Let me guess, they put you on a 12 month deal? What will the price be when it runs out?

We ALMOST signed up with Direct TV. Funny, right before installation (we didn't even have their service yet) we received a collection call telling us we were late on our bill. What??? We stopped the installation and stayed with Comcast. They do play the "call us and threaten to cancel" game to lower our bill once a year, but, we haven't had any issues with their service in quite some time.

Funny, I just did the reverse (went from Comcast to DirecTV). Same issues - Comcast kept raising their rates and wouldn't cut me a deal so we bailed. As soon as I officially cancel, they are calling me right/left offering me deals. ARE YOU KIDDING? I even warned them that I was absolutely going to cancel if they did not at least partly meet DirecTV's offer and they said no...and then I switch and they offer to meet DirecTV's offer. Idiots. I agree with the pp - cable companies always treat potential new customers better than current customers. I have to admit I was livid with DirecTV when the Viacom thing happened. DH watches TV, but basically I don't...except for The Daily Show (Comedy Central). I called them and bitched about the situation and they gave me $15 off. I can't wait for the day when technology makes cable companies obsolete - they are all dishonest and conniving. I'll happily pay a show directly to watch them, but don't throw 100 crap channels that no one ever watches into a pile and call it an entertainment package. Puhleez.

DH called Direct TV and got us the Starz movie channels for 6 months and a $20/month discount off our bill for 6 months due to the Viacom issue. He just kept telling them he was going to cancel since those are the channels we watch, and finally got around to the right person to make a deal.

...I agree with those of you who are amused and irritated by the telecom companies... treat us right, and we'll become loyal... duh... ...and sadly, we may have to go back to DirectTV due to a move into an area with no cable... not looking forward to it at all... I hated loosing reception in stormy conditions...

::Three weeks went by, and they just kept stating that "they were in negotiations."::
I'm not sure where you keep pulling "3 weeks", the blackout lasted 10 days.
What resolution did you want? You probably lost 10% of your channels at most, for 30% of the month. So you switched for the cost of 3% of one bill? What would you prefer DirecTv work on? Getting your channels back, or the $3 of service you lost out on?
I have DirecTv, the entire thing was a minor blip at most. You missed a few channels for 10 days, and then you gained a few stations.

We had DISH for the last 10 years. When I canceled they offered me $10 a month off of our service for a year. That was their "best offer." I canceled. They asked me why and I said that $10 off of $110 was still more than my budget of $8 for Netflix...
I could sign-up with DirectTV for a low cost for a year, but the second year it would be expensive again. So, I am sticking with Netflix and streaming. However, it does suck to not have access to any Olympic coverage...

::So, if we're paying for certain channels, and there isn't a natural disaster, I want the channels we're paying for. I don't like golf, or old football game reruns, or "family" channel stuff, so we don't pay extra for those. We do pay extra for the tier that carries Bravo, Spike and Comedy Channel. I expect them to be there. I'm sure that you can understand that. ::
I understand what you want, but until they know how long the outage will last, how do you expect them to know what adjustments they're willing to make to your bill? I assume you'd want a much different adjustment for 3 months than 10 days.
From the way you're phrasing things it sounds like you wanted THEM to make YOU an offer on something YOU wanted to happen. This is a classic way to be left unhappy, essentially telling them to guess what you want rather than just telling them. You just keep repeating "they didn't offer me anything", but YOU called THEM to ask them for something. I wouldn't expect them to make you an offer when you're the one who wants them to do something, and I definitely wouldn't expect them to make an offer without knowing the extent of things.
And yes I know this is sexist, but this is a classic example of the female attitude:
"I want something from you."
"Oh? What do you want?"
"Make me an offer!"
"What? I don't know, you're the one who brought it up."
"Forget you then, I'm done."
::However, it does suck to not have access to any Olympic coverage...::
Do you not have access to local stations? It's on NBC.

And for the record, no you don't. These are all in the base package. You might pay extra for another tier, but it's not for these channels.

I don't know about Bravo and Spike, but Comedy Central is on DirecTV's cheapest package.
