Please don't worry, in a worst-case scenario, we would be soliciting for exactly 75 cents 50 cents.
The day we started our road trip, DS3 found an Oregon quarter from Crater Lake (on the way to Crater Lake). The next day he got a CA quarter in change from Yosemite (on the way to Yosemite). Long story short, we decided to see how many different quarters we could collect on our road trip.
We collected 35 after our road trip from CA. Turns out my sister has been collecting quarters for a very long time from when her two DDs (in their mid 30s now) needed to do laundry at school.
Once we were done with her collection, DS3 was up to 47! He is missing just three: Indiana, South Dakota, and Texas.
I'm hoping we'll get them ourselves in the next two weeks. But if we don't, I'd be very grateful to whomever could help DS3 complete his collection. And I'd be very happy to send out euros / postcards / stamps in exchange.

Don't tell your son, but there are actually two of every state quarter - on the front some have "D" and some have a "P." It depends on which mint they were manufactured at - Philadelphia or Denver. So you could be in search for 100 quarters instead of just 50. ;D

UPDATE We got home this morning. In the end we found Puerto Rico (which I didn't know had a quarter) at my niece's house, and Indiana when my sister's boyfriend got a bunch of quarters for parking. So we're just missing Texas and South Dakota now! Steph, there is NO WAY I'm going to tell my son that! LOL The whole exercise was a lot of fun. Our last night we met up with two of my very close college friends and their wives, and everybody was emptying their pockets. It was fun. Joss, we would be thrilled to have those two quarters if it's no hardship! I will PM you but I wanted to update the thread.

My parents collected both sets as they came out and they are collecting the national park set now. They also collected the President set of coins. They are optimists as they are 88 years old!
Each of the 4 grandchildren gets a set of the coins.

steph, there's actually a third mint (the location is escaping me at the moment) that doesn't have a mint stamp anywhere on the coin. debt - definitely don't tell your son that!

Debt, you have created a monster! Your poor kid will become a coin collector. He will be forever looking for that special coin. AND, he will find out about the P and D.

You can buy the two missing quarters on ebay for a small amount of money. My husband has two sets of the state quarters, and I got him the three states he needed to finish his various sets for Christmas one year. It cost about $ 6 including shipping and handling and he loved his present.

They also sell those cardboard wall maps to place each quarter in corresponding state slot. My nephew has one hanging in his room and I think it looks very nice.

I think collecting the state quarters is a good thing for a kid to do, especially if you get one of those maps of the states. The kids are learning geography in a fun way.
Plus you may get some free money (quarters from people) but maybe that is teaching the kids to beg rather than earn their money

I immediately dug around in my purse. I have two Indiana, a Georgia and a bi-centenial quarter. Figures.
I know we had a Texas and a South Dakota at my house, and just this weekend my husband said "We failed at collecting these - I'm putting them back into circulation." So, if he put them in the change jar, I'll dig them out and send them to you.

I have the quarters from the two states where I have lived, but they are mine. I didn't keep the entire set.
I also have a breast cancer dime I got in change while in Toronto.

I had a couple of older quarters and one from Hawaii.
I have a huge jar of change at home that has a couple hundred $$ in it. Unfortunately, no access right now.

My husband collects the President series. They've never been out of the boxes. Lol. They are stored in the safety deposit box. I have a complete mint (uncut) sheet set of the state stamps. I always meant to get that framed. It's rather awesome looking. I bought them at regular price from USPS, figuring they would always be worth what I paid since postage doesn't expire.

Bluerobin, I will NOT tell DS3 that! lol Seagul, Bonny was right, the fun was the chase. Somehow ebay doesn't seem right. Xia I will DEFINITELY order one of those! I didn't even know they existed until this thread! We were planning on getting a frame from Ikea and DH was going to mount the quarters but getting one of those is definitely a better idea. It will be one of DS3's Christmas / Hanukah gifts. Molly, hey, can't a YMer solicit for just 50 cents?! lol GeorgiaGal I agree about the geography! And I DO see your point, but until the post here, trust me, I have not "begged". I just asked friends and family to check their pockets, and replaced any coin we took. At this point, I have a HUGE stock of quarters LOL. I replaced every single quarter we got from friends or family except for my sister's (because she wouldn't let me). Also, DS3 doesn't beg. He works for his pocket money. He doesn't need to beg, since I'm doing it for him. TheOtherMe I think it's cute that you still have yours! TD and Mich Thanks so much for checking! That is very sweet of you. Thyme THANK YOU! I know you would have sent them, and I really appreciate it. SS I agree, they would look great framed! Do it for one of your grandkids, or for your DH ... BUT, I hit the jackpot today! Joss has so kindly offered to send both quarters over with her sister who lives in Europe. She doesn't want anything in exchange, so I guess I did in fact just "beg" for 50 cents LOL. I offered to take her and / or her sister out for coffee or lunch, and I truly hope she or her sister (or both) take me up on it one day!
