President Obama has set a new precedent. He will be in Chicago this week to vote absentee, and Michelle already mailed her ballot in to Chicago. They are the first Presidential couple to have not voted on election day. I guess if they vote early in Chicago, they can vote often

And the point is? ETA: if the Obamas traveled to Chicago to vote on election day, there would be whining that they are wasting taxpayer money traveling to Chicago and he should be in DC working.

...because VB ran out of things to whine about? No, I am very happy right now. The east coast and west coast members here do not have a clue on the November election and who will win. I believe this board may be "all black" on Wednesday morning because it will be in mourning, and may not be available for posting.... Incidently, I and many political wonks get a kick on voting day seeing video of the President and wife entering their polling place, and exercising their right to vote. Mailing your vote in, just does not do it for me. The smell of the cool crisp air, people in line, waiting talking politics, etc, it just does not get better than that. Of course I do understand the President would not be at the end of the line, waiting his turn, but, it is a great tradition. It's an American tradition regardless of party.

VB- do you see anything wrong with voting absentee? In your personal case, out of country, no. If on business out of country, no If surgery was planned, no. In the military overseas or stateside, no. If scheduling a "pure vacation", cancel it. I believe absentee balloting should not be postmarked or allowed more than one week in advance, due to things that might actually influence your vote decision, and change your mind. Now the President can do whatever he wants, but I still like to see the family go to the polls. I also see internet voting in our lifetime, but, to me, that is the end of the Rpublic.

I imagine the whole thing works out to be a nice PSA for voter participation. Hey America, look! There are other ways for you to participate even if you can't get to the polls on 11/6.
(Anybody think the President is likely to change his mind between now and election day?)

Bob: I love working at McDonalds. Bill: Wha...? Bob: The crisp crackling of the deep fryer. The smell of pickles and mayo wafting out from heat-kissed burgers. The shrill, imperative beeping of the alarm on the McNuggets frier when its quarry is cooked to a golden crisp. It just does not get better than that. Bill: I... see... Bob: Feel the caress of the uniform against your skin, Bill. Hear the thrum of the cola dispensers as their icy ejaculate surges into waiting cups, and know that we are alive. We are alive, Bill! Bill: Right. But... I still need that cheeseburger and fries. to VB for finding happiness in the most unlikely of places.

I don't know what's happened, but in my day people knew how to respect the significance of a President's unwillingness to fly to his hometown on the day of the election and take in the sights and sounds of the polling station.

I think this is actually helpful. It shows voters that if for some reason they will be unable to vote in person on election day, they should still vote on absentee voter ballots. It might also show that people can be early voters. This sets a good example in early and absentee voting.

I just can't imagine anything changing the Obama's minds on who they are going to vote for in the next few weeks.

I think that Eisenhower had the right idea. As I recall, he admitted that he had never voted in his life until he ran for president.

They would never allow it.
Internet voting would allow the public to hold referendums on individual matters. It would become more like a democracy than a republic. A democracy can't be bought or controlled nearly as easily.
So rest assured.
