bump - where are you book club organizers?
Oped - I've been here and I don't recall seeing a thread about another book.

I loved Life of Pi!
Right now I'm reading Lost in Shangri-La. It's an amazing true story about an american plane that crashed in this valley in New Guinea during WWII and how the survivors were rescued. The people in the valley were amazing primitive - they hadn't invented the wheel yet!

I liked the Bee one where they made it into a movie with Queen Latifa. The book was good. Maybe Secret Life of Bees? or something.

lost in Shangri-La sounds like it would be good. I love survival stories. Crazy for the Storm is another fabulous one. It's about an 11 year old boy who walked down off a mountain after his plane crashed into it, killing his father and father's girlfriend. It's not only about survival but about his relationship with his father.

I just read the immortal life of Henrietta lacks... It was good... It was pre-loaded on a Nook I checked out at the library. My intent was to read Catching Fire, but I admit I got sidetracked by The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I thought the author did a good job of explaining the science-y stuff in it, and bouncing around in the timeline. It was much more interesting than I'd expected it to be. And now I still have to finish Catching Fire!

I still haven't read We Need to Talk About Kevin yet. I also want to read The Tiger's Wife.

I'm reading the Dovekeepers right now. And Enchantments.
From Amazon:
The Dovekeepers is Alice Hoffman’s most ambitious and mesmerizing novel, a tour de force of imagination and research, set in ancient Israel.
In 70 C.E., nine hundred Jews held out for months against armies of Romans on Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert. According to the ancient historian Josephus, two women and five children survived. Based on this tragic and iconic event, Hoffman’s novel is a spellbinding tale of four extraordinarily bold, resourceful, and sensuous women, each of whom has come to Masada by a different path. Yael’s mother died in childbirth, and her father, an expert assassin, never forgave her for that death. Revka, a village baker’s wife, watched the horrifically brutal murder of her daughter by Roman soldiers; she brings to Masada her young grandsons, rendered mute by what they have witnessed. Aziza is a warrior’s daughter, raised as a boy, a fearless rider and an expert marksman who finds passion with a fellow soldier. Shirah, born in Alexandria, is wise in the ways of ancient magic and medicine, a woman with uncanny insight and power.
The lives of these four complex and fiercely independent women intersect in the desperate days of the siege. All are dovekeepers, and all are also keeping secrets—about who they are, where they come from, who fathered them, and whom they love.

I read a great book by Laura Moriarity called The Chaperone. It is sort of based on a true incident . . . Louise Brooks was a flapper-age movie star. When she was 15, her mother hired a chaperone to take her to NYC. That's the end of the true part. Moriarity changed the name of the chaperone and created a story about why a Midwestern matron would agree to do this.
It was, quite honestly, a great read. I bought it because of reviews by the NYT and USAToday.
My only problems with a book like The Secret Life of Bees (the one Thyme mentioned) is that (a) it is another YA novel and (b) it was published many years ago. I know it has been five or six years since I read it.

I thought The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks was a great read as well - definitely more interesting than I expected! And The Secret Life of Bees was another great one! Life of Pi is on my list to read, but I haven't read that one yet.

I'm up for anything. Other books on my stack are The Stone Carvers by Jane Urquhart and Unspun.. a nonfiction book on 'finding facts in a world of disinformation' ... i want to read to see if i want to use it with the kids... can't vouch for either one, haven't read them yet... anyone else?
For those who liked Hunger Games, try Divergent. I liked it even better, although i can't say everyone will... haven't started the second one yet.
