If you study the Bible you will realise that most of the practises of the Church, particularly the Roman Catholic church, are not 'christian' at all. Mostly rules made up by men. Pomp and ceremony to impress the poor.
'Transubstantiation' first promulgated around 140AD but not known by that name till around 1300/1400AD
Christ was fufilling the Jewish Passover. To tell the disciples to actually eat his body was unthinkable. No Jew would eat flesh until it was drained of blood and cooked, and certainly not human flesh. Neither would they drink blood. Neither would the early apostles, mainly Jews.
Note that it was the BLOOD of the lamb that actually saved the Hebrews at Exodus.
I am always amused by the 'confessional' and 'penances'. All a Christian has to do is to confess his/her sins TO GOD. True repentance and forgiveness do not depend on a priests interference and 'Hail Marys'.
Perhaps I've said enough. If you want to know Christianity, read what Christ says first.

The Catholic church has been through a number of reformations. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Martin Luther split from the church?
I spent many years looking into my faith. My conclusion was Christ was the first Catholic (but not the last Jew!). He most likely knew what he wanted. Mankind has distorted things through greed and less than stellar behavior, but in Christ's way of looking at it, (my opinion only) what He left behind should still be what He left behind. So many centuries and so much garbage, but it's still standing. I can't love my church on a whim. I either do or don't. I confess I was so disgusted by the pedophile behavior I stopped going to Mass for years. But, I was only hurting myself. It's God I believe in, not what man has distorted. It's my understanding that God is the same today as He always was. We change to fit our needs and desires. He stays the same.
I hope this helps with your question. Please understand this is what I have deduced. Personally.
