Has anyone seen the new show on Oxygen - My Shopping Addiction? It airs on Monday nights, and I caught the sneak preview on Sunday. my-shopping-addiction.oxygen.com/The first episode featured two girls, from different ends of the spectrum. One had inherited millions from a grandmother, and had moved to Las Vegas. The second was from Los Angeles, in what looked like a middle-class neighborhood, whose addiction was the 99 Cents store. They had the 'intervention,' and then each was working with a professional to try to identify the roots of their addiction, and working toward a solution. This ties into another thread somewhat where people were discussing windfalls. The girl who inherited, was taken to a CFP who outright told her that at her current rate of spending - around $30K/month - that she would be broke in four years. She got upset, told her she didn't need any help, and the ending credits noted that she had continued to shop. Her one good deed was donating a few outfits to Dress for Success, and throwing in the shoes to match. I would like to think that if I came into money, especially money that someone else had worked a lifetime for, that I would have more respect for it than to piss it away. I understand upgrading your wardrobe or your car, but it seemed like a neverending loop for her. Thoughts?

I need to set my DVR to this. I love watching shows that horrify me.
Not only is everything at the 99 cent store crappily made, but it's probably made in China and has lead and cadmium in it. It's probably toxic as well.

$30K a month! I guess it's like any other addiction; she may have to bottom out before she stops. In her case, bottoming out may be when she blows the whole inheritance. Did they show her home? I'm imagining something out of hoarders, with every space filled with merchandise.

The $30K/month girl was buying $5K dresses from Tom Ford and $16K Hermes bags. So while her closet had a lot of stuff in it, she was organized. She also had a few pictures in her living room from photo shoots. Glamour shots of her in Greece, in the rain, etc. Those didn't seem like 'budget' items either. The discount store girl had a bit of a stash, but it was like a home from the Extreme Couponing show, with rows of dishwashing liquid.

So on oxygen she has a shopping addiction that needs to be fixed. On TLC she'd be applauded as a frugalista.
Kinda like how on the History Channel they're collectors, if they were on A&E they'd be called Hoarders.

I will have to try to catch it next time it's on. Sounds interesting.

I'll have to watch this new show and see if it becomes one of my new favorites.

Discount girl was borrowing money from her friends and family to feed her habit. Then she started in with 'I don't see why me not paying them back is a problem for them.' It went downhill from there.
I may have an impulse control problem, or shopping addiction, whatever. But I do not like owing any real people money. Banks, ehhh.

I say a preview for that and it made me so nervous and upset, I just wanted to yell at the television. So, I have opted not to watch this show.

But any time I catch any of it, it has the upside of giving me the mad urge to clean out my house some more. ;D

Watching Hoarders is the best spent hour I have. After it is over, I stand up and clean the whole house, and at least one closet.

Saw this show on demand after reading this thread. It sucks to think that her grandmother saved her whole life just so she can squander this money away on "stuff".
250k on purses 30k easy on beauty product
Sad😢😢😢

And the $1 store chic is just plain narcissistic. She is using other people money to support her habit and she doesn't care if she ever pays them back or should I say has no intentions to pay them back.
It's all about her and her wants.

Sounds like a show that used to be on a few years back, I can't remember the name. It was for MTV I think so it was geared towards young women. I remember one episode where a woman's furniture was all from a rental place, and when they came to take it back because she stopped paying the monthly bill, she hid in her apartment and waited for them to leave, laughing about it like it was some kind of game.
Most of the young women on that show seemed to have the attitude that, since they were already way, way in debt, the $100 they could save not buying that next pair of jeans wouldn't really put a dent in their debt, so they might as well buy the jeans anyway.
I do remember another woman who wanted to go to a in patient facility for treatment for her shopping addiction, and she wanted her mom to pay for it. Mom wouldn't, so the young lady claimed she it was her mom's fault that she couldn't stop shopping.
I could only watch those shows for a few minutes. The sense of entitlement, the willful disregard for other people's financial situations (all of them owed family members money and refused to pay them back) just made me too annoyed to watch a whole episode.
