Before bread, pasta, and white rice, people ate whole grains. It was still carbs but in a less refined way. Brown rice gives less of a spike in your sugar levels. I lost 30 lbs in one month on a low carb diet. It was not my plan. Doctor put me on it.

I have been following a primal way of eating for three years now. It was a slow transition as I gave up bread, pasta and processed foods. The key for me is that I eat a lot of fat. I do need to up my veggie intake, that has been slacking lately. It is vitally important that when on this you eat a lot of veggies. Mark has a lot of free information on his blog at marksdailyapple.com . He posts a recipe every Saturday and has initial start guides. It is a great resource for anyone who wants to try out low-carb/paleo. And Sarcastic is right, it is not temporary, it is a lifestyle change. It is very difficult for me to eat processed foods that I myself have not processed (like making my own veggie chips), because they use ingredients that I am not used to. It makes me feel sluggish and messes with my hormones. The great thing is how he incorporates exercise into the lifestyle too.

I don't believe in any diet that eliminates or severely limits an entire food group.
Paleo is a bunch of crap. You aren't allowed to have a piece of cheese because it isn't paleo, but you are suppose to use Olive Oil for everything? The website I read said "The Paleo man didn't wander the earth with a cow." But I guess he was wondering the earth with olive press?

But I guess he was wondering the earth with olive press? *sighs* thyme, the primal way of living lets you experiment with what works for you and what doesn't. So I want to ask if you limit your intake of fat, specifically saturated fat that most doctors say is bad. What about salt and meat? What about the people who are gluten intolerant but do not realize it? Those people have to eliminate an entire food group because their body cannot handle it. I recommend reading Cereal Sword (it is a pdf download). The most important part of paleo/primal is getting rid of the processed foods. They have additives that cause a lot of diseases. As far as restricting/limiting food groups, do you really believe that limiting fat is good for you? Carbs are just quick energy, but fat is what provides us with lasting energy and is better overall for our body because of the insulin response that carbs induce. Grains (specifically wheat, rye, etc.) have lectin, which our bodies are not programmed to eat. Some people can handle dairy, others cannot. Some can handle oats, others cannot. Most people really cannot handle wheat. And what about sugar? Would you say that you could have as much sugar as you wanted? Both fat and sugar, according to the FDA food pyramid, are severely limited as a food group. In all honesty, people just need to do their research, ask their doctors smart questions, and not blindly follow advice.

Where did I say that?
I believe in well balanced diets that includes all types of food. I also believe in proper portions. I can eat 2 cookies, but I can't eat 1000 cookies. I guess, technically, that would be a "restriction" but I don't believe you should cut out all cookies and only eat cookies that are made of oatmeal and avocado.[/span]

I find this hard to believe. I found something that said 5% of the population has some kind of food allergy; and only a percentage of those would be allergic to wheat. Hardly "most" IMHO.

Wheat is the cool thing to be allergic to now. I swear my kids are outcasts because they are not gluten intolerant. I can't wait until our world is in total upheaval and we are just given our ration of soylent green, so we are all stop parading around like we know so much more than everyone else on what is and isn't edible.

But I guess he was wondering the earth with olive press? It isn't a bunch of crap if it works for you. Many people do paleo as a lifestyle not a short term diet. I eat about 80-90% primal... Basically- fruits and veg, meat, dairy, and nuts. it isn't A diet... it is my regular diet. on occasion I have some bread, or chocolate or something "non-primal" not every day because I don't crave them every day. I feel exponentially better now than when I ate foods that are processed or have flour/sugar/grains. And those days when I add in those items for just a meal or two- my weight jumps up- even though I've maintained the same level of caloric intake. if you have no problem with maintaining your weight while eating anything you want in moderation- good for you! There's actually a large population of people (myself included) that GAIN weight following the standard dietary rules. 55% of my intake from carbs? I pack on pounds even when keeping my calorie intake well below my expenditure.

According to everything I've read, there is no dairy on paleo - so aren't you breaking the rules?

