From the article: A series of polls released late Wednesday made clear that the economy remains the most constant and influential variable in the 2012 presidential campaign, helping to explain the strategies and posture of both Mitt Romney and President Obama. Though Romney has been besieged by millions in negative ads questioning his tenure at Bain Capital and whether he should release more tax returns, the presumptive Republican nominee remains basically even versus the president in polls. The reason? Three new polls suggest that voters' optimism about the state of the economy has slid, making Obama more vulnerable to efforts that seek to turn the campaign into a referendum on his economic management. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney Thirty-nine percent of registered voters said in the New York Times/CBS poll released yesterday that they approve of Obama's handling of the economy, versus 55 percent who disapprove. As a matter of comparison, voters disapproved of Obama's economic management by a tighter margin — 44 percent approving, 48 percent disapproving — in the April version of the same poll. firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/07/19/12833875-polls-suggest-the-economy-is-becoming-heavier-burden-for-obama?chromedomain=nbcpolitics&lite

Mr President, please keep attacking Bain Capital. This will not work. The American people are aware of what is wrong in the country, and Bain Capital is not the problem. Nor is Mitt Romney's tax returns. Shear demagoguery and class warfare Where are the jobs, Mr. President? At this rate, the election result will be known before the Democratic Presidential nomination takes place.

It's not just the lack of jobs that has people like me freaking, it's the deficit and uncontrolled spending. Voters do not necessarily vote their convictions, or worries. Voters always vote their economic pocketbook.

politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/07/19/boehner-blasts-obama-campaign-weighs-in-on-veepstakes/(CNN) – House Speaker John Boehner on Thursday stood by his argument that President Barack Obama doesn't give a "damn" about unemployed, middle class Americans, saying Obama has been more focused on his role as candidate than president. "The president checked out last Labor Day. And he's been on the campaign trail nonstop ever since," Boehner said on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer."

I am worried about the economy. However, Obama didn't create the problem and even worse the regulations that need to be in place to prevent a future debacle aren't. In fact the bailout created bigger banks that are apparently too big to not bailout. Because of Romney's connections in the financial community I expect him to continue to ease regulations for Wall Street etc. possibly recreating the 2008+ credit crisis on a larger level. There are pundits predicting that will happen but not necessarily who might be in office. Its unclear if the politicians as a whole won't fix what caused the crisis, how soon the crisis might recurr and how many times worse it would be.
I have almost no faith that the two primary political parties have the will to do the right things to right the economy.

RCP has had it at a dead heat for over a month.

I notice Mr. Romney is looking a bit haggard at some of his recent appearances. I don't think he's getting enough sleep.
