This is the case in many countries.
Western society associates weight with excess. The third world associates it with means.

...:::"I smiled back. She said (and I am still SO MAD at it) with nicest smile on her face : "You getting FAT!"":::...
A waiter, in a restaurant I frequent, where I am known to tip large, said the exact same thing to me. I punished him with my angry tip: 15%. (I typically give 20 or 25, and that is on top of tax).

I'd chalk it up to language/cultural differences...
Like when I left my last company someone said they were laughing with one eye and crying with the other...I finally figured out they meant it was bittersweet.

Why on earth are you getting so worked up about one comment from a relative stranger? It looks like you are seeking offense where it is very likely that none was offered or intended. Chalk it up to a cultural misunderstanding and get on with your life.
If you absolutely cannot let it go, then the next time you see the woman, explain that her comment was hurtful and ask her why she said it. Then let it go and get on with your life.

NO! I was exactly my today's size! But your explanation makes me think this is what I wanted to hear. That she is not just stupid to that point that she goes and insults people just like THAT! And it is not even an insult because I am pretty happy with my appearance! I can not get hurt by anyone's comment about my looks! it is just that she came to my place and spit in my face!!! For NOTHING!!! Not even disliking me... thanks POM. Lets hear from others. I bet there gonna be stuff to read... weird.....i remember this one patient in the dr office I worked at insulted me very strangely. It was like she cultivated a friendly conversation over a period of a few dr visits, and then insulted me with these wide open innocent eyes. I was the office manager, so I was acting professionally, and so nothing really was said of any importance. After that she walked around the waiting room in a really good mood. This was over 20 years ago and I still remember thinking how bizarre it all was, like she had planned it out, deliberately cultivating the chit chat, then the whammy..... I used to know someone just like that! She would do that to just about everyone she encountered. Turned out she was just crazy. You can't do anything with crazy people. Just smile and nod and move on.

I'v been seething for days now. Then I remember I can come and vent here. About a year ago a young muslim girl came to the store and suddently fell sick. We did all we could to take good care of her and my husband took her home. Later her Mom came and said thank you and we all felt good. Then they went back to Syria and their son was coming to my store and we became good acquaintances. A few days she appeared at my store all draped in blue and smiled to me like a good friend. I smiled back. She said (and I am still SO MAD at it) with nicest smile on her face : "You getting FAT!" -------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------- (that what was going on in my head at the time thinking how to respond) and finally I said : "That was nice!" (that's not emoticon - that is my exact picture) and she said : "It was?" (so she KNEW it wasn't?) and her son yelled : "NO it wasn't MOM!!!" Then he said : "Mom meant you are...strong...and you seem broader than last time she saw you..." and I was ready to throw my laptop at him....when he suddenly stopped apparently feeling my vibes and saw my twitch and ... went to his Mom. When I was ringing her up not looking at her but being very civil wishing she had one of the flies flying rigt in her mouth...she asked me : "why are you so quiet? because of what I said?" I said : "I don't want to talk about it..." and she paid and left. Her son came back and said : "my Mom didn't mean what she said" and I said : 'its ok'. << smiles, nods, moves on >> KIDDING! I Loony!

My three year old son embarrassed me one time when we were standing in a group of women/kids waiting for preschool to begin...he saw an extremely plump woman and said, "Mommy, is she going to have a baby?" Clearly (to me anyways), she was just chubby, but to a three year old... I know she heard him too. Later in the day when I picked him up, I said to him, "Not everyone who is chubby is going to have a baby." Innocent mistake, but I know my face was beet red...

I agree that it might have been a cultural misunderstanding, or, that her English isn't great and she thought "Fat" meant "beautiful", "skinny", "tan", or some such other inoffensive adjective.
Another idea is that she wasn't referring to *you* personally but to your store as in "your store is getting popular/big/profitable/well-stocked/etc.". Not proper English, but very common. My sister owns a retail business and I often ask "How are you guys doing?". I mean the store, of course.

sounds like a good friend....she's not saying you are actually fat....she's warning you that you are getting fat...this way you can nip it in the butt (literally and figuratively ) before it gets out of hand kind of like if your lip stick is messed up or you have a piece of spinach stuck between your teeth....a good friend will let you know before others notice

Not me! I'm going to assume that loony has balloned up to 3-bills, and this gal's undiagnosed Aspergers/Tourette's syndrome called her out on it.

tloony - Most of us look older than dirt and fat to younger generations. It is just the way it is. My dd commented on my "pudding" arms the other day.

She has a son of my age and she was dressed in ugliest man suit I've seen in myt life (btw that is the only thing I saw her wearing ever) and her head was all wrapped in blue...comforter! And I had NOT commented on THAT!!!

Oh - I wish there were the "Did she run away" thread. Thyme! Not quiet there yet but I see they becoming shorter. That is huge...in my book! Keep working on shortening to basically...one (two max) letter. try:'Oh'...

Maybe she meant you were getting Phat. Isn't that some slang term for pretty hot and tempting or something?

Maybe she should have just told you that your melons were ripening nicely ...and how does it include my broader shoulders??? I hate that word! 'Broader'... WTF? Who gets 'broader' unless you are taking a lot of protein and working out madly...
