My 6yo DD is obsessed with all things Star Wars. Actually, both my children dress up in various characters every day, practice their light saber moves constantly, and fully and seriously plan to be droid army leaders when they grow up. For months now DD has been debating between being a Jedi for Halloween or Boba Fett. Suddenly this week she decides she wants to be a cat. In talking with her, it is very clear that the kids at school have said something to her along the lines of Jedis being a boy's costume. DD is now embarrassed to be one. No amount of persuasion on my part could convince her that it was perfectly appropriate for her to be a Jedi. DD is running around right this very minute dressed up as Darth Vader, but apparently she's in the closet at school about her true personality (although she has a Star Wars lunch box). So what are my options? A) Let her be a cat. B) Refuse to buy her the cat costume and get her the Jedi costume with the hopes that on Halloween she steps outside to trick or treat and realizes it's perfectly fine to be true to herself. Plus, I know she will play with the Jedi costume 100 times afterwards, whereas the cat costume will never be touched again. C) Other? I'm really wanting to do option B. I don't want my DD to bow down to sexism so young. OTOH, I realize I may be overthinking this a bit and I should let her follow her own assertiveness path. Thoughts?

Buy an inexpensive cat costume (if there is such a thing) and let her decide Halloween day who/what she wants to be. Give her choices. I think choices are more important lesson for her.

She's six. She isn't ready to fight for feminism. As long as you keep enforcing at home the idea that girls can be anything they want to be, let her have the cat. It can be hard enough to fit in at school. I wouldn't force a 6 year old to do it if she hasn't been convinced so far. It isn't like she gave it up completely... she still knows who she is... she just doesn't want to share it with people who will tease her and not understand... I understand that.

Why can't a girl be a jedi!? I am pretty sure there are lots of girls who dress up as jedis! Look it up on the internet and show her, I think there will be lots of photos

A choice of either Jedi or cat on Halloween is probably a good idea. I'm taking it none of the kids at school ever watched the Clone Wars cartoons. I remember there being a number a female Jedi and padawan (good and evil) including Anakin's padawan. I could never bring myself to watch the last two movies with Anakin so I don't know if there were any female Jedi in it.
There were a lot of female force users in the fiction so she has a lot of choices. If they are actual Jedi, most of the time they seem to wear the same outfit that Obi-Wan wears so you probably don't have to buy anything new. If she wants to be Mara Jade, she could pretty much wear anything she likes. Is your DD, by chance, a redhead?
If you go to Wookieepedia, she can probably even find a character to claim to be if she feels the need to defend her choice.
As a sidenote, Spell Check gave me trouble for typing jedi, not Jedi

Have her wear the princess leiagold bikini costume.
And then sign her up for Toddlers and Tiaras.
Problem solved.
New problems created.
You're welcome.

Introduce her to the Ventriss character. She is one badass StarWars lady. DS actually prefers to dress up as Ventriss at home because she has so many cool moves. Also, Luke's Padawan is female - don't remember her name right now but she kicks a lot of butt too.
That said, if your kiddo wants to be a kitty I would let her. Even six year olds can be cruel if they know they can get to her.

I like the idea of choices as well. Maybe she'll be a cat at school, but still dress up like a jedi for trick or treating. The cat costume can be accomplished with ears, a tail, and face paint, so it wouldn't be much of an outlay of cash.

We'll have another heart to heart tonight and I'll propose some of the ideas here. I don't get the idea that it is Jedis in particular that her friends scorn, but Star Wars costumes in general. Her friends are going to be things like My Little Pony and Strawberry Shortcake. Last winter I couldn't get her to wear her coat because someone commented that she looked like a snowman in it. I want DD to be confident in her own self, but I realize that I can't exactly force it. If I can't persuade her, I'll back off or maybe do a combo solution like the pp said.

It totally worked! She's going to be Adi Gallia. www.giantbomb.com/adi-gallia/94-6397/I'm so happy because in talking with her it was so apparent that she wanted to be a Jedi but didn't feel brave enough to stand up to her classmates. Finding the female character was the perfect solution. She was so excited to be a Jedi after all she just kept kissing me over and over again. Then she spent ten minutes showing me how she's now added a cartwheel and kick jump to her Jedi warrior moves. Thanks everyone for your help!

I would let her be what she wants to be. If she wants to be a cat, why not? She's just a kid. Let them have good memories and not memories of feeling embarrassed or whatever. She changed her mind. It is a girl's prerogative .

You need to talk about her choice of friends.

My nieces, ages 3 and 5, are going to be Captain America and the Incredible Hulk. The big green Smash Fists came in the mail today, and the older one was totally stoked. I'm mad because this version doesn't make the cool sounds.
They were set on being Rainbow Dash and the girl from Brave before they got the Avengers DVD.
