My ex-MIL has an antique and collectible store. The stuff you are talking about sells very well. That's not to be confused with what your mom may have paid for it if she is really a collector. If she is willing to consign it, try that route. You may have to search out where the antique stores are in your state, though, and make a day trip out of it.
I have a lot of "antiques" because I used to work at the store with her. Antiques is a word that is often used loosely. I think a lot of my stuff was really late Victorian and early 20th century, which didn't really become antiques until lately. A lot of stuff really falls into the category of collectible.
I like my older furniture. It suits my traditional style and values. But then everyone in our family has a house filled with this stuff because we all got it from her. So it's what we are all used to.

Do you buy or invest in antiques? My mom has purchased alot of antique items. Mostly brilliant cut glass, carnival glass, knick knacks and such. However, my sis and i have different tastes and we really do not want tons of glassware, china, etc. Mom has talked about selling some of her pieces on consignment. She has signed pieces of signature glass. But we live in mostly a depressed rural area and I doubt there would be much market for this kind of thing at auction. And, I don't find that the upcoming generation will be all that interested in those kinds of things. Discuss your experiences, opinions, and values of antiques. I am 32 and very much into antiques. I have some glassware, old glass lamps and what not, but I mostly go for tins, marbles, old toys, bottles with labels, kitchen utensils, spice tins, cookbooks, and what not. I decorate my house with everything I have. I do not invest a lot of money, I try to pick up cheaper items at yardsales.

We're third generation owner of a lot of our furniture; much of it coming from DH's grandmother who had the furniture special built for her home. It's unlikely that we would have spent the money to get the kind of quality we have.
I am an occasional purchaser of china and glass, looking for replacement/complementary items to what we already own. I've bought off of e-bay; the sellers are from all over the country. I'd try to find a shop that would help your mom with marketing and shipping her stuff.

She has many pieces of American brilliant cut glass. Signed Hawkes and other pieces. We have some in storage containers because she has so many. She has many really good quality pieces but her primary collection consists of that. I have a signed Waterford and blown glass pieces of old Corning, Hoare, Fenton, Dorflinger, etc. Snerdley-has anyone in your family researched on-line to see what pieces similar to your mom's might be selling for today?

Snerdley,
I have no idea if your mom's stuff has any real value or not. I have heard that ebay killed the "collectables" market. I had some friends who used to dabble in collectables, and they had a booth at a flea market where the management took everything on consignment. Prior to ebay, prices were higher. There was a perception that the collectables were rarer than they actually were. Once ebay put the goods on the internet, and buyers found they could buy the "rare collectables" every day, the net price plummeted to the seller. This, I was told by a Disney collector.
Your mother's items may indeed be rare, and thus valuable. I'd first check ebay, and see what they're selling for there, and if that doesn't work, check with major dealers.
