I have a Whirlpool oven. I was going to clean it the other day. Pressed the self-cleaning button. It locked the door and gave me a code with numbers and letters. I could not get it unlocked, nor would it start to clean. So when DH gets home, he starts 'fiddling' with it and now it is still locked but the bottom is now open. As in it is hanging on by the lock at the top. We called the 800# and they said 'when can we come out?' Um, after I try to fix it myself. Please guys, this is not what I need right now. HELP!

Try unplugging it. It may go back to the default setting.

We shut off the breaker for 30 seconds and then turned it back on. Still didn't work. But part of my problem is DH 'trying to fix it'. Again, the bottom is open and the top is still locked.

Yes, I have the manual. It says turn off the breaker. Then it says 'call for service.'

Hve you googled the error code? That would at least find you people who knew exactly what you were talking about.

happy, can you try this:
Lift the top of the stove up (the way you would do if you were cleaning the underneath of the burners. Once the top is lifted you have a birds eye view of the hook that locks the door. Slide your finger in and manually push the lock open.

It is a smooth glass top stove. But when DH gets home, we will try that. Thanks! I never thought of that.

When you say you checked the manual...did you read the manual or THE MANUAL? Inside most appliances there is a small booket that lists common error codes, fixes, and spare parts information for the service technician. This is not the owner's manual that came in the box. It is probably stuck to the inside of one of the outer housings, like the bottom front - or just underneath, reachable from the detached front bottom plate.

Are you sure it was the right breaker? (not kidding, this has happened before). Make sure the range does not work once the breaker is off. And then try to keep it off for more than 30 seconds (a few minutes?) and try to open the door before turning the power back on to the range.

It is all made together. We tried to unscrew some of it and pull it apart and that didn't work. So we will try something different today. DH is a drama queen so I can't take him working on it more than a few minutes at a time.

Sorry to hear happy. Is it an F5 error that you are getting? I did a search, and it seems to be a common problem with the Whirlpools. This is how one person fixed it:
F5 error code stands for a problem with the door latch.
To unlock the door:
First, disconnect the power to the range (either unplug it or turn the power off at the circuit breaker). Pull the range out and remove the back panel. Your range has a door latch in the front and a door latch solenoid (with latch switches) in the back. There is a thin metal rod that connects the two. When the board sends a signal to the solenoid to lock the door, the solenoid turns the rod which locks the latch. With the back panel off, you should now see both the solenoid and the rod. You can now manually release the latch by turning the rod (probably clockwise). You should now be able to open the door.
Put everything back the way it was and with the door open turn the power back on. Press and hold any key on the board for one minute. This should release the error code. Press CANCEL and give it a few minutes to see if the code comes back.
