How much do you spend on computer(s)?
How often do you replace your computer(s) and how do you know when it's time to upgrade?
I realize that's a lot of questions, basically I want to know about YM computers. Feel free to answer only some (or none) of the questions if you like.

At work: Desktop. Because I hate typing on a laptop. I also have a laptop to do work at home. I alos have a tablet to play with.
PC. Because our IT company deals with them.
Windows. Because that's what our IT contractor has.
Work is pretty much limited to work and research. AT home, web surfing. downloading movies, pictures, finance. Tablet is pretty much limited to websurfing and movies and games for kids.
Replace: When the home desktop stopped working. when the laptop died. when the work computer starts pissing me off because it's so slow.
Spend: I dunno.

I use a PC desktop. I always felt macs were overpriced for what you get and (like starbucks) you're paying for the brand and not the product. I also understand apple products and software typically only works with other mac products and software, though I hear that is changing.
I like desktops because I can get a big monitor and keyboard. I have some eye troubles and don't like squinting at small screens or using tiny keyboards. Using a desktop is just more comfortable to me because I don't have to feel hunched over and squinting at a screen. Plus using a real keyboard always seems more natural to me. I can see the appeal of laptops because they're mobile, but I very rarely need computers "on the go." If I traveled a lot I'd probably get a laptop, but most hotels these days have PC's where you can check your e-mail and surf the web, so I can live without my own computer for a week or two if I need to.
Tablets seemed kind of cumbersome to me, not really designed to do work but more for media.
I use my computer for gaming. So it's more expensive than most computers. I spent about 2k on it in 2010, and plan to keep it for at 7-8 years. Beyond gaming I use it for web browsing and basic office stuff like excel and word.
I prefer to select my own parts as an educated consumer and get a company to put it together, or just put it together myself. That way I know I have quality products vs. buying one pre made where they often skimp on the innards. I haven't had many problems with computers I put together myself, one time the bearing on the fan went out, but the computer was under warranty so I replaced it. Haven't had any major computer problems (knock on wood), though the dell I had in college was always breaking down.

Do you use a mac or PC and why? Switched from a PC to a Mac two years ago. Got tired of the "bugginess" of the PC, the expensive new versions that seemed to be necessary.
Which do you think is "better"? For me, Mac
Do you use a Desktop or Laptop (or tablet) and why? Both. I use the desktop when I need other papers etc. I use the ipad when I'm not near the desktop - for email, facebook, proboards, or simply browsing. The ipad is portable; the desktop isn't.
What operating system do you use and why? Mac OS X - it's what came on it.
What do you use your computer for other than posting here? what don't I use it for? Skyping relatives, managing my finances, tracking investments, looking up recipes, uploading photos (and sharing them), looking up stuff, preparing presentations (for an organization I belong to), planning trips, booking flights, hotels, genealogy research.....
How much do you spend on computer(s)? Spent about $1400 on my desktop two years ago, the ipad was a gift, spend about $20/mo for some online subscriptions, the occasional software maybe ~$50....
How often do you replace your computer(s) and how do you know when it's time to upgrade? As rarely as possible. Had my previous computer 7 years. I hate replacing my computer and will do as much to keep it updated as I can.

at work: HP PCs. Bleh - I HATE HP! at home: 1 PC built from a special website that builds computers from random yet new parts (I think iBuy or something like that) - I think the whole thing including monitor was around $1200, and it plays video games VERY well. 1 netbook - Toshiba. We bought it for just under $300 so that I wouldn't hog the precious gaming computer to check email and post on the boards. other than my iPod Touch, we don't do Mac products. They are too expensive and IMO aren't as awesome and glamorous as people think they are.

