Ombud- Yes it is harder anytime there is a holiday involved. Just remember how much candy everyone ends up after trick or treating and how much you end up eating! Please tell me that ain't so!! I think I'm up. And since I still work 1 meeting a week for WW [and will continue to do so to get the ATT Cell Phone discount on all 3 lines], it'll cost me $$ if I do go up anymore! Gotta find a real job so I can stop stressing over every little pound. Anyone hear from Honeylioness?? How do you handle Holidays? Prepay cards to shop with, cash envelope, coupons? Looking for a way to keep it all at or under $500 this year despite having 2 more to buy for

Just bought Christmas gifts for our niece and nephew. Total came to $58, I used a gift card (yeah, a gift card I got at my shower but in the end it means other money can go to babies), and only paid $15 out of pocket. Not bad considering I'd given us a $50 budget per kid, but I decided to pull back a bit. They won't know how much is spent, they are very young, and I know SIL won't want us spending more just to add more crap to her house. Trying to keep it simple. And I made the executive decision that we aren't buying gifts for the other kids on DH's side (his cousin's kids) as we are not seeing them this year and it would involve his parents bringing everything to the family party. I might make little Christmas candy goodie bags for them instead, much cheaper. So instead of spending $60 on those four kids, it'll be maybe $10. Woo.

Well today was definitely not a no spend day! I'm not really tracking this month but I am thinking about it day to day.
I booked 3 more nights in New York for the upcoming trip with Blue Eyes, we already had a hotel for 2 nights done. Whew, the plan is coming together!
So much to do before I leave town, especially since I signed 3 new clients before lunch today! So excited for them to get started when I get home from my New York trip.

Update: 7 NSDs and 2 CSD
Glad to have time to check in with you. Looks as if all are doing relatively well. I am still buried under projects but am making headway toward the end of the second group. First stack is finished (except for those turning things in late). Third group won't be due for a while as of yet.
Also on a personal note I have my first craft show this weekend (I only schedule two) so I have been trying to squeeze out a few new necklace sets and/or earrings before Friday.
One of the two late nights at school is over. Another one is next week. Yesterday was a twelve hour day and in three hours I saw over the parents of over two dozen students in addition to the usual ten or more emails I get on a regular basis. Another meeting is scheduled for tomorrow morning as well as one later in the month.
I'm in for cards again. Not sure about Secret Santa.

Update: 8/20 NSD 3cats- you can count me in on the cards again this year. Not sure yet if I want to do Secret Santa- trying to simplify the holidays this year. Pretty quiet day yesterday. Work was steady but stress-free. At home I made dinner and then we installed the new bookshelves that I built on Sunday. We have some much more room for more books! AHHH. Have to keep myself in check and remind myself that open shelves on the bookcase do not need to be filled ASAP Should be a pretty quiet rest of this week. Friday will be a spend- my BFF is having another Thirty-One party at her house. I am a sucker for those damn bags but they are so sturdy and practical. Fortunately, my list of wants/needs is pretty small now so I should only order one or two items. Saturday is supposed to be cold and rainy here and the boys will head down to the Den (Dork Den is where they play war machines with their buddies) and on Sunday they have a tournament in Rochester so they'll be gone all day. That will work out perfect because I'll be able to work on some things for DH's surprise 40th bday party that's next Saturday (Oct 20).

Yesterday was a spend. Woot had a good deal on a compost booster, which is supposed to help the compost not smell so much. Since we just installed a solar composter I needed to get some anyway and it was a good price for a well reviewed product. Then since I was getting free shipping on anything else, I got mini-D an electric glowstick. Looks like a glow stick but runs off batteries. DH got the last 2 posts in for the dog run last night!!! ;D Now I feel like we are in a good position to finish it on Saturday, we just have to hang the fence between those to posts and install the gate. Then we have some cosmetic work to do but it will be functional!!!! On the down side DH discovered that the freezer door was open just a crack on our upright freezer. Most stuff was still frozen solid, but everything in the top shelf of the door was defrosted, so we had to throw away a few packages of frozen veggies, a ham and some chicken bones I was saving for broth. At least it wasn't everything in the freezer as I had stocked up over the weekend. And our composter is going to get a workout. It says it can handle up to a gallon of food (including meat and bones) every 2 days. So all the spoiled food went into it. If anyone is interested here is what we have solarcone.net/home/index.phpMoney- Hopefully the end of the projects is in sight for you. Shelia- I'm thinking once we get the books out of boxes and on to the shelves that DH is going to have to build some more shelves. I haven't heard of Thrity one, I'm off to google it. Start- Enjoy your time with Blue-eyes. Just curious is this a romantic or professional relationship?? I'm being nosy, you can tell me to MYOB. Ombud- We wing it on gifts. During the move a few things that I had bought for people years ago resurfaced, so I have a few presents there. I think 3cats has a pretty good system for saving for the holidays if I remember correctly. I think she buys gift cards every pay period and then uses them to buy presents later. Red- As the kids get older you will appreciate it when people don't give you kids more junk for the house. Honestly I can't think of a single thing mini-D needs or even really wants. He has so many toys and plays with such a small number that it seems wasteful to me to have people give him anymore. I think I may just start pulling toys out of his play room and see if he misses them. Stick them in the attic for 6 months, then just get rid of them. He actually did pick out toys to give away when we were packing, but he still has more than he needs. My DB & SIL are trying to convince my niece who will be 11 that for her birthday next month she should ask everyone to bring a book to donate to Ready to Read program. They just got back from a week at Disney and each kid got too much stuff.

