Happy un-retirement to me! Some of you may remember a thread I started at the beginning of this month about my being unexpectedly laid off from my job & suddenly staring at unplanned early retirement with a SERIOUSLY reduced state pension after over 25 years of service. Well, I found out 2 weeks ago that there was exactly 1 vacancy in the entire system for my skill set & I just got the official job offer this morning! It means moving 3 hrs. farther away from my grandsons (DGS #2 arrived 6 days after I lost my job, BTW) but it means I now have a real chance to finish out my career in the same retirement system and can more than double my pension if I can stay there 4 1/2 more years!!

Yay! Except for being farther from the grandkids, that part sucks.

Good luck to you for the new position! When will you find out?
Can you rent out your house if you get the job?
ETA: Also, K for you for being so driven and flexible! I'm thinking most people would prefer to "ride it out" and just take early retirement, but you're willing to relocate!
Is there any chance that a similar position could open up closer to you? I hope so!

I actually interviewed for this position about 10 days ago; other than geography, it is a really good fit for my skills & experience (pharmacist with many years of exp. in psych. care). There are only 5 sites in the whole state system scattered all over the state of GA and this was the only vacancy in the whole system. I will have to be there July 2nd to start their orientation. DH is also trying to get a job at the same facility (different type of job, he's an activity therapist) and should be able to start later in the summer. And Beth, yep, the moving farther from my grandsons does suck. Big time. ETA: Debt, there aren't any facilities that are really much closer..we currently live in the middle of the state and the other 4 sites are basically around the outer edges of the state ( and Georgia is a BIG state!) We do actually already have a prospective renter for this house, however.

"ETA: Also, K for you for being so driven and flexible! I'm thinking most people would prefer to "ride it out" and just take early retirement, but you're willing to relocate!" I am amazed at people who seem to be completely inflexible and then complain that they can't find a job. My dad worked for the same company for 29 yrs and they closed when he was in his 50's (about 15 yrs ago). He ended up being offered a job transfer 1500 miles away. When he talked to my mom she just said we have to do what we have to do. They didn't particularly want to move because I was 2 hrs away and my brother who also has a daughter was less than 1 hr away but they did. I have always been impressed by their ability to adapt to that situation.

Glad that there is hope. As far as those Grandbabies, you will find time for that too and think how much time you will have if you retire at full pension and no worries

Very cool! The good news is, by the time those grandbabies are old enough to visit, say, Disneyworld with you, you'll be able to afford to go!

I live 20-45 minutes from my six grandchildren (two sets that represent the range), and I hardly ever see them. I do see the 20 minutes ones more often, particularly in summer when I'm off and offer to relieve their SAHM. The 45-minute ones are strictly holidays and birthdays. I get calls that frequently. And I was actually a great parent; my kids will tell you that. But they and their kids are incredibly busy with work and activities.
I obviously am doing something worng, but so be it. I am actually thinking of moving to Florida with DH after I retire, figuring I will see everyone at least as frequently and it will give them a more interesting destination.
So in my case, I would never plan work around grandkids. But you obviously see yours more.

I hope DF feels the same way. For some reason, even though his step kids and bio kid treat him like crap, he wants a place here to be near them. I figure he will figure it out sooner than later and be on board with us returning to Florida.

4-1/2 years will go by quickly. You can do it standing on your head! And it will be so worth it for your retirement. Best of luck to you!

Thanks, everyone! I really am kinda excited at the new opportunity, even with the hassles of moving. Gonna be complicated since DH's mom lives with us and she's going to have to adjust to yet another total change in her environment ( she's almost 90 and overall in really good shape for her age but starting to lose ground mentally and physically in the last year or so).
DH has been totally supportive of this move from day one, for which I am really grateful. Most of my family lives in the area that we are in now & they don't want to see us go, but are totally understanding of the necessity of this move. DS1, DDIL, and my grandsons are almost 3 hrs away from here, so I already don't get to see them very often. This move will take me another 2 1/2 hrs farther away....boo, hiss...but this is something I really have to do for our long-term financial wellbeing.
As for being flexible, well, since I already had to totally start over 10 yrs. ago after a mid-life divorce--this should be a walk in the park compared to that!
Oh yeah, I haven't mentioned it yet, but this move is to the GA coast and a lot of my friends are rather envious.....I am married to a mountain-loving man, but I can definitely think of worse places to be than a beautiful, historic city by the sea....!

;)Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! Hockeygrl, you guessed right! I didn't say Savannah because I wanted to see how long it would take someone to guess it! Yes, Savannah is a beautiful place and I am looking forward to exploring it more in the next few years.

Well, I have spent a lot of time down by St. Simons island, so I immediately thought of Savannah. You will love it! Make sure you explore the whole coastline, too. There are still some beautiful places along there that haven't been destroyed by jerky tourists.

Three hours isn't very far really. If you can arrange to stretch 3 day weekends to 5 day taking day before and after off you can drive without holiday traffic after work and be there by 9PM Thursday night and come home Tuesday Afternoon letting you spend three full days with family 4-5 times a year plus vacations. They can come see you too or ship the kids for a week at a time if they get tired of them. Mom and dad used to have Grandkids flown in for spring break or get them a week or two in the summers and take 4 kids on vacations. The kids are 39-42 now and remember it fondly.
My grandma was 4 hours away and my nephew and I would do single day road trips to see her. Taking off around 6AM and having breakfast on the way we could be there at 10:30 visit until about 6 and tell her we needed to get home and be home by bedtime. It was nice spending the day with my nephew on a road trip and 7.5 hours is a nice visit with grandma. We would take her a bucket of fried chicken and show up not hungry so she didn't have to do anything for us at all but visit. She loved KFC and they didn't have one so we stopped 60 miles away and got her some.

UPDATE: DH just got his formal job offer at the same facility where I will be starting my new position!! I start on July 2 and he starts on August 1, so for one month we will be living 3 hrs apart during the week but it's only for one month. I am so relieved that he got this as he was starting to get anxious that it might not work out as planned... And GG, yes, I will be able to Skype the grandsons but since one is 18 months old and one is only 2 weeks old, that will be kinda one way for awhile.....but at least I will be able to see them that way & watch them grow into little boys without being totally out of the picture. Now, all we have to do is find somewhere to live, live thru the actual move, and find renters for our current home here. Simple, right??

That's awesome news! Congratulations to both of you. I'm sure that you will love living in a new area, and things will work out for the best in the end. My parents live a long distance from me, and I make sure that I take a couple of pictures of DS each week with my phone and text them to my mom. We recently went out and visited and she said how much she loved getting the pictures because she felt like she didn't have to miss out on how DS changed throughout the year. Ask your DS/DD to do the same so you can keep up with the little ones.

Congrats! I also would recommend ooVoo for video chat. We use it to chat with my sister in Hawaii, and my grandmother in Florida. You can do 6-way video calls.
