Maybe this is how I can look at it!?? it's not throwing money into the trash! I did get my use out of my electronics and now it's just time to upgrade. Recycle Center my Panasonic 27 inch big box TV that I've had for at least 10 years everything works not one problem Plastic Recycle my Panasonic VCR, and everything works Plastic Recycle my Panasonic 5 disc DVD player I've had for 7 years and everything about it works Plastic Recycle my PS2 I've had for 7 years and everything works on this as well Plastic Recycle my Aiwa (think they are out of business) 3 CD, duel cassette mini shelf 5 speaker AM/FM radio system, everything works on this as well and last trash the entertainment center that holds all this together. don't see me selling any of it and charities do not want this stuff. I already purchased a 40 inch Sony LCD HD 120 Hz 1080p TV. Then replace the DVD player and PS2 with a PS3. oh which reminds me all my games have to go as well because the PS3 doesn't play older games. Then replace the Aiwa with a Sony sound bar Then replace the entertainment center. 2 now 3 years ago we were SUPPOSED to have moved into a bigger apartment. all this now trash was going in the spare room. But my chick is broke, then got fired, and is in bigger debt. so we ain't move'n no where! and no where soon! I don't want to throw this stuff away and I want new stuff! if it was $40 or $50 tops per month I put it all in storage. But the smallest storage in my area is $130 PER MONTH! fuck that! so I'm thinking I got my use out of it and yes everything works but I just trash it all and upgrade.

Boy. Problems. But not any we can fix, I'm afraid - seek counseling. Too much STUFF is your problem. Yuck.

Just a suggestion - keep the PS2and your favorite games with it. My hubby has nostalgic days when he goes back and just play his favs. Priceless!

I'm laughing because we have a big tv in the office, and my husband wants to it so bad. I can't come up with a reason that is a good idea. I actually think a flat tv will fit worse in here, because the TV sits on our stack. It would gain us nothing - except a better tv.

In this day and age, you have to look at lots of stuff as simply "disposable" Meaning, you buy it, use it for your pleasure, when you no longer enjoy it or want it, you give it to Goodwill. It is gone. Any money you spend on disposables is simply that, money spent. Some people are good at selling things. I hate to sell stuff and i am not going to be bothered with that. So, in a box and out the door, goodbye. I used it and enjoyed it and that's it. You have to just learn to part with stuff you are never going to use again anyway.
My thoughts exactly!

Same here. We have an enormous (about 48") TV that is over 6 years old. DH is waiting for it to die before he replaces it. I keep telling him - "if you want a new one (he does) just get it". But he won't replace it until the current one dies. I've told him that if he still has it when he dies, I'm gonna bury it with him!

One of the reasons why I am not broke is that I reside in a very small apartment and do not have room to put dozens of electronic gadgets and such. The extent of my electronic possessions are my desktop PC, which I really do need for work/career, and a small 15" screen TV, that is not a flat panel.

Don't think of it as tossing perfectly fine electronics. Think of it as you doing your part to spur on the economy!

Just a suggestion - keep the PS2and your favorite games with it. My hubby has nostalgic days when he goes back and just play his favs. Priceless! I still have my original NES. Sometimes a good Friday night is spent with a pizza, a bottle of wine, and some Bubble Bobble. We just recently took all our old electronics to our nearest recycling center. It feels good to get rid of them, especially since I had some dead items that traveled from apartment to apartment! This is a recycling center that operates on donations, so I gladly gave up some cash to rid myself of clutter and keep this awesome place open. In December I put out a chair and vanity table by the garbage, I came back outside an hour later and both were gone. yay! We just bought a 32" LCD tv to replace our 25" tv. The old tv works perfectly well, so we keep it in our storage unit in the basement, for just in case purposes.

