When I moved in with my aunt and uncle, my aunt thought to start me on chores. I was nine, I got to wash the dishes, vacuum, I forgot what else but things she considered easy chores. We fought, fought, fought about it. So to show me how she gave me the nice ones, she switched them to watering and feeding the chickens, (mind you this included carrying the water out of the coop and to the faucet, filling it and carrying it back full) Walking down to the other barn, about 150 yards away and watering, feeding, and giving the horses hay. Which again making several trips from the main barn to the building the horses had over their field. She thought I would want to switch back to the house work in a week, I kept those chores the rest of the time I lived there. I picked up some others as I got older, like cooking dinner ect... But I still won't vacuum. DH just shakes his head at me and does it. ;D

DD was an only child, due to some medical reasons, so she got all of the kid-type chores. Boy, didn't I hear about that !! DH & I just divideup the chores, but we do have some dust around. He does more housework than I do because I'm still working fulltime. He does almost all of the laundry, marketing, and cooking. I fold the laundry, figure out the bills, help put stuff away, and vacuum and dust.

We have a cubby shelf system in the living room. The bottom right cubby is where dog toys mostly live. When I'm picking up the toys to vacuum, my terrier follows me around, and once I get everything in, he reaches in and pulls one out. He won't pull out all the toys I put away, but just one.

I do 90% of the work. It might have been 85% when I was married to my ex. If he put a load in the washer, it was right before he went to bed and he would ask me to stay up (I worked, too) to put them in the dryer and hang them up. We lived in the woods so there was no outside work. He basically played golf most weekends.
I am remarried, and I still do 90% of the work from grocery shopping to house cleaning to taking the garbage out to whatever. It is a little different now, though. My husband used to do small things (never toilets or floors) like taking all the furniture off the deck when we were going to have it stained. He took the garbage out. The little stuff. Then he hurt his back, and then he discovered he had an abdominal aortic aneurysm. He hasn't recovered so the most he does (and that I allow him to do) is to wash his own clothes and hang them up, load the dishwasher (which is only his plate because we load it all along), and stuff like that.
It doesn't bother me because it doesn't bother him. I didn't vaccuum last Saturday but rather waited until today. That was fine. He is cool with whatever.
I love my husband.

Sarah, as soon as I put the dog's toys up, she starts getting them back out. We have a basket, and sometimes it looks like it exploded. I try to put some of them (but not all) when she is distracted.

Holy crap, my boys have no chores. Well, my oldest is expected to pick up all the toys in the family room and does it about 50% of the time. I just don't have the energy for them to have chores, I am way too tired Lena

I don't have kids yet but I plan to have them do chores. I think my parents got it right with chores. We started young (I don't remember exactly what age but I know it was at age 3 or under because I remember sweeping the porch, weeding, and putting toys away at a house we moved from when I was 3). When we were a little older, I remember helping to sort laundry (must have been like 6) and always needing to clean up my room (including vacuuming). When I was 8, we moved to another house and I we had the chores divided up (each common room, unload dishwasher, load dishwasher, bathrooms, cleaning the kitchen floor, mowing, cleaning out animal cages, feeding the animals, trash, etc). Us kids ranged from 8-14 at that time. We would switch off on weeks that we were responsible for each activity but our parents pretty much weren't involved in the cleaning at that point (they did cook). We tried communal laundry for a little but that din't work out so we just had everyone responsible for their own stuff. It amazed me when I was a teenager and I met people who had never done chores. My Boyfriend when I was 17 (he was 18) never had to do any chores growing up. I found this out when we were dating and his parents left for a vacation. He asked me how do to laundry cuz he was out of clean clothes. I couldn't believe it since I had been doing laundry for around 10 years at that time. It just blew my mind that an 18 year old wouldn't know how to do his own laundry...

Shane, if you use vinegar as a weed killer (and it works great) keep in mind that it'll take whatever grass is nearby with the weed. I used it on dandelions once and had brown spots for a bit.

CL: Right now, the only green things on my lawn are weeds, so no one will notice the brown spots

Do you use Chore charts? I was thinking of making one. And, i want to rotate the chores like emptying the dishwasher and spelling it all out.

I just yell out laundry and dishes... and the kids trample each other trying to get to the laundry first... they hate dishes...

When the kids are older we will rotate as well. I just want to get to 85% consistency so that I know what to expect when I come home most days, and to take some of the responsibility off my plate.

What is this "equitable distribution" of labor you speak of? Being single and childless, I do 100% of everything. Heh, I was just thinking that I'm in charge of the living room, bathroom, kitchen and my bedroom. The dog is in charge of barking at the vacuum cleaner to keep it in line and putting the squeaky toys back where they belong. (Apparently, when I put them in the toy bin, that is wrong) Sounds exactly like my house!
