Or does it even matter?
I've been purging paperwork... Came across some recognitions (scholastic awards), diplomas (including a phd) etc. About a dozen in all. They were my X's and we've been divorced since 1980. How on earth have I had them all this time over several moves and a marriage? I have no idea.
I thought maybe I should mail them to him. I'm pretty sure I have a correct address (the google search showed the year he got his phd and correct age).
Should I mail them because it's the right thing to do?
Or just chuck them since he hasn't had them since before 1980?
Or does it even matter?

Mail them. At one time the documents might have meant a little something to you too.

When I was around 12 or 13 and older friend who was a senior in high school broke up with her boyfriend who had given her his high school ring (class of 1966). She didn't want his ring anymore so she gave it to me because I like faceted red stones.
Fast forward to this summer. I came across the ring stored away all these years. I need to find out where this old friend from my childhood lives so I can return the ring to her and hopefully she in turn can return the ring to him or his surviving family member(s).

I'd mail them.
It will either make him think you are nice, or annoy him. Either way - win!

Mail them. It's the right thing to do, even if he is a douche.

Oh, he's not a douche. He was just the wrong person for me (at the time and still would be now). But a decent guy. (It was my first H who was a douche - violent and mentally ill)
I've just found him on facebook. He's remarried... and living in my area... go figure.
I'll mail them - and thanks.

Well I doubt that anyone missed the ring (not many care about class rings 5 years after high school), but if this was a guys rings from the 1960s, it is probably gold and worth quite a bit of money at all those "Sell your gold" places.

I lost my high school ring within a year of graduating. It didn't mean much really after school ended.
The ring I plan on returning probably won't mean much to the original owner, but his adult children may get a kick out of it especially if their dad is now deceased.

My class ring is from 1944. Mom gave it to me when I told her they were selling 1966 class rings. She said you don't want one you can have mine. I wonder if I should give it back to her.

You didn't mention children, but when I ran across some of my EX stuff a few years ago I gave them to my son to get to his dad. Funny how you can move a box of stuff around for 26 yrs and not even open it.

I suggest sending him a Facebook message and asking if he wants the stuff first. If he wants it, then you can mail it or drop it off somewhere.
