So, some weeks back I posted about DNA testing. Due to a strong family history of Alzheimer's disease, I was worried that I might have the APoE 4 gene variant that is associated with late onset Alzheimers disease.
Short version. I paid $300 to have my DNA tested. I do not have the variant. My risk factor is the same (no moe and no less) as that of the general population. I am hugelt relieved. $300 well spent.....

That is great news GG!! I know exactly how you feel because that's how I felt with the results of my BRCA1 test.

That's great! Now when you can't remember where you left your keys, I hope you can relax and realize that none of us remember where we left our keys. ;D

Congratulations ~~ I've had my DNA done as well, it answered a ton of questions. I'm happy that I know what I need to know.

Thaks, all of you. It WAS a little scary, but I simply had to know. I'm happy that we now have the ability to find out for ourselves... And I've stopped freaking out when I go into a room and forget why I went there.... I wonder if you can get tested for Parkinsons? That runs in my family and freaks the hell out of me. The test I took does test for genetic predisposition to Parkinsons. (Very much like testing for the APoE/4 variant that is associated with Alzheimer's.) You need to be aware that testing only gives you your risk factor based on genetics. Not having the risk factor does not guarantee that you'll never get it and having the risk factor does not doom you either. But I'd do some soul searching and ask yourself, "How will I feel - what will I do if the results are bad news?" According to 23andme (the company I used), heredity accounts for 27% of the risk factor for Parkinsons (by way of comparison, the heritability factor for Alz is 60%-80%) The heritability of Parkinson's is relatively low but a recent study estimated it to be about 27% in European populations. This means that environment generally plays a larger role than genetics in determining a person's risk for the disease. However, a small fraction of Parkinson's cases are attributed to rare mutations in a small number of genes, including the G2019S mutation in LRRK2, which is included in this report. People with the LRRK2 G2019S mutation have a much higher than average risk of developing Parkinson's disease during their lifetimes. This report also discusses other genetic factors that are associated with higher risk for PD in European and Asian populations. (sources)www.23andme.com/you/journal/parkinson/overview/

Yay!!!! You're brave. I don't think I'd want to know. Really? I want to know everything. I wonder if you can get tested for Parkinsons? That runs in my family and freaks the hell out of me. So happy for you GG! There are some genetic tags for Parkinson's, however, there are many with Parkinson's that do not have the tags we have found.

Awesome news! I'm actually waiting for the results of some tests to come back right now, so hopefully mine will be positive (well, outcome wise anyway, which will actually be a negative test result) as well.

All my results came back good as well. Except my stupid cholesterol. I have really low good and bad cholesterol. Always have. Every doc scratches their head at the results and tells me to eat more fish, but they never seem that worried about it. Anyway, the important thing is my STD test came back negative.

STD test? Well, that's really surprising, ummm, good that you don't have any of those diseases! Congratulations on your results!

I have to admit I thought it might be a paternity test from way back when! Because that's the other test one might hope comes back negative!

Lol. It's not like that. I mean, kind of. I did swap spit with somebody other than my wife, and then get some kind of funky infection thing going on, but it wasn't sexual.
Thankfully I don't have to worry about that kind of thing. Unless something happened that I don't remember while I was black out drunk back in the day...

You know how in court you can plead the fifth? Is there a similar thing to keep from divulging your own HIPPA protected stuff? If so I'm pleading that.

Sure you can Dark! Just hope that your doc can afford his rent or mortgage and won't leave your files in his recycling bin like Bonnap's tenant did!
