Ok, I am trying to remember (sometimes it is a challenge) what 12 foods we used to eat on Christmas Eve. I know: Piroghi, Fish, Garlic, Honey, Communion Wafers, Lentil Soup. Then I get foggy. There were actually 12 things served on Christmas Eve Dinner. What were the others? Ken, jump in if you know.

the 7 fishes thing is traditionally Italian though. I don't know of other backgrounds that do it too.

Home made bread. And of course we fasted and waited for the first star to begin dinner.

My dad immigrated from Poland when he was a child and tradition was to have fish on Christmas eve. I have no idea why or about any other traditions, but I still have fish on Christmas eve...it feels very weird not to have it. ETA: It may have something to do with Catholicism.

Borscht was an Easter treat. I finally remembered why I have trouble with Christmas Eve Dinner. One side of the family did one thing and the other side did another. Dad's family did lentil soup and Mom's side did Mushroom soup, etc. I mentioned the common things above. Piroghi were filled with Cabbage, Potatoes or Prunes, but from Cheesy's link, I did remember the dates or figs.