So, I was wondering, what type(s) of computer(s) do you use and why?
Do you use a mac or PC and why? Which do you think is "better"? I use a PC. I start using computers back in the mid 1980s, and my ex bought a PC. I never really thought about a Mac.
Do you use a Desktop or Laptop (or tablet) and why?We have both. The laptop sits in the closet. I got it so that I could do schoolwork over at ex-BF's parents house while we sat with his mom, who had Alzheimer.
What operating system do you use and why? There's a choice? Every computer I have ever bought came with some form of Microsoft. Except maybe that very first one, a Leading Edge, didn't. I know I used to have to do DOS commands back then. It was pre-Windows.
What do you use your computer for other than posting here?Because I am a teacher, it's an essential part of lesson preparation. I also buy stuff, do Facebook, do email, balance my checkbook, pay bills, and all that other stuff you do in life.
How much do you spend on computer(s)? Not a lot because I don't need the fastest or the best. I don't game, for example. I'd say my last one cost about $500 . . . computer only.
How often do you replace your computer(s) and how do you know when it's time to upgrade? I replace them when they die. I have never replaced a working computer just to upgrade. The Leading Edge one worked so well that it took ten years to die, and that was in a smoke-filled room. I totally missed the debut of Windows. This one is about two years old. I have good computers at work, and they are replaced about every four or five years.
I realize that's a lot of questions, basically I want to know about YM computers. Feel free to answer only some (or none) of the questions if you like.
Here's one that would be interesting. How much did you spend on your FIRST computer? Ex was actually a programmer so we got that Leading Edge upgraded as far as it could go. We even took out a loan at the credit union to pay the $3000. This was back in 1985. Now you see why we had to get our money's worth. Lol.

Do you use a mac or PC and why? Which do you think is "better"? PC because I need autocad compatability. I've never used a Mac except for the Apples in the junior high computer lab in the mid 90s.
Do you use a Desktop or Laptop (or tablet) and why? Desktop at work; laptop as a desktop at home (plugged in old moniter, keyboard, and mouse after the old computer died).
What operating system do you use and why? Windows. Because we need autocad compatibility at work and home
What do you use your computer for other than posting here? For work - drafting, designing, writing reports, calculations. For home - doing work stuff on occaison, personal finances, online shopping
How much do you spend on computer(s)? Our home computer was about $1100 in 2007. We wanted a laptop for portability if necesarry and it had to have enough juice to run autocad.
How often do you replace your computer(s) and how do you know when it's time to upgrade? At work, when we start losing productivity because autocad upgraded and the computers haven't yet. I had the oldest computer in the office and it was 5.5 years old when we upgraded last year. At home, just as long the computers will keep running and aren't too slow.

Work - Desktop that has been here as long as I have (5+ years) with to my knowledge only more ram added and software updates. We're running Windows XP I believe, definitely not windows 7.
Home - Desktop that I've had for over 6 years ($900; system I had built that could handle gaming) and I've had to replace one of the HD's and the video card in that time and I also added some ram a few years ago. I upgraded to windows 7 some time back and about the only thing I need to do is purchase another monitor because one of the two that I use that I've had for 7+ years died. Once I buy a place (currently looking) I may upgrade my desktop as I plan on having an office and would like to get a system that I can count on for the next 5+ years. I used to play games and would upgrade regularly but rarely play games these days and if I do I can use the PS3. Any system I build or buy the next time around will handle games for years to come if I do play them on PC. I do have a laptop that was a low end model when I bought it that is 5 years old that I rarely use. I also have an Ipad2 that I use for some things like going online, checking email, etc instead of starting up the desktop.

So, I was wondering, what type(s) of computer(s) do you use and why? We have 4 HP Desktops and 2 HP Laptops in our house. 3 of 4 the HP desktops are running server OS's. 1 HP desktop is a media PC for the TV.
Do you use a mac or PC and why? Which do you think is "better"?
PC all the way. I see no benefit to Macs, yet they can't run the software I need without booting to Windows or a Windows VM.. Bleh. Do you use a Desktop or Laptop (or tablet) and why? Laptop mostly. I have an Android table, but it is a toy.
What operating system do you use and why? Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7
What do you use your computer for other than posting here? Running servers such as mail and web servers. How much do you spend on computer(s)? $2000/year
How often do you replace your computer(s) and how do you know when it's time to upgrade? We have so many that the replacement is 1 a year on average.

