A twist on how old were you when you learned about sex.
My wife and I still use condoms because she had issues with the different birth control we have tried in the past (weight gains, headaches, spotting, etc)
I usually order them online in bulk but sometimes run out; so I would stop at a store to purchase some. Since I've moved to my area this past June I've gone to two well known stores and they told me they did not sell condoms nor pregnancy tests.
Why? Theft... their shrink on such products is out of control so they rather not carry it. We are not talking about some mom and pops, but Shop Rite, Price Chopper, Hannaford, etc.
I understand where they are coming from: if most of the condoms and birth control are being stolen... it makes financial sense to stop carrying it. But then is it responsible? What is their moral responsibility? Or they don't owe anyone anything and the bottom line ($$$$) is all that matters.

There is no moral responsibility for a grocery store to carry condoms or pregnancy tests.

At least they're not telling you it's because they have moral objections to made-up science, like pharmacists who won't dispense the Pill.

There is no moral responsibility for a grocery store to carry condoms or pregnancy tests. Pregnancy tests I get... but condoms? I lost track of the amount of time during my teen/college years that I've put myself at risk (and my partners) because I could not get a condom or did not have one on me. With STD's, HIV etc... shouldn't they take steps to at least have it available to those that want to buy it. Maybe just like having cigarettes at the service desk or locked up, they should do the same for condoms this way the people that need it and willing to pay for it have access to it.

Too early for a vasectomy? Thinking about it after kid #2 or #3 (I want 2, my wife wants 3) Guess we will know for sure after #2

It's not their responsibility. If you were too irresponsible (particularly during your college years) to have unprotected sex, the grocery store shouldn't have to hold your hand. And if you can't make the effort to try to go to a second store (like a gas station) to get the condom, then maybe you shouldn't be having sex.

...they're right there in the Health & Beauty section of wallyworld... and nobody notices anything in wallyworld except the crazy wardrobe choices of other shoppers... so feel free to buy them by the caseload... no one will notice...

Has your wife considered an IUD? I have a copper IUD and it's the best birth control ever. Good for 10 years and it's at least as effective as tubal ligation at preventing pregnancy (don't ask me how that's possible, but that's the information I was given). It's also easily removed when/if you want a kid later.
Best $660 I ever spent.

I second the IUD suggestion. I've had the copper Paragard one for 4+ years now and have never had a problem. Depending on your health insurance, it may only cost you the price of a copay (got mine for $25 in 2006!)

If they felt a moral responsibility, a sign stating that the items are available but have been placed behind the counter due to theft issues would probably do the trick. However, doing so might reduce sales to the point that they weren't profitable to carry.
Can you imagine how much of the excess cost of buying condoms in a store is due to theft?
I remember running into "We don't carry them" in a small city in the early 1990s. It was delivered with a snub. No reason was given. No alternate seller or source was proposed. Maybe you getting some sort of reason is a step in the right direction.

Cool! Now I'll be able to understand the mistake that I'm almost certain to make, sometime, eventually.

Walgreens here has condoms in a plastic case under lock and key. You have to find a store clerk to come unlock the case for you. Makes things interesting.

Ok... i was sleepy last night... but why is caillou looking for the availability of pregnancy tests? Well, according to his original post, if he doesn't have a condom, he stilll goes ahead and has unprotected sex.

Hubs and I decided to have #2, so I had it removed and we were pregnant by the next month. Had a second Paragard put in place a month after #2 was born, and we're loving it all over again. I had so many problems with hormonal birth control (weight gain, mood swings) and we absolutely hate condoms. This IUD is a godsend. And my gyno says the length of time its good for has been upped to 12 years, not 10. We spent about $500 for it but Paragard offers a no interest monthly payment plan we took advantage of - $41/month for a year. I highly recommend the Paragard.

I don't think cawaiu and his wife have had any kids yet, so an IUD probably isn't an option? (unless I'm mistaken, I thought they weren't recommended for women who hadn't had a child)

There is a world between condoms and hormonal birth control. Has she tried being fitted for a diaphram?
She should really talk to her gynocologist/doctor because there are a host of other birth controls that do not involve hormones or are extremely low dosage that might work for her.

On the IUD- Had one about 10 years ago and had it removed because I did not like the results/side effects.
I now use Depo Provera shots. Get one about every 3 months. Best Solution to the issue I have ever experienced.
I have a 17 year old son. I don't like what I am hearing about condoms. But, I will have a talk with him. It's kind of like when I was a teenager and they started advertising personal care products in prime time. If they can advertise it, I have to change my attitude and believe it is OK to discuss this stuff in public. If you are trying to buy condoms at the drug store - get over your embarrassment and just tell them what you need.
Luckily for us we have two Walgreens Drug Stores in close proximity to the house. They may lock up the condoms, but I don't think they will quit selling them.
Had no idea you could mail order condoms but it makes sense.

I told my kids if you are old enough to think about/have sex then you have to accept the responsibility that goes along with sex and that includes birth control. If you're too embarrassed to get birth control then you aren't mature enough to have sex.
