I discovered this weekend that my 07 Civic needs a $3500 repair .
It is just out of warranty, but would be under warranty if I lived in CA or NY. So I am a little irritated about the whole thing.
So I called Honda & explained that I understand it is out of warranty, but frustrated that it would be under warranty elsewhere. And that I purchased the car assuming that the part should have been designed to last through the warranty period in all states & therefore feel it failed early.
They were extremely nice, I was actually shocked. I thought I would be nicely told that it is out of warranty & to suck it. They are supposed to contact my dealership & give me a call by the end of the day & let me know what they can do.
What do you think they will offer? Or will they offer anything at all?

I bet they will meet you half way with the cost of the repair. Good luck.

what is wrong with it? and what is still under warranty after 3 years on a Honda (I drive 2 and know I'm pretty much screwed at 36K miles)? It is a hybrid & it is the battery that needs replacement. It has 8 yr/80K warranty in my state. Some states have laws that emissions systems have to be warrantied 10 yr/150K & that includes the battery. I'll admit I bought the car knewing this would be a big repair, but based on the 150K warranty I thought it would last much longer & am really disappointed. There are 3 yrs of the hybrid that they f'ed up the battery & they are receiving a lot of flak over the issue. Especially since when they realized the issue they did a computer update in all the vehicles to extend the life of the battery. Extending the life means using it less, which means lower mpgs, which pissed off a lot of people. Without the computer update it is possible the battery would have died within the warranty period, instead it lasted just outside of it. Little pissed off at honda over the whole thing.

That makes sense, since CA and NY have higher emisssions standards. I actually had a similar issue with my Civic, needed an oxygen sensor. Most states have a warantee to 50K miles, my state was one of 6 that the warantee holds to 80K miles. Of course it went at 78K miles.
I also bet that they'll meet you halfway on the cost.

A fellow hybrid owner here. I feel your pain. I had my battery replaced last spring. Fortunately, it was still under warranty. Do you know if those warranties are based on where the car was purchased or where it is when it breaks? I bought mine outside of CA and now live in CA so I'm not sure if I got in under the wire or I have a few miles left...

I also wonder if you sell the car to someone out of state, which state would determine the warranty period.

I had a 99 Accord I'd bought with 6 miles on it. A little over a year later, the dealer had to repair my transmission. About a year after that, they had to replace the transmission. About a year later, that transmission was bad.
I had about 75k miles on the car by then, so they told me I had to pay $5k this time. I said I wasn't paying that, but they needed to fix my car. A couple days later, the service manager called and said Honda agreed to pay 75 percent. I said no. They finally agreed to replace the transmission again at no cost to me. While we were going back and forth, they had my car and gave me a rental until I finally got my car back.
I'd found out Honda had been having a lot of problems with transmissions for that model year, but they didn't do a recall. I'm sure that, plus my car's history was why my persistence paid off. It was a hassle, but overall I loved the service department at that dealer.
Then I traded that one in and got an 03 Accord. A few months later I got a recall notice for the 03 in the mail..... For the transmission. LOL

singlemom, yes there was a recall for my 2003 Accord. Recall ID #48610 Recall Date: APR 15, 2004 Model Affected: 2003 Honda Accord Summary: ON SOME MINI VANS, SPORT UTILITY AND PASSENGER VEHICLES, CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS CAN RESULT IN HEAT BUILD-UP BETWEEN THE COUNTERSHAFT AND SECONDARY SHAFT SECOND GEARS IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, EVENTUALLY LEADING TO GEAR TOOTH CHIPPING OR GEAR BREAKAGE. Consequences: GEAR FAILURE COULD RESULT IN TRANSMISSION LOCKUP, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH. Read more: www.motortrend.com/cars/2003/honda/accord/recalls/#ixzz2AqTtmnenI was not happy when I opened my mail that day.

Yup, my van was a 2003 and it was recalled. They fixed it at no expense to me. I never had a single problem with the transmission after the recall (or before actually..).

Swamp, I would still buy a Honda over pretty much any GM, Ford, or Chevy.
My DH did buy a Chevy Traverse, but that was his decision. If I move back to the states I will buy a Honda CRV. I own a 1996 Honda Civic here.

The good-to-lemon ratio is much higher with Honda/Toyota. I will say that Ford, Chrysler, and Dodge are getting better... DH says their dealership has a lot fewer warranty repairs than they did a few years ago. Don't know about Chevy/GM.

I don't disagree with you, but from reading YM, you'd think that Honda/Toyota vehicles are perfect.

So they didn't make any offer yet. They called yesterday afternoon for more details. One of the things she asked is if I had ever owned a Honda before. I said no & then threw in that this is the first car I'd ever purchased new & that I am young. Figured it wouldn't hurt my chances if they figured they could lose a customer with many car purchasing years ahead ;D
Honestly I really want them to pay for the whole thing, but would be pretty happy with half. I suck at negotiating & they literally hold all the cards, they don't have to do anything for me. If say they offer me half, is there a way to ask for more without sounding like an ungrateful child?

"Gosh, half, I don't know... I mean, it would be completely under warranty if I lived in CA or NY... is there anything else you can do?"
Worth a shot. They may not pay more, but they're not going to withdraw the offer if you ask for more.

The only lemon I've ever owned was a Ford Escort that I bought in the mid-80's. A total lemon and I didn't keep it long. It would just stop running while I was driving and no repair shop could figure out why.
I have owned my one Toyota and two Honda's for over 100K miles. I realize no brand is perfect, but I've had great luck with mine.
I just bought a 2012 Honda Fit and am hoping for good luck with it.

Woohoo!!! Honda will do the repair for $250. And I didn't even have to argue them down. I suppose I could have argued for more, but am pretty freaking happy right now. A week ago I was annoyed with Honda & now I absolutely love them. Their customer service rocks!!

Good work Angel! I'm on my 4th Accord and have never had a problem. (Lease) In my younger years, I always bought used Honda Civics. My daughter is driving a 2000 Civic with about 135k miles on it, and no problems.
