I found somebody's ID last night. I searched for the name on FB and thanks to the picture, I am pretty confident I found the person's page. I was tempted to post "I found your ID, I am leaving it at the lost and found". DW pointed out that for a man to post on a college age woman's page could be creepy and stalkerish.
If you saw a post on your wall from a stranger, alerting you to where something you lost had been found, would you be grateful or creeped out?

There is nothing stalkerish in leaving it at the lost and found. It would be creepy if you wanted to meet her to return it.

I would be thankful no matter who it was. Hate to have to replace my id.

I don't think it's stalkerish.

Why not turn it into the local police station? That wouldn't be creepy or stalkerish.

Oh, I read too fast the first time - if it is a college ID, turn or mail it back to the college. I would just let them contact her.

Is the address on the ID? Hiding in their bushes is stalkerish. Mailing it to them with an email (notifying them of your intentions on FB) is helpful. But I agree with having your wife handle it if you are worried about it.

Dang, that would have been smart. If I still had the persons name, I could call the registrar or something and alert them as a second measure. As it is, I turned it in to the lost and found. I suppose I could call the place back and see if they will contact the college.
There was no option to private message, and not even to start a new post. As a non-friend, the best I could have done was made a comment on one of her posts.

How attractive was she? Stalkerishness is directly related to her physical beauty. Hot girl...you're a stalker who obviously wants to kidnap her. Ugly chick...you're such a nice guy.

She was alright, but it was a community college. I forget whether that means she is a frugal genius who will be rich, or whether her resume will always be passed over in favor of higher ranked schools.

I don't think it would be the least bit stalker-ish to let her know it was turned into the Lost and Found. Asking her to meet you somewhere would be totally creepy. But turning it in to her school or the police and letting her know it's there is helpful.

When I lost my knapsack (with my life inside) in CA this summer I checked my FB page constantly (I'm not generally active on FB, I only use it to stalk my adult kids LOL.) I was desperately hoping that somebody would contact me on FB to tell me they found my bag!
It would only be acting like a "stalker" if you told her you'd only return her ID if you could meet her in a dark alley after dark. Otherwise, it would be SO helpful! And as others have said, you could always have your DW write to her instead.
But there's something I don't get. I thought if you want to write somebody you're not friends with on FB, you have the option of either "sending them a friend request" or "sending them a private message". I hoped for a "private message" (to no avail, alas).
I KNOW you can send a private message to somebody you are not "friends" with because I did it recently, I wrote to DS2's BF when DS2 told me I had his flight info and I didn't.
But maybe it has to do with one's privacy settings? Dunno.

DH found two driver's licenses while jogging. Apparently a thief broke into cars at the local church, rummaged through wallets and purses, then tossed ID.
I found the phone numbers of both people online and called them and offered to have them pick up the ID at our office or I would mail it to them.
1 lady responded by sending me a thank you note and a Starbuck's gift card.
1 guy responded by calling our office repeatedly and asking me for information about my home address, the type of business we are in, our website address, our home phone number, DH's jogging routes, etc...When I asked him if he thought we broke into his car, stole his wallet and then called him to return the ID, he said yes. I suggested that he call the police to share his logic with them.

Oh, wow, Susanb, that reminds me of the old adage, "No good deed goes unpunished." I hope you just mailed the DL to him so you wouldn't have to deal with him anymore. Ungrateful wretch!

Fortunately, the woman was super cool. In the guys defense....He was an older gentleman who likely felt powerless and maybe even a little paranoid after being robbed. I think WWBG should err on the side of caution - having DW facebook is a good idea. If she lost the ID, she would probably just be grateful. If she was robbed, her response might be influenced by that.

Drop the ID off if you are close enough to and allow staff to handle the matter, or just drop the ID into a mailbox.. The post office usually makes sure it's delivered properly.. The person the ID belongs to will have no idea who found the ID..
