Wii

I'm thinking of buying the Wii for my daughter (21) for Christmas. So..
1. Is it hard to hook up? 2. What else do I have to buy? I see they sell controls, but are they for certain games? 3. What games do I want? I'm sure we would like the dance one.
Thanks!

We have a Wii but honestly haven't turned it on since we got the Kinect for Xbox. (And I feel terrible for Nintendo, since they did pioneer the technology... but the Kinect is much better).
It's pretty easy to hook up if you have some knowledge of your TV settings.
It comes with the stick controller - you can use this for the basic games. If you're into video racing, it will be worth your while to buy the steering wheel, and if you're into the sports games, you'll probably want to buy the sports package and maybe the Wii Fit set. And you'll need the guitar for Guitar Hero. But you can do a lot with the basic controller - tennis, baseball, bowling, etc.
We don't have a huge range of games, but were really into Mario Kart for a while, and have the Guitar Hero series.
IMO the dance-type games are much better with the Kinect.

The Kinect unit itself is (I think it runs around $100) but you have to have an Xbox first, and those can get pricey. Xbox + Kinect is $300ish. I think the Wii is closer to $150. BUT, you can use the Xbox for all kinds of other things - streaming Netflix is my favorite.

We have a Wii.
I believe the box came with 1 remote so you will need to buy another one if she wants to play with someone else.
We bought a pink one for my sister last Christmas and I think it was between $15-$30
Definitely easy to set up. Also came with a game and she can buy her own game if she wants too.

For a 21 year old, I would reccomend a XBox/Kinect combo rather than Wii. Wii is targeted for a younger audience...

You can stream on the wii too. Xbox requires a monthly xbox subscription as well as a Netflix one...
In our house we found xbox to be much more addictive. We got rid of it.
I like wii exercise games, but I'm sure Its personal preference.

It will come with one controller and nunchuck... You might want a second controller set, so that two can play... Although if it will be mostly for exercise, she might not need a second.

Xbox and kinect is the way to go! Just Dance is the best game ever! I don't think you have to a membership and can just play the games, but being hooked up to the internet is a must. We have the original wii and only use it to watch netflix now. Entertaining in the beginning but why play a game with a huge controller in your hand when you only need yourself for the kinect. Only an opinion from someone who enjoys occasional gaming. But I do like you can buy original nintendo games and play them

I'd go with the kinect for XBOX. The Wii is going to be replaced by the Wii U here soon. I'd get a Wii if I had younger children, but not for teenagers or a 21 year old.

Maybe I'll just get her more Uggs! We have some kind of old game console, but I'm not sure what it is. She's finishing her under grad in December and moving back home for full time work and grad school. I thought a game thing might be fun to have, but maybe we should do dancercise with an on demand program!

My advice - if you're able - wait til Black Friday. Last year it was a huge deal for Xbox + Kinect (plus one game) on sale for $299, and now that's the base price. I'm betting in a month you'll be able to get one for <$200. And if you do decide on the Wii, it will probably be at fire-sale price too.

Black Friday's a good idea, being that neither will be the hot item of the season. Black Friday is crazy in my area. I live right in the middle of quite a few major malls.

We have Wii and PS3 - the 9 year old DS prefers the PS3 and I have found that the used games for PS3 (admittedly he is a sports game nut so we are purchasing Madden, NBA 2k__, etc) are much cheaper.
FYI - Just Dance while fun is a leftie rip off! It doesn't score you properly if you hold the controller in your left v right hand.
Places like GameStop sell used controllers and used systems.

Right handed family here. But I will look for some left-handed competition.

Spooky - Just Dance is the only game in which I have not seen an option to set the handedness of the controller. DS is the leftie which seems good for baseball but poor for Just Dance. ;D

Wii U is about to come out ($350?). It will overshadow the Kinect/XBox for a while.
In the meantime the current Wii bundle is dropping to $130 & will be in store by the end of this month.
My only experience with XBox is a repeatedly breaking one. Can't say I love it.

The Wii is fun because you can get all the Mario brothers related games and those are fun.

RE: the current Wii bundle: "Nintendo is dropping the Wii console to a suggested retail price of $129.99 in advance of the busy holiday shopping season. The new configuration is beginning to arrive in stores now, and will be broadly available in the U.S. by October 28, 2012. This high-value configuration includes a black Wii console and both Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort on a single game disc, as well as a Wii Remote Plus and a Nunchuk controller – both black to match the console. This configuration replaces the current black Wii that comes with New Super Mario Bros Wii"

Thanks! For $129 I should go buy it. Even if I only use it for exercise it would be worth it.