Work = PC (Lenovo). It's OK. No idea how old it is, but it's been here since before I have (3 years). I also have a Dell laptop, it's pretty nice, but I've only had it a couple of months so it should be! OS is Vista on both. Home = We have a 5yo MacBook, a first-generation iPad, and a rarely-used desktop that DH built out of old car parts or something. Leopard OS on the MacBook (and maybe the iPad, I dunno) and XP on the desktop. Uploading/editing pictures, word processing, spreadsheets, internet surfing, watching TV shows. The MacBook was about $1300 in 2007... other than a hard drive replacement (covered by warranty) that's all we've spent on it. The iPad was about $700. DH scrounged the desktop parts himself. We usually only "upgrade" when something dies. As long as the MacBook keeps chugging along, I'll stick with it. Once it dies, we'll probably buy a MacBook Pro. I know opinions on Apple products vary widely, and maybe their reliability will take a hit now that they're under new leadership, but I've been EXTREMELY happy with my MacBook. Prior to that, I'd gone through a handful of Dell laptops that had lasted maybe 2 years apiece (one died right in the middle of a law school exam without saving - ouch!)

I don't remember how much our first one was, but our house was robbed in 1996 and it was stolen - we bought a $1200 Packard Bell with the insurance money.
I was so excited to be able to download MIDI files and save them to a floppy disk... ah those were the days.

So, I was wondering, what type(s) of computer(s) do you use and why?
At work, I have a desktop. I also have a desktop at home where I normally post from. Last year, I bought a laptop since it was easier to have my stats programs with me when I traveled out to TD's.
Do you use a mac or PC and why? Which do you think is "better"?
I've only used PCs, so don't know which one is better. I am curious though, but going to a Mac would likely make things more difficult for me at work since everything there is PC based.
Do you use a Desktop or Laptop (or tablet) and why?
I have all 3. If I need to work, I use my laptop. If I need to write a lengthy email, I use the laptop. If I'm just cruising online, I use my iPad. The iPad is easier to use while I'm in the hospital too.
What operating system do you use and why? This laptop came with Windows 7.
What do you use your computer for other than posting here? Writing, stats, data analysis.
How much do you spend on computer(s)? First computer I bought back in 1998, I spent $2800 for. Since then, this laptop was my most expensive computer and I spent a little under $1000 for it.
How often do you replace your computer(s) and how do you know when it's time to upgrade?
Varies. I can't see replacing any of my computers for the next few years. My laptop is a little over a year old. My desktop is about 4 years old. My tablet is about 6 months old.

So, I was wondering, what type(s) of computer(s) do you use and why? I use a Dell PC and a IBM laptop.
Do you use a mac or PC and why? Which do you think is "better"? I use a PC because I am pro-Microsoft and anti-mac. Also PC are cheaper to buy off eBay than macs
Do you use a Desktop or Laptop (or tablet) and why? At work I use a desktop and at home I use both a desktop and a laptop. I use a desktop because I can do more things with it than a laptop and they are cheaper to buy. I use a laptop because it is mobile and a desktop is not.
What operating system do you use and why? At work I use Windows XP and at home I use windows 7 Ultra. The reason I use Window 7 because it comes with Microsoft Media Center. At home, I connect my computer to my TV and I use window media center to play music and watch hulu, netflix, and movies on my TV.
What do you use your computer for other than posting here? At work I use my computer to develop website and write code. At home I use my computer to surf the web, buy crap from amazon, play music, record tv shows, and watch movies.
How much do you spend on computer(s)? I usually buy used computers off eBay for less than $200. I spent about $186 off ebay for my laptop
How often do you replace your computer(s) and how do you know when it's time to upgrade? I replace my PC when I want to upgrade the operating system and the cost of upgrading the memory cost close to the amount of buying a better PC on ebay.

Feel free to answer only some (or none) of the questions if you like. PC, at work and at home. I would like to make the switch, but it is more convenient to have everything on one platform. Desktop at work, Laptop and netbook at home. Both running Windows XP, and I think the netbook uses Vista. Why - because they were preinstalled. Other than the boards - Facebook, checking my 401K and bank accounts daily, shopping on Amazon, Zecco, email, and reading the paper - nydailynews, nytimes, nymag, and slate. I spent $280 maybe, on the netbook, which was purchased about two years ago. The laptop is a Dell as well, and I spent around $1,100 (?) at least five years ago. I am starting to think that it is time to upgrade, but honestly, I am tired of the whole process, which is why I have not. How full my hard drive is, is what usually sets the time. I have tried to be more judicious in what I download, but I also need to start using an external drive for large files like movies from itunes and whatnot. ETA: I used to be a huge Sims player, but when my netbook couldn't run the latest version I gave it up. The laptop takes way too long to startup now, so I only bring it out when I need the larger screen. ETA2: We ooVoo alot with my sister in Hawaii, my nieces love to call her at bedtime. And we currently have six laptops and three desktops in our house.

