I just need to get better at communicating. I don't want my wife to feel like she has to lie to me because of my reaction when she tells the truth.

we must not have enough hammydowns left. Is the term hammydown a regional thing? We call it hand me downs. But I'm thinking hammydown is pretty cute for young kids.

In all seriousness, Archie, that's a great first step. But she still shouldn't lie, regardless of your reaction. Sounds like you both could make a bit of a change.

Have you taken into account that women are bad at math? Speak for yourself, thyme! I'm an actuary and DH majored in English. I wouldn't get away with that excuse in our house. ;D

Even so, $600 seems excessive even, unless you've got a money tree in your back yard. I have three, with two going to grade school. I spent less than $200 on clothes, and with school supplies including a jansport backpack, I think we came in at about 275.

Try talking to her instead of glaring at her.

You are a good guy. I'm thinking your wife is lucky and I'm thinking you are smart enough to have picked a good wife, so you're a good match. In 10 years, you won't remember the $400, but you probably would remember the tough times you have if you don't keep working on things together, so you're smart to keep trying. Good luck.

I just need to get better at communicating. I don't want my wife to feel like she has to lie to me because of my reaction when she tells the truth. Now, that's an answer! Archie, you're quite a guy. She shouldn't have lied to you. There's no question about that. However, if there is an atmosphere in which she feels she's going to be criticized, or made to feel guilty, that atmosphere needs to change to one that's more conducive to open communication. Kudos to you for seeing that and admitting it!

Um, Thyme is a financial analyst. I'm pretty sure she was being facetious. I know. That's why I included the "grin" icon.

When Goose asks me how much money I spent when I go shopping either I tell him or I say "enough that you will be getting realllllly lucky later." It is a win win situation for me. So did you get really lucky Archie?

LOL - but I love to tell my boss that I'm bad at math. They all have laughed nervously when I say it.

I spent about $250 on my kids, but I only bought them summery clothes. My son will wear shorts almost all year round. There are a couple of weeks that he wears pants, and he will wear pants once a week or so - but his shorts never get put away. I will spend another $200 or so when it starts to get cold. I like to wait as long as possible to buy jeans, so they fit. If I bought them now, they would just sit in the drawer, and my kids would grow another 2 inches (or not.) I will say, the group of clothes I bought included a couple of pairs of leggings for my daughter. She will be able to wear them all winter.

Well at least she was not shopping with her boss, which she is doing today, for school supplies. She just emailed me, "we spent $3500, crazy!"
not sure if she read my email yet....

LOL. No, that isn't our money. that is the school's money she is spending. Archie I am married to Mr Cheap who also also hates to spend money. He is perfectly happy with his two pairs of shoes and two suits. He doesn't understand why women need so many clothes and shoes. He doesn't understand why I can't get my whole wardrobe at Walmart. After 28 years of marriage we have reached the following arrangements 1) he does the grocery shopping, he does a MUCH better job at sticking to the list and comparison shopping, and 2) when I go clothes shopping he doesn't ask what I spent, because he knows he doesn't want to know. That way I don't have to lie. I make 2x what he does, we pay all our bills each month and put a big chunk in savings, so it isn't like I'm driving us to the poorhouse with wanton spending. But I do own more than 2 pairs of shoes.
