I have noticed that fifty or sixty years ago, both parties already have held their nomination conventions by now.
Why do both parties now hold the conventions so close to the actual election date? Everyone says the election does not get interesting until after the nomination process has been achieved. Two months of electioneering is not enough time for most Americans to make an INFORMED DECISION. Of course, we know electioneering is in full force, but if many Americans are waiting til September, we have a problem. Of course we know 85% have already made up their minds, but the other 15% should have more than two months to wake up and smell the coffee, so to speak. Thoughts?

I actually , in some ways miss the drama and the excitement of the old ways..the back room, cigar filled rooms att he conventions were the process of selecting the candidates were done.. Remembering the king makers, for the Dems, "John Daly " the Ct honcho who pushed through Kennedy against all odds and the pubs having their own king maker.. I wonder if in some ways we didn't get the better candidates from those type of doings..

Americans aren't "waiting til September", they are busy with vacations, barbecues, and other assorted summer fun. Nominating conventions won't change that.

Significant to the timing of the conventions?

I don't know that it is true, but I heard a rumor once that there is some sort of "middle ground" between apathy and obsession. I've never been there but the brochure looks nice