Well, my current computer is the first one I bought with my own money, but before that my parents bought my college computer. I think it cost around 1000-1100 dollars including the monitor, mouse, and keyboard. My dad is still using it as a second computer, though the monitor died a couple of years ago. Before that I just used my parents computer, I don't know how much they spent on it.
At work I use a laptop hooked up to a docking station, which is hooked up to a mouse and keyboard. The only reason I ever unplug it is if I travel or want to work from home.

At work I rock a variety of computers, but the one I post on here with is an old SunBlade workstation running Solaris 10 and Firefox.
At home I have an aging desktop, that was pretty decent when I got it, and is currently out of commission waiting for me to replace a video card. Running windows and Firefox. And a cheap ass little netbook, that my daughters use more than I do.
I occasionally play games on my home computers, but they're mostly used for general web surfing, dorking around, and whatnot. I tend to buy mid range computers and keep them for roughly 5 years. We run Windows because it's easy honestly. Compatible with everything, familiar, etc. I spend enough time at work futzing with Solaris servers, I don't need any pain in the ass operating systems at home.
The wife has an even older desktop than I do, and each daughter has a cheap little $300 desk top that I built with them.

What type(s) of computer(s) do you use and why?
I have an 8 year old Dell desktop, a 2 year old Dell netbook, and a 1 year old iPod Touch.
Do you use a mac or PC and why? Which do you think is "better"?
I like the wide variety of programs and hardware available in the PC market, so will continue to use a PC for my main computer.
My Palm PDA was dying, and I needed a new PDA, but not a smartphone. There aren't a lot of choices out there, so I ended up with in iPod Touch. I like all the apps available for the iTouch, but I abhor Apple's business model where nothing gets on my iTouch without them getting their cut of the action.
Do you use a Desktop or Laptop (or tablet) and why?
My desktop is my primary computer. I really like the 24" monitor I have attached to it. It's nice to have two apps, such as Firefox and Quicken, open next to each other. I love being able to see a nice portion of a large spreadsheet. If a storm is approaching I have have a weather radar window open while I have another window open for surfing.
The netbook is for surfing the internet while watching TV in the evening. The PDA is for light internet surfing, weather radar checking at 3am in the morning, doing crossword puzzles, playing music, etc.
What operating system do you use and why?
My Dells run Windows XP, the iTouch runs whatever Apple uses.
What do you use your computer for other than posting here?
Web surfing on any of the computers. Financial life on my desktop. If my computer can do it, I'll do it - photo editing, document scanning and management, ripping CDs, etc. About the only thing I don't do is gaming. Doesn't interest me. I may play a few things on my PDA, but I'd rather do crossword puzzles than play Angry Birds.
How much do you spend on computer(s)?
I don't remember what I spent on my Dell 8 years ago. I ended up spending more than $1,000 on my netbook because I got it loaded with anything I could. I'll spend whatever is necessary to get what I want. I'll spend for system memory, a good processor, and a good sized hard drive. I just won't go as far as a gaming PC. That's more than what I'll use.
How often do you replace your computer(s) and how do you know when it's time to upgrade?
Because I'll get a system fairly well loaded, it will last quite a while. But my 8 year old desktop really needs to be replaced. I want to keep using my 24" monitor, so it will either be a desktop or a laptop with a docking station. Definitely looking forward to getting USB 3.0 on whatever I buy.

I prefer to use Macs. I grew up with Apple/Mac (starting with the Apple II+ ) and they tend not to piss me off like Windows machines do. We have Windows at work, so I'm stuck with that. My college desktop and law school laptop were Windows machines because they were graduation gifts and I didn't want to ask for more expensive machines. The desktop (HP) was passable, the laptop (Gateway) was pretty awful. When I graduated and started my job, I bought a Macbook Pro as a gift to myself. Last summer, DH surprised me with a Macbook Air, which I will use until I feel like getting something else. I doubt I will ever go back to a desktop as my general use computer. I love being able to be on the computer in bed, on the couch, etc. Operating system is whatever came with it... Lion maybe? I don't pay that much attention. Computer is used for surfing the web, email, IM, work (Word, sometimes Excel), watching shows on Hulu or whatever... what else is there in life? I spend something like 90% of waking hours on the computer.

