We both know very well that if you were a serial killer, you would target people you met on internet message boards, attach yourself to some local tragedy, and then ask them to pick you up at the airport and drive you out to the middle of nowhere at night.Hey, there's a thought! *makes note in serial killer idea book*

Busy week at work. I'll post a bit later.
No BS, I've got a huge client out here for the week, and I'm responsible for babysitting the crotchety old guy on the team with severe OCD that isn't allowed to interact directly with customers or clients. It's been a treat so far. We keep the crotchety old guy around because his brilliance is worth putting up with his issues.... that's the official line anyway. I used to agree when he sat on the opposite coast. Sharing an office with him might be enough to drive me completely insane though.
I thought they were exaggerating about his OCD issues until he called to arrange his ride from the airport and back and forth to work because he doesn't rent cars or ride in taxi's. Right at that point I realized why so many people were snickering while talking about his week long visit out here.

Different perspective, but I was reading some issue of REDBOOK while waiting for DH to see the dr. today. Anyway, a doctor wrote about a woman who said she had a "funny feeling" about her breasts. She had had a mammogram 6 months before. He felt, and there wasn't anything. But because of her feeling, he ordered another mammogram even though it wasn't standard procedure.
She was in the very beginning stages of cancer.

It depends. The consequences usually aren't as severe as they might have been if you were right. But if you follow them and get out of the situation, you never really *know* if you had anything to be afraid of in the first place.
Let's say this guy had just given us a bad vibe, minus his freaky stories/red flags. And we still decided to pack up and leave because we trusted our guts and it was better to be safe than sorry.
We would have had to drive home in the middle of the night and we would have missed out on the remainder of our camping trip. Considering the fact that he WAS giving off so many obvious red flags, I consider this a more than fair trade against the possibility that we might have been harmed. However, what if we left based simply on a bad feeling? We might have gotten back home and convinced ourselves that it was all in our head and we had given up a perfectly nice camping trip for no reason.
This is how you can basically torture yourself to death with the question of what if. There is ALWAYS a possibility that you sacrificed fun for paranoia. And that's not how I want to live the majority of the time. But since you never actually know, there's also a possibility that you've saved yourself a ton of grief all this time.

There is if you're a kid! It's hella fun when you're not overly concerned with minutiae like personal hygiene or keeping to a schedule or bears or really much of anything other than whether the s'more supply is fully stocked.
Actually, that's how DH and I met - on a camping trip when we were 5 and 8.

Most people leave their cars unlocked when they're camping Plus if you were to steal from certain campsites - OUR campsite, for example - and you knew what you were looking for, you could easily find $1k or so of resalable camping equipment. REI takes items back no questions asked, and some of our stuff is expensive. At any rate, it would be a bitch to replace.

^See, YOU TWO, random campers reported strange behavior that sent up red flags. WHY didn't the gun range owner at least report the odd message on that Aurora, CO shooter's machine??? Who knows...if the police would have showed up at his place just to talk to him...could something have prevented this tragedy???
I have heard some pretty bad messages on answering machines over the years. People who have thought they were funny, people who were attempting to be movie character, people who have their toddler leave the message. You really think a garbled message that makes no sense warranted police action?
Monday morning quarterbacking doesn't help.

One of my dearest friends is an enthusiastic singer and has recorded on her home answering machine the most god-awful, bizarro sung message. Honestly, if I didn't know her, I'd think she was insane. But she's not... she's just not good at making up a singing message.
