DS wants to keep playing hockey. Last year, it was 2 days a week. This year, it's 4 days a week. He's freakin' 6.

Yeah, I'm with you. I'm seriously doubting how good it is for kids to be racing around so much. I want to sit with my kids and do puzzles, etc. I really wrestle with finding the appropriate balance.

He really enjoys it, but I think it's too much. 2 days a week was perfect.

We don't need no stinkin' driver's license. WE just drive the tractors through the potato fields.

Tell him that the NHL can never seem to get their act together between the players an the owners. That should be enough to put him off hockey.

Tough Times thought Yonkers was upstate NY. lol
Sounds like your little guy is more committed than the NHL players.

Youth sports' schedules can be overwhelming at times for sure. But, I like to think keeping constructively busy with youth and high school sports is a good thing for my kids. It keeps their names out of the police log in the local newspaper.

6 sounds young for 4 days a week - but I will say that I wish my son was in a 4-day, 60-90 minute program. The kid makes me crazy with his energy. Recess no longer exists, and he isn't enough of an independent thinker to figure out how to just "go outside and play." So, he sits inside and plays video games or watches TV. I wish he had something structured to do every day - just to burn off the juice.

Well, if you think you can handle having the extra 2 days added to your plate I say go for it. I wouldn't, but I am a bad Mom because currently neither of my kids is enrolled in any extracurricular activity.

Let them go out and pick by hand like the rest of us did. It builds character and then they can save to buy their own darn tricycles.

Who needs seasonal immigrants to pick cotton, tomatoes, apple, melons and the like. Send out the tots until they are school age.

On a serious note, Swamp, you did recently express the desire/need to cut back on your schedule. Will 2 more days of hockey mess with your plans?

We probably wouldn't go for it either. We limit extra activities. I don't know how families do it. My nearly 5 year is in bed at 7. School gets out at 3:20, and the kids play on the playground for a half hour, getting home at 4. Even on the days the kids leave right after school is done, there's not a ton of time for activities.

My neighbor's 12 year old DD is on 2 soccer teams. In talking to my neighbor, her DD hasn't had a weekend day to herself since mid-August. I'm not sure about 1 of the teams, but the other team is constantly travelling to different games on the weekends. And it's not a half hour travel. Some of the games have been 2 to 6 hours away. My DH thinks that is ridicouls (sp?). FWIW, my DH was involved in traveling sports when he was growing up (he was a very good baseball pitcher), but they didn't start "traveling" until mid-teens, not pre-teens like now. Also, we have moved states from where he grew up to now.

For my family - if practice went from 4:30 to 5:30 (or even 6) it would be okay - we would eat together at 6 or 6:30, and still have time to do homework, etc. But my daughter is in practice from 4:30 to 7:30 three nights a week - and that is terrible. We never eat together on those nights, and usually are moving in all sorts of directions. Even though the rest of us could eat together - it never seems to work that way. If two of us sit together, we call it a "Win."

You could always ruin the sport for him by becoming one of those over-competitive obnoxious hockey parents. And if any of the other parents get pissed at you, shout that you'll sue them because that's what you do.