The first computer I ever used was a room sized with tubes. We programmed on cards, it didn't do much. Next was Unix 40mg hard drive for 5 users in 1983, no internet or games at all . I asked the boss for games and he said we could play depreciation schedule Then I went to 286 PC at work in 1986, still no games or internet. So I bought a 386 for $2K in 1990 and bought two games for it . Starting in 1990 I did software support on PC and Unix with Novell for the PCs. Then in 1994 I switched to VMS and DOS then we converted the DOS to GUI. I happen to prefer VMS or UNIX and have never even looked at a Mac so have no opinion.

So, I was wondering, what type(s) of computer(s) do you use and why? work = planar desktop home = acer laptop. I looked at the consumer reviews at Walmart.com and the Acer seemed sufficient for what I needed.Do you use a mac or PC and why? Which do you think is better? I've never used a mac.Do you use a Desktop or Laptop (or tablet) and why? desktop at work because that's what they provide. Laptop at work because I like being able to use it anywhere in the house - I especially love being able to take it out on the patio room. What do you use your computer for other than posting here? "simple" games - things like spider solitaire, word games, etc., some on-line shopping, general surfing, emailing (work and personal), doing taxes, word, excel and eBaying. Probably other stuff that I'm just not remembering at the momentHow much do you spend on computer(s)? don't remember - I do know my last one cost less than the one I bought before. How often do you replace your computer(s) and how do you know when it's time to upgrade? I started with a WEBTV mostly so I could buy stuff off of ebay and send emails to my cousins who were in college at the time. Then when ebay was no longer usable on WEBtv (or maybe when I decided to start selling on EBay - I know it had something to do with Ebay!) I bought a lap top. I had dialup and long telephone wires in several rooms. I bought my current lap top when the old one decided it would no longer connect to the internet. It's now in use as a portable DVD player.

Do you use a mac or PC and why? Which do you think is "better"?
I use a PC at both work and home. I bought a PC because it was much cheaper relative to what a mac would have cost. I don't think I really considered mac at all at the time, but I don't really have anything against them. Who knows....my next one could be a mac.
Do you use a Desktop or Laptop (or tablet) and why?
Work I have a Dell laptop with a docking station. At home I have a Toshiba laptop. I have no real desire to have a desktop anymore -- I don't like the idea of being tied down to a single location. With my laptop, I can use it while I sit on the couch watching tv, laying in bed, sitting out on my terrace, in the kitchen while I'm waiting for something to bake/boil/etc.... If I want, I can hook the laptop up to the tv via HDMI -- can't do that with a desktop unless I moved it to the living room (when I had a desktop, it was in my office). Even when I had a desktop (before it crapped out), I used my old laptop more because I didn't have to be in the office to use it.
What operating system do you use and why?
Windows 7. It came on the new laptop, but I owned a copy I would've installed anyway. I like it as an OS.
What do you use your computer for other than posting here?
General internet browsing/surfing/shopping. Doing work/writing documents. Watching tv (hulu and sometimes netflix if I don't want to get out of bed). Gchat. I spend a lot of time on the computer, even if I'm not doing much of anything.
How much do you spend on computer(s)?
IIRC, I spent about $600 on my current laptop, plus I bought an external hard drive for backup purposes at the same time. I'm not opposed to spending more per se, it depends on what my budget looks like at the time.
How often do you replace your computer(s) and how do you know when it's time to upgrade?
In college I had a desktop that I upgraded regularly, to the point where it was entirely rebuilt (a couple times over) from what it had started as. That just got upgraded as I wanted to upgrade it. I bought my first laptop for law school. It made it about 2 years and then it started dying on me, so I bought a new one. That one lasted me ~5 years (it was on life support for about 2-3 months at the end, but my desktop, which I had ceased upgrading once I went to law school died which necessitated heavier use of the laptop killing it completely). I bought the current laptop 2 years ago. While I'm on the 3rd power cord, the laptop itself is going strong. I assume that it will last me several more years, assuming I don't replacement just because.