Dakota- Thirty-One is the latest in the home parties crowd. This is purses, bags, suitcases, storage totes etc. I have a lot of the bags. Between my BFF, myself, my sister and my mom I think we have nearly one of everything. It's been my experience that the bags are really pretty well made and very easy to clean. Some are throw in the wash and some are made of a slick type fabric that is easy to wipe down with a wet cloth. If you ever get invited to a party I recommend going. The thermal tote (lunch bag) is the best. The organizing utility tote is pretty slick for outings with the kids and we use the large tote for moving the laundry around, going to the grocery store, flea markets, the big book sale this last weekend, etc. Warning- they are kind of addicting. See my comment on having nearly one of everything. Red- we have been trying to switch more to "experiences" than toys with some of the nieces and nephews. A GC for tickets to the movies, the zoo, etc. They seem to enjoy that more than yet another toy. DS used to get so overwhelmed with the volume of toys that he'd get at Christmas. We used to hide some of them and bring them out 6-7 months later as a surprise. Dakota- I love that idea for your niece! That's genius.

Dakota - yeah my SIL has a one-gift rule. Anything more stays at the givers house. I think I will use this rule too. Unless it's like a set of books or something like that. I think I will transition to giving our niece books next year as she learns to read better. Books are small and I love sharing my favorites with others. We definitely don't have room for a ton of toys in our house, as we barely have room for their diapers. As it is we'll probably be shopping weekly for diapers because even Costco sized boxes will go quickly. Part of me can't wait to start looking into selling this house/buying a new one, but part of me will be sad to leave it (blue proposed here!). But we'll really need the storage space, as currently we have basically none.

sheila- A lot of the Celebrating Home designers use Thirty-One bags to carry their products.
Sorry I haven't been around- still nursing this leg. The x-rays came back today and the doctor's office had just gotten them 10 minutes before lunch.
I will have the totals up by tomorrow for the two weeks.
I also will post a short QOTW.

QOTW- Do you use technology to your advantage when budgeting and controlling spending- or do you eschew technology for old school methods?
COTW- Discuss one way that technology can or has helped or hindered your budgeting or controlling spending. Also, how do old school methods help you.

Red- I know how you feel. I had mixed emotions about leaving our old house, it was where DH proposed, where mini-D called home for 4 years, where we became a family. But we needed more space and as sad as I was to leave, I'm loving the space and we will make new traditions in the new house. I'm really excited about holiday decorating as we have an entry way and bannisters and vaulted ceiling in the living room.

QOTW- I use an excel spreadsheet for tracking, budgeting and forecasting. I have used paper and pencil before but I like that my formulas will adjust and that my numbers adjust accordingly.
COTW- I use the "notes" app on my smart-phone to make my lists. It allows me to keep multiple lists going at once so I don't have to have a bunch of scraps of paper in my purse. I keep a list of groceries, meal plans, books I'm looking forward, sizes and dimensions of different things in my house that I need (furnace filters, etc). It has saved me from buying the wrong sizes, duplicate books, etc. I also keep a list of everyone's clothing sizes, Christmas wish lists, etc. I guess I'm from an adaptable generation- I've pretty much stopped using most of the old school methods that I used to use. It's how I was raised- my dad was a huge proponent of computers when they first came out and was one of the first in his industry to go automated and computerized. They used to fly people from all over the country to look at his systems because they were so revolutionary and usually the first one sold by the manufacturer. So I've learned to embrace new technology and grow with it.

