I was in the family court attorney's waiting room yesterday waiting for a trial to start.
There was an abuse/neglect case going on at the same time and the pictures were being passed around the waiting room.
One of the pictures was a Food Stamp/Benefit card with the mom's picture on it being used to cut cocaine on a plate.
Discuss.

why not? the DSS attorneys were waiting for their trial and they have the exhibits with them. It's not like they were being passed around the public.

...was it the mom cutting the cocaine, or somebody else who swiped her card?

Well - if we take away food stamps the kids chances of getting any food gets even slimmer.
Although, taking the kid away would be most effective.

...and isn't there a little disclaimer on the card that reads something like, "it's a crime to use this other than for its intended purpose"?

Let's look at it in a postive light, using her food stamp card surely means she didn't have any other credit cards to use.

Once all the money is used up, it is just a piece of plastic. She was following reduce, reuse, recycle!

Poor child. I hope he/she is able to heal from the damage this mother has done. I guess her "benefit" card benefited her in more ways than one.

Mom should have known you use a mirror to cut lines not a plate. Geez.

DH had a case in their courtroom where a mom had been advertising her services on a local escort website. She tried to claim it wasn't her but there were pictures of her.
Then another mother's ex-BF produced her FB page where she was complaining that her current BF (a drug dealer) had a shoot out in their front yard. Mom was apparently complaining on FB that a neighbor would call the police and get her BF arrested (apparently no one got injured, so why call the cops?)
As Prince Harry can tell you, you should be careful of photos and web posts.

And then she was going to snort the lines with a rolled up $100 bill.

After the child is removed the dept of child welfare should turn over this evidence to the police. Mom gets convicted on a drug shrge. Benefits cease saving beacoup taxpayer $. Child wlefare can then petition court for full, permanent custody & go for adoption.

So many people want to adopt and could give this child a stable and loving home. In one generation we could wipe out this mentality.

Shooby, ao it doesn't "embarrass" the user. Those days of being embarrassed to be on the dole are long gone, though. Now you're a sucker if you aren't on it.

After the child is removed the dept of child welfare should turn over this evidence to the police. Mom gets convicted on a drug shrge. Benefits cease saving beacoup taxpayer $. Child wlefare can then petition court for full, permanent custody & go for adoption. Varies by area of course, but in Phoenix, things wouldn't have worked quite like that. Mom would be convicted on a drug charge, but the costs to feed and house her in jail would be significantly higher than the benefits she's currently receiving, so no savings there. Also, parents in jail do not necessarily lose custody; the kids are placed with a relative or in foster care, but visitation still continues and incarceration itself isn't a huge factor in the decision making process on whether or not to remove the child. From what I experienced, as long as the incarcerated parent was "making progress" on the steps needed to "reunify" the family (and reunification was the default plan for every family), then jail time wasn't a big problem. Sadly the defined steps a parent needed to take to prove worthiness were often made easier for them in jail. Guess in jail, you have more free time to actually attend substance abuse counseling or parenting classes, plus it's much less likely you're running around the neighborhood getting into more truoble. So I'm not suggesting the Mom shouldn't be prosecuted, just debunking the idea that it would either save the taxpayers money or do anything other than delay the parent getting the child back.

And if she wasn't prosecuted, but did not have the children, most benefits would cease, because the majority of benefits are tied to the children, correct? ... so, if its easier to terminate rights and costs less to not prosecute the drug case and incarcerate, i'd be for that path...
The idea that in the 'good old days' EVERYONE was embarrased to be on welfare... and today NO ONE is embarrased by having to accept assistence... is not even close to accurate... The Way We Never Were... seriously people, give it a read...

Maybe selling drugs counts towards the 20 hours of weekly work you need to qualify for SNAP?
