I need help please. Shares of a Fidelity mutual fund bought Sept 1997. Due to mergers, account has been automatically moved at least 3 times from one investment firm to another. Lost records. Need to sell before end of year. How to obtain cost basis? Can it be interpolated from online historical prices - how? Fidelity is not helpful at all because they never had the account Thank you kindly.

Thank you everyone for your responses. NO records at all - no statements, no tax return copies, did not use CPA/tax-preparer. Have moved residences - somehow some boxes lost in the moves. Yes- all dividends/distributions re-invested.
There is new law that requires 1099s include cost basis - when is this effective?
