It's Monday, that means the phone won't stop ringing.
Today has been the "it's all about me" callers who insist that we stop everything they are doing and cater to them.
It's also been the "I need an attorney, but I can't afford the $50 consult fee, so why won't you see me for free" day. Sweetie, if you can't afford $50, why do you think you can afford to hire someone.
What's with the attitudes?

The TV tells me that lawyers are there to work for me and they don't get paid unless I win. So hop to it!

Seriously, tho. Our society is becoming more "me" oriented every day. Its a sense of entitlement that so many people seem to have. I don't want to pay so somebody should just give it to me. Our own fault.

How do you win a real estate transaction? Easier than winning having a will drawn up. ;D

It's everyones RIGHT to have an attorney. The police even tell you this when they're stuffing you into the back of the car.

Hmmm, when I hired an attorney, he charged $80 for a consult and $200 an hour after that. I think your prices are too low He ended up winning my case, so I figure he was worth every penny.

Some lawyers offer free consults. Perhaps they expected that you did too.

Can they go to legal aid for that type of service? I gotta say, there is something very wrong with the fact that people can get really screwed just bc they can't afford an adequate legal representation. Not much justice in that

Not much justice in that Lena Hmmm, I thought if you couldn't afford a lawyer and were in criminal trouble they would appoint a public defender to represent you. And for non criminal offenses, there are legal missions and lawyers who take on some gratis work. So you can probably still get legal representation, but it might take a lot longer for the overwhelmed public defenders and legal missions.

Well...I say those lawyers and/or accountants etc. who doesn't mind giving free consultation get paid better IMO. Before opening business we needed to register corp and one lady wouldn't talk to us except 'my time worth $90 per consultation'...all she was saying about..20 times... and we went ofcourse with one who explained it to us in details what we need to do and we paid HER and not the one with 'greedy teeth'. I gave her this nickname because when she was saying 'ninety dollars' - she clentched her teeth like nut job!

How do you win a real estate transaction? It depends if it is a regular sale or a short sale/foreclosure.

I love watching those cop shows, where some low-life prostitute or drug dealer gets stopped by the police and starts hollering, "I'm gunna call my lawyer!" Really? These people have lawyers on retainer or what? I supposed if business going extremelly well ...sure they have those lawyers on-call...and I am sure swamp wouldn't mind being on-call if money is right...but for poor shmucks? NO GO!!!

I often waive the consult fee once I've met with the person, but I don't advertise that I do it because then every whack job on the street wants one.

I like monetizing "rush" service. I'll see you right now for an additional $50 convenience fee.

Probably better in theory than in practice, Gowron.
You'll get last weekend's DUIs, but not the estate-planning people or RE people that booked their appt weeks or months ago.

Not IME. Decent reading/writing abilities, logic, a hefty dose of people skills, self-marketing, and the ability to do research seem to be key. Different proportions of each depending on the type of work environment. There are some pretty dumb but successful lawyers, and a whole lot of super-intelligent unsuccessful ones.

I meant in my experience, although IMO would also work Very interesting ranking... always an eye-opener to compare self-perception to how others see you. I'd actually put people skills and self-marketing at the bottom of my list. I have made OK progress on these, but neither come very naturally to me. I'm pretty good at research/writing but am definitely not the smartest person in the office, and logic sometimes escapes me .

The super intelligent unsuccessful lawyers probably suffer in part from low people skills/lack of self marketing skills. Lawyers are one of those occupations where trust is very important, and if you can't sell me on 'why you', it can be a big problem. Of course a good track record helps with that, so the other things would be important too , but I think self marketing people skills would be up there on the list...

I love watching those cop shows, where some low-life prostitute or drug dealer gets stopped by the police and starts hollering, "I'm gunna call my lawyer!" Really? These people have lawyers on retainer or what? Uh...actually....some of them do just that. They use the same scratch and sniff attorney to represent them whenever they're arrested. My roommate from college is an ADA in NYC. When she got out of law school, before she passed the bar, she worked for an attorney just like this. Actually, his son represented a big name mobster. But, a good portion of his "practice" was representing pros and dealers. Many of these were mid-level in their "industries" and actually could at least afford counsel that might have been one or two clicks above a PD. He actually made a good living doing this. My friend learned the basics of how to navigate these cases through the Manhattan court system.
