The nice thing, still, about being an American , is that we are free to vote with our feet. Don't like the way a state runs their state? You can move to a state that you do. We had a poster say that if their child was special needs, she'd head to NJ or NY because they fund better. There are states that I would never put my child in a public school because their emphasis is certainly not on educating their young. There are states that I will most certainly retire in. Different strokes for different folks. We aren't totally socialist, yet. We have the liberty to do so, but not always the means. One of the lessons of Hurricane Katrina was that for a huge chunk of our population, filling up the gas tank in a reliable car and driving to a new state isn't an option. If something is important, it isn't important everywhere but Mississippi. If something is a right, it shouldn't be a right for everyone except poor people.

Having these platforms for either party is a waste of time and money. Shame on both parties for pissing away money like this. Good point. The less that the Dems actually have in writing, the easier it is to squirm out of whatever the topic is. Or maybe it's less government involvement in our lives. Smaller government is what Republicans want and demand. Yet the written Republican platform is nearly twice in length the size of the Democratic platform.

And both platforms are utter and complete nonsense. Both parties will screw the taxpayers and do what's best for themselves.

The lesson from Katrina was to NOT rely on uncle sugar to take care of you. Uncle sugar created a mindset of dependency. When uncle sugar didn't come through, people paid the price. Those that knew uncle sugar wasn't going to do anything, lived. A lot of cities were demolished but we only hear about new Orleans. Why is that?

Those that knew uncle sugar wasn't going to do anything, lived. A lot of cities were demolished but we only hear about new Orleans. Why is that? So, your position is let the poor people drown? Um, we hear about New Orleans because it was the largest population center impacted by the hurricane. No other major city was damaged to that degree. Yes, many smaller communities were destroyed as well, but they were just that... smaller communities. And we hear about New Orleans because it was the epicenter of the government's bungling of the situation. I'm all for self-reliance, but in an emergency, your local community needs to be able to respond. Think about how long it takes to get from southern Florida to Georgia... or from northern Michigan to Ohio. It is not an insignificant undertaking.

They had days to get out and sat and waited. For Pete's sake, they could have WALKED by then to someplace safer. The lesson still hasn't been learned, either. It isn't just the poor, it's anyone with the mentality that thinks depending on the government is smart.
