I'm a recent graduate, although not a young one. When I graduated I thought I would be looking for a job for months, maybe a year. I was mentally prepared for that. I was also determined to keep my old job as a cashier for as long as I needed it, doing the best performance I could, because they were paying me to do it. As things turned out, I posted a thread here asking for advice about interviewing and going through the job hunting process as a recent graduate with some issues (age, weight, insecurities). I already got a job. I start next Monday. You may think I am in the right place with the right degree. I'm sure that's part of it. But my new employer told me during the interview how much he admired me for going to school at night full time while working a full time job during the day. So my point is; yes, you may graduate and keep your same service job for a while, it may be difficult to find something. But there's also a matter of being determined to succeed. Of course, I'm talking about graduating in the U.S., I cannot imagine how hard it would be in a third world country with high poverty levels and high unemployment rates.

One of the owners of our company just had his son finish college. The family is pretty wealthy but the children aren't spoiled and are expected to work. Son could have come worked for us, on the job training like he did a couple of summers but he wanted to go to college. His dad said the son had a pretty cushy life and was happy go lucky mostly but was starting to worry before graduation. Now I hear him asking people if they have any work for his son. His degree is in environmental science. I have a hunch is dad will put him to work for us this summer if he doesn't land a job.
