Why does it seem that companies and banks LOVE to take their sweet time sending out forms? I have half my forms but still can't file...anyone else jsut as frustrated?

Unfortunately, it isn't as simple as blinking and all your 1099s and W-2s are ready to go. It would be nice, though.

It is still early! They don't have to be sent out until January 31st. I don't even look for ours until a few days into February....

We are having trouble getting the books and forms to do taxes. They think everyone has a computer and printer and wants to print all this stuff out.

I ordered 1099D and 1099M from the IRS and they are backordered. I got all the W2s done before the middle of the month but the longer you wait the more employees call to say they moved and didn't tell you. If you give them out early then haven't finished the payroll taxes you might find an error.
January and Feb are the busiest months, and January is by far the worst. First it starts with Christmas and New Year's being 4 days off so you are already behind. The financial statements must be perfect so every account needs looked at and documented. I still haven't sent out the December financial statements but have worked long hours all month. So Feb starts off behind and I need all new directories and spreadsheets so have two years of everything opened and a short month.
This time of year makes me want to retire and dropping everything to send out 1099s is near the bottom of my list of things to do.

I got the 1099s out to the recipients last week and the one W-2 out.
I still need to get the official 1099s sent to the IRS and will file the W-2 online--as soon as my number to do that arrives. Decided to go that route as IRS is backordered on W-2s and it's a church with no money, so I will not pay $25 for 25 W-2s from Staples.

Could you not just copy the W2 forms on a Xerox, fill them out, and send them in that way?

The forms that go to Social Security for the W-2s have to be on the "red" copy or there is a penalty. There is approved software, but we can't justify the expense for one W-2. I have the red 1099s and will finish those tomorrow. Already sent out recipient copies of both.

Could you not buy one real tax form, and then copy them on a color copier? Red form problem solved?

Could you not buy one real tax form, and then copy them on a color copier? Red form problem solved? It turns out that the IRS is fussy about these things. Special form, special paper, special ink. They do let you use your own envelope to submit your 1096 along with the 1099s though. taxpro, out of curiosity, why must these forms be purchased? Individual forms are free... eta: "Individual" meaning Form 1040 etc and accompanying forms and schedules. Thank you for your input; I'd never wondered about this.

It's the W-2s and the 1099s that they insist are on the "red" copy. I finally got my authorization today to file online for the W-2s as the IRS was on back order. Now I'm set for next year. I have enough 1099s to file those with the IRS.