Why are sweet potatoes so good for you, but regular potatoes are devil food? I've noticed recently that we are suppose to stop eating regular potatoes but sweet potatoes are now super food.
[/span]
Probably the same place I said that we should restrict our fat intake. [/span]

Paeleo works for many because its more whole foods, minimal processed... I think finding out what works for your body is the best thing, and it won't be standard for everyone, but I do think more whole foods, less processing is better for most.
Good oils and fats are good for you by the way... Necessary...

I don't believe regular potatoes are a devil food. I usually have roasted red potatoes once a week. and i hate sweet potatoes-ICK!

I think some people can eat potatoes, and some people can eat sweet potatoes, but that will vary... But as far as nutrients, SP have more.. Plus more throughout, while white potatoes carry nutrients more in the skin which you should NOT be eating, unless you buy organic.
Reg potatoes make a lot of people gain weight, unfortunately, esp if overused as we tend to ...

Exactly. we're all very different and our bodies have different needs and process foods in different ways. we just have to figure out what works for us.

I guess I don't know the difference between primal and paleo - I guess primal is paleo plus dairy.

I also never said that I ate paleo either. I said PRIMAL. And I also said that it allows people to find what works for them. Paeleo works for many because its more whole foods, minimal processed... Pretty much what I said earlier.

I guess I don't know the difference between primal and paleo - I guess primal is paleo plus dairy. Primal is paleo plus dairy and nuts, I believe. Maybe legumes too? I can't remember... I eat legumes regardless. It isn't so much that I follow the primal diet... but more that my daily diet just happens to mostly fall in the "primal" guidelines if that makes sense. I would never attempt to be paleo because i love cheese. I'm snacking on some smoked gouda and turkey right now. But I do know several people who have been eating that way for years and they love it and feel great. More power to them.

If you want to learn more in depth, visit marksdailyapple.com. Cliff notes version: get rid of grains, legumes, processed foods poly-saturated and unsaturated fats/oils. Technically dairy too. But Mark pushes us to find out what works for us. Get rid of things, see if you feel better then add it back in to see if it affects you type thing. He put backs up what he says with studies and puts the science in a way that the layman can understand.

I guess I don't need to name my diet to eat things that make me healthy. I just eat them.
I also don't need to read a website to know what makes me feel healthy.

I've slowly gotten rid off grains. I gave up gluten years ago... Corn last may... I've been off rice, tapioca and potatoes two weeks, still eating lots of food, veggies, fruits, almonds, seeds, dairy free chocolate, chicken and moose ... Lots of olive oil ( what I've tested so far) and lost 8 lb. I did test rice with veggies for lunch but honestly, wasn't as enthused as I thought I'd be. It wasn't the kind of turn off corn and gluten were after I gave thm up, but I could have lived without it...

But that's exactly what the others are saying too... They eat what makes them feel good, it just aligns more with a Paleo/primal approach than a pyramid...

Isn't it nice that we aren't calling your dietary choices CRAP because they may differ that ours? Just a note... I would venture to guess that most of us don't walk around saying things like "I am eating these grapes because I eat a primal diet" I think- "YUM! grapes!" and shove one in my mouth. But in a thread where we are specifically discussing daily diets and the things we eat/don't eat... a NAME is generally easier than writing out all the detail. if it makes you feel better not to name your diet... more power to you.

I'm eating crackers right now - Ritz. With cheese. And an apple. And a cup of coffee, with creamer - fake corn-sugar creamer.
Whoop.

Along with eating clean, I have been juicing. I can't believe how much better I feel AND how much more energy I have. I know not everyone agrees with juicing, but I don't just do juice. I do eat clean snacks and dinner. I lost 5 pounds so far.
Primal/Paoleo helped give me clean eating ideas, but I can't follow the lifestyle everyday. I still make a lot of recipes that I found when I started this thread because I think there are a lot of good recipes.

If I had a soy allergy, would it be possible to even be vegan? I would say that 85% of the vegan recipes I see are based on tofu or other soy-based substitute products (soy cheese, soy sausage, etc.) We have several vegans in our neighborhood, and my nephew is allergic to soy, so I didn't know if that is the same type of soy.
