Odd movie, I wouldn't recommend it, but it was a fascinating artistic depiction of depression. Total downer. At the end their lives ended the way a suicidal person probably fantasizes it will.

I was going to start a thread about this movie. Glad I scrolled down.
I watched it last week. I usually avoid Lars von Trier. He's a masochist and a misogynist. However, this movie intrigued me.
It's totally depressing and disturbing, as I expected. But I was disappointed that I couldn't really connect with any of the characters. There was only one moment where Claire, in a moment of panic, grabs her young son and tries to drive off. Who knows where she was going to go. The whole planet was about to be wiped out. But I could identify with the panicked feeling a mother must have making a desperate attempt to do something, anything.

I have lived through a suicide in my family. So, sometimes movies come to close to reality.

It's not really a movie about suicide. The whole planet is going to be destroyed. No one can do a thing to stop it. They just have to watch and wait. Still horribly depressing.

Isn't Melancholia the name of the planet that's headed toward earth and about to destroy it? The movie itself isn't about melancholy.

I saw this on my TV guide tonight. Don't know if i will get to watch it. But, it sounds more like an end of the world scenario and how people react. Could be interesting.

Yes. Yes it is. I think the name of the planet is symbolic of the people in the movie. And, in particular, the character of Justine. If she isn't melancholy, I don't know who would be.
Shooby, It was interesting. It's not the kind of movie where I was upset I wasted my time watching it. It's not exciting. It's more of a character study. I was just disappointed that I couldn't find any characters I really connected to. I enjoy a character study movie more if I can identify with at least one of the characters. That just didn't happen for me in this movie.
