One of the reasons I like getting here at 7:30 is that I have at least 30 minutes until everyone else shows up. So of course the colleague that drives me INSANE came in 5 minutes after I did - and she's already yakking her head off!!!!!

Can you get an mp3 player and ear buds?
That's how I finally handled my yakky co-worker. Just blocked her out with music.
Of course it annoyed her, she kept telling me she was used to being able to call across the room to me when she wanted to tell me something and hated that she had to come over and stand next to my desk to get my attention now. I was missing all her clever comments.
She didn't 'get' that the reason I started listening to music was to block her constant babbling. In her mind, everyone was fascinated by every word that sprang from her lips. She referred to herself as a cheerful song bird that brightened every room when she walked in. Seriously.
More like a flock of shrieking crows....

You should spend those 30 minutes with your son. A good mom would. ;D

I like getting in the office early for the very same reason. I get in around 7:30 and no one else shows up until almost 9 AM. It is great!

I'm another one who likes the few extra silent minutes before the yakking attacks begin. I think I get more done in 15-20 minutes of quiet than I do in an hour with others around when they complain to the boss, make personal calls, or just jabber out loud.

Hahahha yeah, if you want peace and quiet around here, stay later. By 4:45pm a lot of the early risers are long gone.

In my office, the employee I dislike the most starts at 6:00 a.m. I can't get away from her. However, working at home for two days a week with her working from home on a day that I'm in the office means that I have to be around her for only two days a week. Which is plenty ! Blech. Today she came over and hugged me and called me "sweetie." hugged you? she'd have been on the floor if that were me. you are a strong person to have held it in. damn!

I agree with happy, just use your mp3 player. Of course, almost everyone in my office uses an mp3 player, but music really helps the editorial process.

I like getting in the office early for the very same reason. I get in around 7:30 and no one else shows up until almost 9 AM. It is great! Before I had DD, I would get in the office between 7:30 to 8:30 while everyone else gravitated in between 9 to 10 depending on the person. Our office hours are 9 to 5; however, appointments aren't scheduled until 10am at the earliest. Since having DD, people get there closer to 9 as my schedule changed due to DD's daycare so I show up between 9 to 9:30 and 2 of them show up by 9 instead. Also, they don't expect me to be there 1st anymore. FWIW, I work a small public accounting firm.

Most people here would roll over and die if they had to be at work by 6:30 am. They typically trickle in somewhere between 8:45 - 10:00. We have a flexible office.

I use to come to the office at 7 ... so I can do nothing for 2 hours until everyone shows up and live early and still get paid the same... So please do not give me this 'peace and quiet' exuse. You know why you come to work early. You have coffee. You check Internet (moneyjenny does it for sure!). You call someone of your friends who is also alredy in the office or jobless and can yak with you at 8am...so be honest at least with yourselves!
