Is there any reputable website where you can file both federal and state income tax forms for free? This would be a very simple tax return. Or if not free, any idea what the cheapest would be.
I use Turbotax for myself, but I'm looking for something I could use to do my mother's returns for her.

I was never able to find a place where you can e-file the state return for free. Go to the IRS site and find the free e-file for the federal. Some states allow you to e-file on their website. I know Colorado does and I have done that before.

Massachusetts does, I looked it up the other day - if your AGI is under $58k I think. Check w/ your state. I'm trying to figure out cheaper/free ways to do our taxes this year too.

waffle.... here's a link to details from the IRS about free e-file through them www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118508,00.html some states have similar programs, check your state's department of tax website... there are also some community groups that may have similar free or low cost programs

thanks everyone. I'm going to work on them this weekend. If Indiana doeesn't have a free e file option she'll just have to live with the old fashioned mail them in option. Thanks again.

Virginia no longer provides free efiling. I recomend that Virginians file paper state returns.

Minn has many options available thru Mn Dept of Rev. By starting there, both state & fed are filed free.

VITA does provide free efiling. "Low income" is around $50,000 or less.

AARP also has sites and provides assistance to both seniors and low income. Their low income requirements are the same as those of VITA.

We've had very good luck using taxslayer.com the last couple years. 9.95 for federal.
