The Absurd Laws That Criminalize Audio and Video Recording in AmericaThe growing accessibility of recording devices is prompting officials to dig up dusty old eavesdropping laws that are being used to intimidate the nation's citizens. That's up to 75 years in prison for breaking a law Allison did not know existed, and which he violated in the name of protecting himself from what he saw as an injustice. Without the recordings of these events (and many, many others like them), justice probably never would have been realized, and the truth never brought to light. Unless we overturn the nation's most over-the-top eavesdropping laws, our legal system will continue to obstruct, rather than promote, justice. This is the antithesis of liberalism.

Ok second time it went away....forget my message. Never knew about those laws, and even if only a few states have them, it seems that it is one that the ACLU would have gone after , but if not , I wonder if there is more to the story then shown and more of a reason to be on the books as a statute to officials from doing their jobs. There usually a reason given when statues are enacted... That it is said most will not go to prison for those terms, there is a expensive cost, attorneys to be hired and paid and a record if arrested plus the embarrassing fact of spending time in jail, whether for a day or a week...and going through what all that entails.

Um, I hate to break it to my "conservative" friends, but most of the people I know who are "law and order" conservatives have blindly supported the police for so long that their support has created the police state we now live in. Oh, they'll complain about it in individual cases here and there, but I fault conservatives more than anyone for "zero tolerance" and other increasingly nonsensical policies in the name of public safety and "law and order" than anyone. Let someone be shot 1,000 times in the back in their own yard in NYC and you watch and see who comes running to defend the police. Betcha it's Sean Hannity & company.

Yeah, I think you can call me a "progressive" on this issue- especially after reading the article. The police are out of control. Tazering grandma, handcuffing kindergartners, harrassing, intimidating, and abusing citizens-- to say nothing of the illegal wiretapping of US in the name of fighting terrorism...I have been trying to WAKE UP! my "law and order" conservative friends for years. Seems hopelessly lost on them even when I explain it in terms I'd think they'd get: you can't fear a "police state" led by Obama or anyone else- and not fear the police. It's those people who will and do enforce bad liberal policy like zoning laws, healthcare laws, "eyesore" laws, imminent domain (SP?) laws, and others that we have to hold MOST accountable. Let the politicians pass bad laws- then let us collectively ignore them. It's a proud American tradition to be on the side of justice, opposed to the law.
