The only purpose of money is to be spent.
Discuss.

Well yeah, unless you burn it for heat, it really has no purpose except being spent.

Are they not forms of spending too, or at least a way to delay, but still ultimately spend, money?

Saving and investing is simply a manner in which you are attempting to preserve or grow the spending power of the money you have.

...I suppose I wonder if this is a micro-level discussion, or a macro one? and are we talking currency itself, or the resources it represents?
...because currency is simply a measurement, much like inches or pounds... and if I measure the rise and fall of the quantity of my resources, then I suppose you could say that I spent money or earned money to explain that change...
...but there is charity that I don't "spend" (I give) and the potential subsequent spending thereof is not "relevant" to me...
...and there is saving that I don't spend even though the subsequent sense of security "buys" me exponentially more than the actual dollars involved...
...and I think I need to go get some chocolate milk to think any more about this discussion...
;D

I disagree -- the entire reason you're giving the money to charity is so they can spend it on their mission.

To quote Homer Simpson's brain as he pondered how a $20 bill he found could get him more peanuts, "Money can be exchanged for goods and services."

I think the purpose of money is to serve as a temporary store of 'human energy'. You can then exchange your store of energy for something else that was produced by someone else's energy. Or you save it up for years and then expend it later. These transactions are difficult with simply bartering, and may even be impossible.
But, yes, in the end, it will be spent. By someone, you or your heirs.

Gold bars are too heavy to carry around.

To me: Money provides security. A measure of control over my immediate surroundings. I don't care about power.
To others: Power. Influence. Control.

You don't think that security and control has something in common with power? You just don't want power over others.
But alas - you do have power over others. People want your money, you have the power.

Just off the top of my head...
I use a quarter to check my numbers on my lottery scratchers
I have a jar of coins that makes for a handy doorstop
And slapping someone with a pile of junk mail isnt nearly as classy as smacking them with a pile of benjamins.

The only purpose of money is to be spent. Discuss. Disagree. You can also roll around naked in it, or use it in place of water in your swimming pool.

The OP's statement is oversimplified. It's like saying 'The only point of living is to die.' There's a whole bunch of detail inbetween those two events - or at least one hopes so.

People want your money, you have the power. I once asked my brother why his only mission in life was to be wealthy. His reply was it's not the money so much as the power he gained from it. So yes, I would agree here.

in the winter, you can light it on fire and stuff in the chimney and it will like keep you warm or something
also some people roll around with it naked in their bed for happiness
so there are other uses for money, I am sure if I thought about it I could think of more
