed my loan is the victim. My dog sometimes gets on people's loan not too close to home. And I hate it because I am standing there feeling like it was me doodling there. However I think its better than if she did it on the sidewalk that is paved. In the grass its not so visible...and g-d forbidd animal has diarrhea... WOW! That's cool subject we are with...

I have a toy poodle that I walk off leash. She stays on the sidewalk if there is one and no more than 5 feet or so onto lawns if there isn't. It is rude ot allow an animal to roam another person's yard even without the pooping. Let alone letting the animal do so close to the door to the house.

What a lot of people don't know is that dogs have very good sense of smell and are territorial. So if a dog urinates on your lawn (unless it's cleaned up with vinegar water or heavy rain) it's going to leave a scent and encourage other dogs to go there. Not cool. There was one guy in our neighborhood that continually let his LHaso poop in our yard- and wouldn't clean up. I had seen him, but hadn't been able to catch him (short of running out in my nightie). I happened to see him in his driveway one day, so I knew where he lived. The next time I saw him, I got dressed and took my very large dog out for a walk. I knocked on his door and told him that if he didn't stop his dog from defecating in my yard, I was going to let mine start using his yard. Needless to say, it stopped.

milee, keep your dog off my property, even if you pick up the dumpings. That is what the tree lawn is for, and you should still pick that up. We had a temporary neighbor who used to let her dog crap on lawns and didn't pick up. I had to go to TSC to get crap to keep the pest off the lawns. I never caught her, but walla, she got evicted, no more messes.

If you catch the poopie's owner and he refuse to clean up - can you call township? Do they have an authority to warn the dog owner?

I keep our dogs on a short leash while walking them. If they're gonna it'll be within reach of the sidewalk. We've had a few 'gifts' left over the 10 years we've been living where we do. Those few taken against the number of folks in the neighborhood walking their dogs is not statistically significant. But if you're out for a walk and the police tell you to stop, you'd best bow down or your dog will pay the ultimate price... www.wowt.com/news/headlines/Exclusive-Dog-Shot-By-Omaha-Police-Officer-176320491.html

My two favorite posters are talking dog poop to each other. Maybe the guy whose yard was being doodied on should have shot her. Or the dog. Add that to the list of buttons we should have made up. "Shoot the bastards and keep the crap off your lawn"

I hate how inconsiderate some people are with their dogs. But I know damn well that if I make a big deal of it, they'll just make it a point to use my yard when they know I'm not home.
This really frustrates me because I honestly feel completely powerless in this situation. I have asked people politely to not allow their dogs to crap on my lawn. They pretend to agree, and then just do it anyway. And the only truly preventative measures I can really take end up hurting the dog (whose not the one at fault) instead of the owner.
I think this is just something you have to accept when you live in a "dog neighborhood". The amount of energy it would take to try and get someone (set up cameras, make a catch, file a report, and follow up...) is a lot. Either that, or I need to like... lace my property with the musk of a really fierce animal.
I've wondered whether or not I could watch dogs approach and blow a dog whistle or something.

Lion and Tiger poop works really well to keep some dogs away. Unfortunately, it attracks most of the larger sporting breeds who want to investigate.