Do you use a mac or PC and why? Which do you think is "better"? I am a PC girl. I don't do much desktop publishing or media work or anything of the things that Macs are really great for, and Iam uncomfortable when I can't right click.
Do you use a Desktop or Laptop (or tablet) and why? I have a Dell desktop at work and a Dell laptop at home. I don't really have room for a designated computer station at home, and I needed a laptop for school.
What operating system do you use and why? I am one of the 3 Americans running Vista. It came with the laptop and I couldn't be bothered to change it.
What do you use your computer for other than posting here? About 90% of what I do is email, Microsoft Office applications, watching hulu and playing Facebook, so I don't need a particularly powerful machine. It would be nice if the statistical analysis software ran a little faster, but I have not been willing to pay for that yet.
How much do you spend on computer(s)? Less than $500 if I can get away with it. I am a big fan of "last year's model"
How often do you replace your computer(s) and how do you know when it's time to upgrade? I got my first personal computer in 1996 (it was also "last year's model") and kept it until 2004 or 2005. You basically needed to turn a crank to get it to start. It groaned and sputtered and finally couldn't even load a simple webpage anymore, so I got rid of it. Went without a home computer until 2009 when I got my laptop. Unless it has some sort of major crash, I'm figuring I'm set for the next 3-4 years.

So, I was wondering, what type(s) of computer(s) do you use and why?
Do you use a mac or PC and why? Which do you think is "better"? I have a PC. I've never had a mac, so I can't make the comparison.
Do you use a Desktop or Laptop (or tablet) and why? I have a laptop. It is wireless and I can use it anywhere in the house or on the patio.
What operating system do you use and why? Windows 7 because that's what it came with.
What do you use your computer for other than posting here? Email and checking out blogs about couponing and finances, web surfing when I want to research something, writing/storing documents, Netflix, etc.
How much do you spend on computer(s)? As little as possible while still getting the features that I want and for some reason, I'm partial to Toshibas. I can't remember what I paid for my current laptop. It was on sale because the model that I bought was being discontinued by Toshiba in favor of something "better". PERFECT!!
How often do you replace your computer(s) and how do you know when it's time to upgrade? I don't replace them until they die and cannot be fixed for a reasonable price compared to a new one. My DBIL is an IT guy; he gives our computers a "tune-up" when he comes to visit, so hopefully the ones that we are using now will last a long time. This computer had an "issue" so I just used DH's for a while knowing that DBIL was coming out in a few weeks. After DBIL's visit, it was as good a new. ;D

I use a PC. I've only ever owned a PC. I did have one job where Macs were used. Boss told me they never, ever crashed. He was wrong.
Do you use a Desktop or Laptop (or tablet) and why?
I own a desktop (which I rarely use) a laptop and an iPad. I consider the laptop my primary computer. Computers are both Dells.
What operating system do you use and why?
XP on the desktop and Windows 7 on the laptop because they were installed on the computers when I purchased them.
What do you use your computer for other than posting here?
Email, Facebook, Twitter, other forums, spreadsheets, checking financial affairs, online bill pay, shop, iTunes, download music, etc. etc.
How much do you spend on computer(s)?
Laptop was around $400 on sale at Sam's Club. Also have an external hard drive as back up.
How often do you replace your computer(s) and how do you know when it's time to upgrade?
When either the hard drive dies or it gets so slow and outdated that it won't run any more.
I've owned computers since the days of Dos when my system cost $4000 and did nothing but word processing. Pretty expensive typewriter.

I was kind of hoping for an epic Mac Vs. PC debate, but everyone is getting along . Can someone throw a chair or something .

It's interesting that for as much time as we all seem to spend online, we aren't too big on high end computers.

Ask the same question on a gaming forum and you'd get a giant list of really high end rigs. *laughs* DF loves to game, and even building them himself they run up into $1500 or so, with the case already bought. I equate them to Racing Tractors. Ungodly power, designed for speed. I just work on any sort of second hand circuitry and run it until you can't buy replacement parts anymore, which I guess is the computer equivalent of a goat pulling a cart

I equate them to Racing Tractors. Ungodly power, designed for speed. More like a Lamborghini, since they should be sexy as hell if you build them right. Power, speed, sexy, temperamental, and expensive to repair.