QOTW- I use Mint pretty much exclusively for financial tracking now. I do occasionally export to Excel for analysis beyond what the website can do and to have a copy of our data on hand. COTW- I too use the notes on my smart phone to keep lists of things. (Though I need to remember to look up the size of our furnace filter when I get home and add it.) It is so nice not to have to dig through my purse for those lists. I also use the Amazon app to check prices when I'm out shopping. I'm always happy to find a way to make saving/tracking easier. Ways it has hindered is the barrage of e-mails to buy something from stores. I have been making a concerted effort to unsubscribe from the companies I'm not that interested in. But if I didn't get those e-mails I'd never know I wanted something

Just popping in to say hi! I haven't been tracking (though I really need to) because I've been so busy with work and the girls. DD1 is all out of diapers now!! And DD2 just started daycare 1 morning a week. I'm also having a huge issue with my employer trying to get my taxes settled. I work online and they're trying to say that I have to pay taxes for the state I live in plus the state my online division is based on. Given that I've been working with them for over 3 years and never had this issue (it only started after I moved) I think they're nuts. Regardless though, I am getting really, really annoyed that they can't get their act together.
Hope everybody is doing well!

Need to return and exchange some clothes at the mall today. May end up being a small spend. I did finally wash my car (which was filthy), mow the lawns, clean out the gutters, and trim the roses. Now I'm tired and settling in for a few more hours of calls and then working on the new website Start- Enjoy your time with Blue-eyes. Just curious is this a romantic or professional relationship?? I'm being nosy, you can tell me to MYOB. dakota - ask me in a week This trip to NY is the third trip in 6 months we've done together. Some big, life changing stuff came up in Florida last month that we haven't had time to talk about yet because it's not exactly a Skype/phone conversation to have. Mostly I need to survive Sunday, I've already been crying today thinking about it (usual birthday angst + missing my cousin = rough day). Been listening to my cousin's soundtrack and then I made the mistake of looking at some pictures and cried all over again. So for Sunday the plan is distraction. We plan to take the train to the city, see the statue of liberty, ground zero, broadway, wall street and then once it gets dark take the late trip to the top of the Empire State Building. Then dinner, train into Connecticut and meet up with our mastermind group. Somewhere in there I'll probably have a crying breakdown but Blue Eyes is well aware of how hard it's going to be for me so I'm glad to have him with me.

QOTW- I know how to use the programs- or at least part of them- and don't.
COTW- Especially now that i have the new computer, I have the smartphone, etc- I need to at least by the first of the year have the electronic stuff in place. I had been using the list app on the dumb phone and I have the ability to use android apps on this one.

dakota - your new house sounds lovely! just the sort I hope we get when we move. I love holiday decorating!
QOTW: I use excel to budget and track expenses, and I use Mint to kind of double-check myself, but I still find it off sometimes when I am transfering between accounts. It counts it as a spend when I'm just moving it, etc.
I just heard about a great app called Wunderlist that you can sync with someone else (like DH) to keep track of grocery lists, to do's, etc. I haven't gotten into it yet but it looks like just what we need.
sbcali - I know when I worked in one state and lived in another, I had to pay taxes in both. It sucked.
startsmart - hugs. I hope you manage to have a good weekend despite the tears. Sounds like you have a good plan for Sunday!
My weekend will involve sleeping, having some gal pals over Saturday night while Blue is off being "man showered" by his buddies, and painting shelving. Oh, and more sleep. It's been a long week.

If I can keep this up, I'll be able to eat out the last 5 days of the month. But then, that may trigger a new habit of eating out. I guess I will just eat out tomorrow after work and maybe Sunday at my favorite restaruant. They have the best liver and onions ever. Sunday is startssmart's birthday.

I had a NSD today compliments of MommaBear- ZBear came to visit and MommaBear kicked us out and handed us cash and told us to go eat wherever we wanted as long as we brought her back Benadryl, Aquaphor, a bacon cheeseburger, and some more Dr. Pepper. We had Peking Duck and a flaming bo-bo platter

sbcali - I know when I worked in one state and lived in another, I had to pay taxes in both. It sucked. Yeah, I totally understand if I worked in another state I'd have to pay (which I agree would suck) but I don't. I live AND work in NM, it is just that I work virtually and the office is based in MA. It seems like they got it worked out though and I should see the back taxes that were taken out incorrectly on my next paycheck. In theory, I should only have one state (NM) taken out too. I'm not really holding my breath though since these payroll people don't really seem too on the ball.

State taxes: When I worked in Payroll, we had employees on jobs in multiple states. My understanding of it was that they were supposed to file in the multiple states, then use what they paid to the outside states as a credit against their home state taxes. I never had to do it personally, though, so I don't know more specifics than that. Anyway, I had a pretty quiet weekend, spending-wise. We got a fair bit of rain on Saturday, which helps, as I have no desire to go out when it's all dreary like that. I stayed home and watched a netflix movie instead. Rocky Mtn. Saver: 5 NSD/5 CSD (<$5).

