It looks like everyone might be in for a big blow! How prepared are you for power outages lasting 2-3 days?
Carl, are people stocking up yet on food and water?
Living in hurricane country for many years, and now in the land of ice storms, we are usually prepared for anything reasonable mother nature sends our way.
To all in the possiblility of harms way, be safe!!!

I hear you, Blonde Granny. Thanks for the good vibes Last year I lost power for 6 days. I am very scared about what's coming now. I am trying to get ready; the car is filled with gas, I have groceries, and tomorrow I'm buying more. Another thing I'll do is check for pet shelters. If it comes to a really bad situation and I have to evacuate, I want my cat to be somewhere safe, too. Please, everybody in the East Coast check up Petfinder.com to see where you can find a shelter for your pet during the storm. Best luck to everyone.

Seems like the perfect potential crisis to push back the election and declare a crisis.

No one was talking about this storm much until today here. Then all of a sudden they start saying it will be like the storm of 1944 that walloped us. So I have plenty of water (some of the liquid is not really water ), food and flashlights and batteries. If it really hits the fan we are just going to pack the truck, which has a full tank of gas, and head toward PA. Where I would stop is anyone's guess. It is weird. For hurricane Irene they had already ordered a state of emergency and basically ordered us out at gunpoint. Now they are just saying that people who normally flood should evacuate.

Beach, do they think it will make landfall south of you or go north? If it takes the northern track the damage will be much less to the NJ coast. Not sure what I'd do with a long power outage. I rather hoping to avoid that and any water issues as well. No power loss or water loss for me during Irene. Lots of flooding and traffic issues. I'm hoping for no more than Irene and preferably less. I hadn't heard about the 1944 storm, but some article mentioned 1938? The references to Bob don't really help Beach and I because Bob caused NJ less damage than Irene and Floyd.

I hope this storm turns East and goes away from you all. But if not please prepare and stay safe!! thanks, POM. the last weather forecast I saw had Sandy cutting back inland around NJ, then fettering out in the eastern/Midwest. while I worry about my friends in the NJ area (and those posters here) I am pretty happy to *hopefully* be avoiding a direct hit myself - I lost power for 3 or 4 days for both Irene last August as well as the unnamed storm that dumped a foot of snow on my back patio last October (for the only measurable snowfall we saw....) Sandy is supposed to hit here in MA Monday night. can all of y'all check in after she passes you so we know you're okay?

I was at 2 grocery stores today and neither seemed super busy and I didn't see people really stocking up. Really, most people here are prepared for blizzards and such. Our area can't take another flood. We had a devastating one in 2006 and another last September. I think that is everyone's biggest fear here. People are just recovering from last year... The latest forecast I saw was 3-6 inches of rain, with locally heavier amounts. That is not good. My basement will be flooded...again... We lost power for almost 24 hours over the summer and it was HELL. I have plenty of food, and can cook on my gas stove. I will probably go buy a few more batteries this weekend to make sure I can run my radio and a couple small lights if we lose power. Any power loss over 24-48 hours will be devastating as I have 2 freezers full of food. I have a wood burning fireplace, if needed, for heat. I rarely use it, but, it's an option. I'm really hoping it is not as bad as the hype...

This storm is a hurricaine but it is acting more like a NorEaster. NorEaster do more damange to NJ/NY than hurricains normally do. Hurricains have a counter clock wise rotation. Because of that they rotate to the north bringing the brunt of their wind and rain force to the north. The people who are just to the north of where it hits will take the brunt of it's force. It also has to cross the Gulf Stream. Since the gulf stream is warm it will give Sandy a burst of energy and stregthen it. That is why it is only a trop storm now but will be a Cat 1 or 2 when it hits land. I keep hoping that it lands way north of here. It looks like if it does hit here I would have to go all the way to Iowa to get away from it. I am so tired of hurricains! I can only remember a few in my lifetime and yet we will have had two major storms in just a year. What's up with that?

Downgraded to a tropical storm. Maybe it has slowed down or will drift the other way.
Thinking of you guys up that way. Try to keep in touch if you can.

It was always going to slow... It's the 'perfect storm' of it joining with other weather systems that will eventually cause all of the problems. I'm in Florida, might not make it back to pa by the 1st... Hope I make it by the 6th, but they are talking long term power outages Hope i don't have to drive back to vote.