Bubble Bobble is seriously the best Nintendo game ever made, and I still play it with my best friend (cause you need both dinosaurs to win). I that you can't pause the game and return later... you have to write down the code for the level you're on (which you won't ever remember to do if you're also drinking), so you pretty much have to ignore everything around you for 3+ hrs at a time. And we have to tiptoe past the NES, because if you rattle it, it'll reset itself./

Up until 5 years ago, I had my 25" tube tv with a VCR to record shows that aired when I wasn't home. I had to upgrade finally when my one blank video tape got so re-recorded over that it would hardly play, and I discovered that drug stores had stopped selling blank video cassette tapes.

That's lots of stuff! If I was nearby I'd take the PS2. My TV is about 20 years old but I'm OK with that. If you aren't going to use the stuff I'd give it away for free instead of spending any money on keeping it. Join your local freecycle and start listing stuff. The only thing you might get money for is the PS2 since some people feel the PS2 especially certain ones are superior to the PS3. You can also use the free section of craigslist. I've got rid of some things that way.

Check with your local house of worship. A lot of churches have "teen centers" where the kids hang out after school. They'd probably appreciate your items, since they're all working (and no, my kids don't own the latest technology out there--they'd enjoy those items too!)

Seriously, dont let your STUFF own YOU.

I don't like clutter any more than the next guy, but I would not throw the stuff away if it works. Last fall, we had an "Everything's $1" yard sale. Shoppers didn't believe that I was selling a microwave and TV that worked for $1, among other things. Boy did they walk to the car quickly once they passed me that single!

I think the decision to buy more stuff when your current stuff works is dumb. Straight-up stupid.
You mentioned that your gf has no work and you guys seem to be freaking. That suggests that your financial situation is not one of independence/freedom and could be improved upon. This is definitely my sitch, and I see no reason to upgrade our big ass (read: NOT flat screen) tv, etc. I would prefer to get to the point where I choose to upgrade and it meant nothing to me.
So, no dice. You have thrown away money and like the other guy said, I also see poverty in your future.

And, it isn't throwing money away. If you view things like that you will never get rid of anything. We "throw money away" all the time. When you eat out, you are throwing money away, when you travel, you are throwing money away. If you are using these things to enhance the overall quality of your life, you are not throwing away money. But, if you find you are buying much more stuff than you really enjoy, or buying things that are too upgraded with features you don't use then you are throwing money away. snerdley thanks for helping - Karma = 20!!

You only went to 40"? LOL. You may be able to find people on Craigslist to buy some of this stuff, my sister paid $100 for a 37" that someone was replacing with a flatscreen. And my friend paid $75 for a 27" flat panel with 'only two dead pixels.'
I have a problem with holding onto old electronics as well, I still possess my old Kenwood receiver, and I have four DVD/HD-DVD players when I only use my Blu-Ray one now. And I have the laptop graveyard too.
Maybe a donation to a senior center for some of it? The few times that things have been given to the local PAL, they have been stolen shortly after.

Geez, Hampton, doesn't Jersey have any electronic waste regulations? Plastic recycle is NOT the place for electronic waste. Craig's List 'em local only for 5 or 10 bucks each.
Hey! It's beer money.

The tax break I get from the donation is worth almost as much as I could sell the stuff for minus the trouble of having to do a garage sale and then lug what doesn't sell over to the Goodwill. Anyone who has enough stuff to get rid of to make a garage sale worthwhile has bought too much stuff they didn't need, much less be able to use. Oh geez, that sounds really judgemental, but I mean it in a nice way. When stuff needs to be replaced, replace it. Obviously, that comes with the caveat of whether you can afford it. Our stereo is 6 years old and I was lamenting the other day that it's quirks are indicating it's on its last legs. Probably time for us to enter the modern world and get an iPod like device. Again with the caveat that one isn't flat broke, sometimes you just have to replace things with new things.

I use Freecycle to get rid of my old stuff. Someone today was looking for a DVD player as their unit had died and I have one collecting dust. I know I wouldnt' use it because if my current DVD player died, I'd get one that would stream Netflix.
