I use protein powder to help rebuild my muscles after a long run or hard workout (though I haven't lifted in 2+ months).
I think it definitely helps. I did a 9 mile run on Friday (longest in 2 months) and I was very sore at the end. Immediately afterwards, I had a protein shake and felt no soreness within an hour. Chocolate milk is also recommended - right amount of protein/fat/carbs.
I do about .5 grams of protein per pound of body weight on non-running days, but on days I run, myfitnesspal recommends I do about .7 or .75. Not trying to build muscle though, so I bet 1 gram/lb or more is accurate.
Plus it helps me get protein without having to eat any more steak/chicken/fish/eggs.
I hate the taste of mine though, so don't buy a big tub of anything first - try a few and then figure out what you like. Mine isn't as bad with milk, but I still hold my breath while I chug down 10 oz so I don't have to taste it too much!
I think mine is Optimum Nutrition whey protein powder - Chocolate Malt. My DH likes the taste. Everyone is different though!

I should add the 1.5 number is total protein, so you don't have to get it all from powder.
