Most people feel that infidelity is unacceptable. So then why is it when you see two compatible (yet romantically unavailable) characters in a movie/book/TV show, most people root for them to get together? Like The Office - most people were rooting for Jim and Pam to get together even though she was engaged to Roy. We wouldn't root for one of our friends to cheat on their SO, so why should we root for fictional characters to do it?

probably the same reason that people think the dysfunctional mess that is Edward and Bella belong together.

True love is a romantic notion. It is not a realistic one. We want to root for true love, even though in reality we know it doesn't really happen that way...
And/or maybe we recognize our own mistakes (or at least the realistic limitations) for which we have settled in our own Roy, and want Pam to make a better choice...
I really don't know..

I guess for the same reason that a huge portion of the love interests in movies and television shows are people that hate each other and are fighting the whole time, and then they fall into each other's arms and we leave the movie theater thinking they will live happily ever after. It is a stupid plot line. I would never want my friends to meet someone who they did nothing but fight. I would tell them to run like hell, because the relationship is toxic and they will just batter each other for the rest of the time they can stand being together.

I think that it has less to do with infidelity and more to do with romanticizing the idea of one true love. That people aren't necessarily cheering for them to cheat, more to break up already and get together already or back together (Ross & Rachel). But they're then more forgiving of cheating because they see the person they're cheating with as that person's true love and the one they're cheating on as the "other person". At least I hope.

"but wait - didn't they later back flash to show is was consensual? "
Yeah, because the liberals were up in arms years later...it wasn't consensual...they were at the Disco, he was being hunted and he raped her...

Jen, you are forgetting the statistics that I quoted the other day...60% of married men and 50% of married women HAVE cheated....so I'm not sure where you are going wtih the "something we would not do ourselves"....

Movies often have at least one of the main characters married or engaged to someone is who a complete ass which usually helps the audience cheer someone on to be a cheater or be with someone more suited for them. This is one reason I shy away from the romantic comedies. They are all so predictable.

People do outlandish things on TV and in the movies because no one would pay money to watch a show or a movie about normalcy.

Because I'm not allowed to choke the snot out of coworkers in RL, so it gives me perverse pleasure to see it acted out on screen.
Same with screwing the pool boy. ;D

I always thought this kind of scenario was predicated by the other spouse being a loser - ie the Spouse who finds true love DESERVES the true love because their current spouse is such a loser.
I assume it has something to do with all the Husbands on TV shows being somewhat witless pudgy and child like (a man child) while having a beautiful, smart, wife (surrogate mother). I don't see too many married couples on TV that I would say would be good role models.

I wonder how many people see themselves as the person stuck with a loser and these stories give them hope.
