So we were going on vacation one year and I told someone that we were going to NYC. With our children. 'OMG, do you know how dirty that place is?' So I said 'have you ever been' and they said 'no'. We were going to another city and I was told the crime rate was high. Ummmm, have you read the papers where we live lately? Again I asked 'have you ever been'? The answer was 'no'. We were going to put in new counter tops and were looking at granite. 'Wow as big as your kitchen is, it will cost a fortune' So I asked 'do you have granite counter tops? 'no'. So now I have expressed an interest in something and all I hear is 'do you know how much that is going to cost', when these people have NO idea what they are talking about.
eerrrggg.............

Maybe you should stop reading some of the posts here. I'm kind of kidding. ;D But yeah, I've met enough Know-it-alls that talk out of their behinds enough that I just smile and let what they say go in one ear and out the other and NEVER take their advice or do the opposite of what they say.

It's just frustrating. And it is always the same people. Seems like a plus to me. You know who to avoid and not to talk to. People are going to be who they are or who they want to be. You can only choose how to deal with them or not.

They are just telling you all the excuses they give themselves for not doing the stuff you plan to do. Negative know it alls I know don't end up doing much or taking many risks.

I don't know... Seems like the know it all in the op is spot on the mark.
I have been to New York City. It is dirty. Also loud and the constant honking of horns could drive you bat shit crazy. Large cities do have higher crime. Not sure what city in particular. Last of all, granite does cost a small fortune.

Large cities do often have higher crime than small towns. They also usually have more culture, art, dining, shopping, and opportunities. If I knew someone were going to visit a city, I would probably mention the positive realities rather than the negative ones.

So the only people who could possibly know what granite costs are those with granite in their kitchens?
If someone told you not to eat poison because it would kill you, would you dismiss their advice if they were someone who'd never eaten poison themselves?
It doesn't take visiting a city or installing granite to be able to have knowledge of a city's crime rate or granite cost.

The last time I drove into DC, there was constant honking because we were stopped at a red light. Damn people the light is red, it means stop not go. Oh and one person was going to get out of their car to start a fight with another person. I've found NYC much more civilized.

Yeah, well Tampa is just as awful. I hate this dirty traffic jammed city. Give me Clearwater any day.

The one thing I noticed in NYC that I haven't noticed in other big cities (e.g. DC) is the huge pileup of trash on the curbs over the weekend. But that would never stop me from visiting, as I love the broadway shows, etc.

Not everybody likes the "middle of nowhere". Not every inch of NYC or any city has crime/higher crime. It's been a long time since I have been to NYC and I don't remember thinking it was dirty.

I am at this whole thread, especially Doxie. And I assumed from the title that Happy was referring to YM...

"But so what - it's NYC - everyone should go a couple of times.... "
I agree!
Doxie, seriously, you come across as if you come from a royal family or something! Get over yourself. You have something negative to say about every place except for your tiny town. Guess what? You are a townie, not a royal princess...

"Why - are they so egotistical that they think most people are dumb and need their back seat guidance on everything - even places they haven't gone?"
I think it is plain and simple jealousy.

That is my dad to a tee. There is nothing you can say that he won't either one-up, tell you you're wrong, or launch into the "BUT, did you know...."? One time I was out to dinner with him, stepmom, and DH. Stepmom ordered a cappucino and we were treated to "the history of cappucino," something about Capuchin monks living in caves... I swear he went on for 20 minutes. I tend to take after him in many regards so I try to put a lid on my know-it-all tendencies. Not always successfully

Did he also link it back to Greece and the Greeks?
With my MIL she just wants to feel useful.
DH has lived with her his entire life and I've been with him for 8 years now, we tune it out.

Only complete moron can tell thats 'dirty' is New York's description! It's Fabulous! Fantastic! and btw crime in NY not as nearly as high as in some hellholes certain people living...and about dirt...it's YOU...tourists who come from villages who throw trash on the streets because you have NO idea about existence of trash cans and if you see those - you look inside and trying to ramage trought 'what's in there and 'is it free''?

they're not "know-it-alls" as much as "Debbie Downers". Everything is bad or can be made to sound bad. I just pay them no mind. Now for TRUE "know-it-alls", my dad is pretty bad. When DH (then BF) was telling him how he was studying to become a pharmacist, my mom-mom (my dad's mom) asked him something about diabetes. Then my dad decided to treat the two of them to the story of how a person gets diabetes... yes, the man with barely a high school education.

The person Happyscooter describes seems more like a "negative nelly" than a know-it-all. Always downing anything someone else is doing, possibly there is more than a little jealousy at play.
