Welcome to the Boards andreawick! Sorry, Swamp, I got nothing for you on this. I sucked at skating and am not really looking forward to that stage of parenting...

Sorry, another hit-and-run post. But I had to tell Stubikky that I was in the figure skating club at that rink! MANY moons ago lol.

I liked to figure skate when i was younger. Not competively of course, but it can be fun if she's just learning how and then can practice by herself when she's older. And learning how to properly fall on your ass is never a bad skill to have. This is true!

Can't you rent skates until you know this is a real commitment?

Swamp I don't remember how old your DD is but you need to lace those skates up tight. If you buy them second-hand they may have "adjusted" and molded to somebody else's feet. Dunno, just something to think about. Beginner skates are not very expensive. Better figure skating skates are very pricey, plus you buy the boots and the blades separately. If your DD does stick with it, you might consider buying used blades and new boots (later on, I don't mean to start with). Or, if you buy used skates or boots, try to find something that has been barely worn. Hope this helps.

She's 4, almost 5, but about the size of you average 8 to 10 year old
She's still working on the basics of skating, like standing up. Once she gets the hang of skating, I'll buy her new.

At that age used will be fine. They were probably only worn a few times anyway. So, just something to keep in mind for later, if she gets hooked LOL. I am a declutter demon, but I still have my figure skates, even though they haven't fit for decades. Those darn kids that made my feet bigger LOL.

I got rid of my figure skates because my kids made my feet go from a 8 to a 9. I also lost cleats, ski boots, workboots, rollerblades, golf shoes, and my entire shoe wardrobe.
I bought some hockey skates so I can skate with my kids.

I keep wanting to buy new skates every time I'm in the US but they are heavy and inevitably it gets pushed off till the next trip.
My kids made my feet go from 7 to 8 but I still have my size 7 figure skates LOL.
I lost a lot of ski equipment too, but that was more because of the divorce than the change in shoe size LOL.

Swamp my BFF in CT became a "hockey mom" and ended up on a mom's hockey team. Just saying. ;-)
ETA: Wait till your kids grow up a bit, you'll get your rollerblades back. ;-)

I would love to play, but the closest mom team is an hour drive.

Awww sorry Swamp. My BFF HATED the idea but really loved it once she started.
Since we all know you have nothing to do, what about starting one that is more local? Maybe the moms an hour away actually live closer to where you live, and other moms would join?
ETA: You will eventually save money on workboots too LOL.

Ice time is a problem. The "old timers" men's league (which is guys I went to HS with) have practice/games at 10 pm. We'd either have 11 pm or 5 am. I don't want to play that bad

I don't blame you LOL. There is no way I could do those hours.
But isn't there something at your DD's rink? I'm guessing you're not shlepping her an hour away.
I used to skate three times a week at 6 am. My dad has been gone for about 12 years now, but once again, I'm remembering how wonderful my dad was, taking me there at that hour for all those years. <3
