This period, I had to appraise 22 other people.. I also had to appraise my boss and do my self-appraisal. It is kind of a joke because all the merit numbers and promotions are locked. What we provide will go into the written review, but has no influence on their merit increases or promotions. I'm down to my last one right now and I'm taking a break to make this post before finishing it.

Yes, we do. I can see both sides of having the merit number and promotions locked. If you tell me to evaluate a random (meaning not someone who works under me), I might be hesitant to give them negative feedback if I liked them and their merit was not locked in. I don't want to put something small as an "opportunity for improvement" and have it blown out of proportion by whoever reads it.
I've never had to do 22 though. It's usually around a project and evaluating team members, or evaluating those who I work with often but have no reporting relationship with either way.

It isn't "public" knowledge when merit is locked. Some know it, some don't. Most people I talk to don't believe the 3rd party appraisals or self appraisals have any value. It makes my boss's life easier though as the real review ends up being 80% cut/paste from these sources.

We have to do self-appraisals, which get forwarded to your manager, who then responds. I am not a fan, but we have been getting emails from the SVP about doing them. Mostly because she gets heat if a certain % aren't completed. This process started a few weeks ago, but salary increases were already decided back in May (budget season.) So this is an exercise in futility for most of the employees.

Currently, we have a very simple appraisal process. You get appraised by your boss. That's it. This year raises were announced before appraisals were given, I don't know if that will always be the case. This was our first round of appraisals since the company was sold. Years ago we had a system, where you were supposed to fill in your appraisal form and go to a meeting with your boss who already had an apraisal form on you filled out. During this meeting the boss would tell you what he put on his form and that was your opportunity to add to it, disagree, etc. based on whatever you put on your form. After having the same boss for a while, I realized he never looked at the form his subordinates filled out - so I didn't fill mine out. I walked into his office with a blank piece of paper and discussed my performance for the past year. Everything was going splendidly, until I got too comfortable and let my paper slip down and then he saw it was blank. ;D I still got a great review . But it was the last time I tried to pull that particular trick on him.

last year I had to appraise myself and my boss, this year I didn't. I didn't like doing the self apprasil because I kept thinking who on earth is going to write anything bad about themselves? Reviewing my boss was horribly uncomfortable because he would have to read what I wrote and sign off that I did my self assement.
My boss is a great boss so I had nothing negative to say but I wondered the same thing as I did about my self assesment. If you know your boss is going to read it why would you write anything bad/negative?
I liked this year where my boss did my appraisal and we discussed it. I didn't have to evaluate anyone.

At my job you do your own appraisal based on the form (includes rating based on different rates). It's then sent to your manager and they add to it and change your score to what they think it should be. The final score/appraisal form is used to determine raises though.
I hate having to do my own appraisals. I obviously don't want to write anything bad about myself, but you have to put some things "bad" or that need improvement otherwsie it seems like you're just writing down rainbows and unicorn farts. So frustrating/stressful.
