The original question is kind of vague, I assume you're asking how to we conform to gener sterotypes, or are you asking how we buck them?
Well, I am in a very male dominated field (science), so I conform in that sense.
I buck the tend in other ways, I'm not into things a lot of guys are, including cars, sports, hunting or boating. I'm also terrible at working with my hands or with tools.

"My 6yo DD loves Star Wars with a passion and currently wants to grow up to be Darth Maul. That said, she told me the other day that girls aren't supposed to like Star Wars so she doesn't talk about it with the girls at school - only the boys. I don't know where she picked that up but it made me sad."
LOL, I went through a phase when I was a kid where I read all the babysitter club books. My parents didn't seem to mind.

I was a boy as a child didn't switch until I was adult. My dad and brothers and I did all boy stuff. I liked all the same things they did like fishing, hunting, camping and building things. None of us was into sports except front yard baseball. Mom was not interesting or fun at all, I think she was depressed, she cleaned and tried to control us uncontrollable children. She would do things like making sweet roll dough then dad would make cinnamon rolls when the dough was ready to us. Dad was a cook, mom could boil water or cook a burger. Dad taught us to do things like washing dishes, using power tools and hunting, mom seemed always to be ironing or something. I never saw the point of girl playing like with dolls or house, I tried it a time or two but was bored so I was one of the guys.
I was about 22 when I started college and actually talked to women and found them interesting not just stupid girls. Now I enjoy talking to women but still don't wear makeup or care about shoes and clothes.

There are averages and there are standard deviations. I was a fish out of water for years. I couldn't flirt. I wasn't popular. I read a lot of books and taught myself calculus from my Dad's college text. I took Physics in HS alongside guys who were dating the airheads who knew how to flirt better than I did. In college I shared dorms with girls who were there because their parents thought they should be there, who kept changing majors because they weren't really interested in anything other than finding a husband.
I finallly started finding women like me when I started working. It was wonderful. The author of "Women Who Run with the Wolves" talked about finding your tribe, and I'd found mine. Last week I interviewed at a place with a ton of smart women- some close to my age, others just out of college. They're computer geeks like me, and love compound interest and new data. I really hope they make me an offer.
But I digress. Quince expressed my thoughts exactly.
I do have to say, though, that I was kind of relieved when I had a child that it was a boy. I remember how hard it was to navigate through middle school and HS because I wasn't part of the crowd of popular girls. Some of them could be really mean. I woulld not have known how to help a daughter through that.

Actually, DF who has a daughter who played basketball, says the same thing. The girls play a better and more enjoyable game to watch, at least to him.

I'm always surprised when DS picks out something pink. It's one of his favorite colors. I wish I could get a pink tractor shirt somewhere. I'm surprised at how much interest he takes in his clothing.

I taught elem PE and the girls were always the better athletes much to the boys dismay. I told them around the end of middle school things would even out and some of them would get better because of height, weight, and strength, and some of them would not. But until then, suck it up you wimps! Nah, I didn't say that!

I know they had some when I went to a concert that had Jason Aldean... If you can find a white shirt with a tractor you could die it--or might see if you can find a tractor patch and put it on a pink shirt (or you could do a transfer, my mom did a lot of that when we were kids). I remember one of my best guy friends loving pink as a kid.

I loved linguistics to I'll throw a few things at you. Why do majors lead the army and majorettes decorate the band? Why do governors rule the state, and governesses lead the nursery. You get the idea. Help your kids by not reinforcing gender roles. I live within them every day because I am a generation above most of you. I don't find them limiting or particularly confining, but I am definitely aware of them. I supported Hillary Clinton (even with a campaign contribution) in the last election. I told my daughter that I supported Hillary because I wanted her to feel like she could be anything she wanted to be. However, my daughter is a STAUNCH Republican (to the point that political contributions are a line item in their budget because her husband is so politically active.) When McClain added Sarah Palin, she called me up and said, "See, Mom, another good role model." I cried. But only because I could see Russia from Alaska.

Today was a pretty good example of stereotypical gender roles. DH spent the entire morning lugging heavy rocks and shoveling gravel for our new patio. His older sister and I entertained the nephews, fetched drinks, and went to pick up lunch. To be fair, his younger sister did haul just as many huge, heavy rocks as DH. Around lunchtime she said, "WHY did I have to be born with such awesome muscles?"

My boss at the time expected me to switch sides because Palin played basketball and I was like what does that have to do with being vice president?

I think in some ways men and women are wired differently, generally speaking. It's possible that I use that as a justification for stereotyping, I haven't thought about it much.
In my personal life, I do have some notions about what men *should* do and what women *should* do.
But if someone excels at or is happy doing something outside traditional roles for their gender, more power to them. I respect people's right to be who they are, do what they want, and be happy.