COTW- Discuss one way that technology can or has helped or hindered your budgeting or controlling spending. Also, how do old school methods help you. I don't have a smartphone or anything special, but I do use Excel to do my budgeting and tracking. I'm an Excel nerd, so a good spreadsheet actually brings me joy! I have a master financial spreadsheet with something like 9 tabs. I like to tweak it and update it, make projections, set goals, etc. Having it all written out for me in one place helps me keep track of everything better. I track my convenience credit card there, updating it several times a week, which has been invaluable in not falling back into bad spending habits. I'm partially old-school, though, in that I use envelopes for my spending cash. The combination of cash envelopes and Excel for my big-picture stuff has worked great for me for 4-5 years.

Only 1 NS day this weekend. Had a nice low key weekend and got a lot accomplished. Went out to eat both Friday and Sunday. Saturday was a rainy day, but we got a ton done. DH got a start on setting up his shop in the basement and I got the pictures and decor all unboxed and started deciding where they are going to go. On Sunday mini-D had a birthday party and we all went and hung out at the park and chatted with the other parents. Then when we got home DH finished the dog run. The dogs are not amused that they no longer have full run of the backyard.
SBcali- It shouldn't matter what state the company is based in, just where you work and live. I work in a different state than I live and I pay taxes to the state I work in and get a credit for those on the state I live in. It is pain and usually end up getting a refund from the state I work in and owe the state I live in. It ends up being a wash for me usually.

Update; 9/20 NSD Pretty mellow weekend. Friday I went to my BFF's for her Thirty-One party. So much fun- meet a friend of her's from High School and was all "I like you, we should hang out" so she is coming back up (lives 45 minutes away) on Saturday to come to DH's surprise b-day party. Stuck to my list and only bought what was on it, including the Christmas present for my niece (plus it was on sale- SCORE) Saturday while DH worked I ran around and did some errands for his party this weekend. I had copies made of a ton of pictures so I could put them on foam core as decorations at the party. Sunday the boys went to a tournament in Rochester- they left at 9:30 am and got back at 7:45 pm. Had the whole house to myself- super peaceful. Glued the pics on to the foam core, did all the laundry, cleaned the house, etc. Which brings us to today- man I did not want to get out of bed this morning! So sleepy. But the good news is I don't have anything planned that will require me to spend money! Woot Woot. DS has Youth in Govt tonight so I'll have to run him down for that but I've already paid for it. DH will likely go to the Den to hang out with his buddies while DS is at his meeting. Made a ham yesterday so we have Ham based meals planned for the first half of the week. Should be a pretty mellow week- fingers crossed anyway.

Just popping in real quick to say HI!!! and share some exciting news (for those of you who aren't on facebook)
First - I have a fabulous new job working in an office doing incoming sales (phone calls, no I'm not a telemarketer, they're calling me). I can't even begin to describe how positive the company culture is and how huge of an impact it has on my life. It's amazing. I'm still wrapping my head around it.
Second - With leaving the fabric store, I had to make a decision on what to do with my 401K. While I could have rolled it to my new employer's 401K plan, I spent a lot of time thinking about my options and ultimately decided to take the payout. excuse me for a second while I duck the tomatoes being thrown at me. Now, I fully understand the pitfalls of this decision. But I made the choice so that I could start this new phase in my life on a more immediately firm financial footing. I used the money to pay off the "short term" loan that I've been re-financing every couple of months for the last 6-ish years. I also paid off the payday advance I had taken out at my credit union, stashed $500 in savings, made sure that every single one of my monthly bills were current and replaced a big chunk of my wardrobe. I realized that while having that money in my 401K was all well and good, it didn't do me any good if I was constantly worried about whether or not I had enough gas money after paying all of my bills. I have a strategy to replace the money over the next year, so don't be too mad at me.
Third - I replaced my car, which had been having more and more problems as time went on. I do have to commute a significant distance to my new job, and I couldn't risk breaking down on my way to work. I went to a salesperson that I know and trust outside of work, and purchased a modest car for $6k at an interest rate that makes me want to puke. But it's reliable, and I can make twice the payments each month and have it paid off in just over a year.
So all in all, positive things are happening in my life. I've had to make some hard decisions in the last couple of weeks, and I've made choices that I'm not entirely happy with, but I'm at peace with that. And now that I'm sitting at a desk, in front of a computer all day, I'll try to be more involved.

Stand back. I have a budget, and I know how to use it.

When I lived in one state and worked in the other, I filed taxes for both. I got a full refund from one and applied it to my home state's taxes.
QOTW- Do you have difficulty controlling spending on projects? Or do you have a "weak spot" for certain projects that causes a leak in your budget?
COTW- If not, share how you keep project spending under control. If so, identify these areas and start forming a plan to plug the leaks.
